Over the course of 10 years, I made the switch from Canon to Fuji, to finally end-up on Leica. I found that as I got older, carrying a smaller & more powerful system was the way to go. It wasn't easy or inexpensive, but I can say that there's a definite feeling of satisfaction in picking up a camera that is this engaging, and well-built.

I'm not a professional photographer, so dropping the money on a Leica is virtually impossible for me to justify. However, if I were flush with cash, or if my career required I invest in my photography gear, I'd almost definitely own one. On a somewhat separate note: It is refreshing to hear somebody with real expertise talk about these cameras. This platform has become so inundated with amateurs that seem to possess neither the skill nor the vocabulary to duly illuminate the merits or deficiencies of the gear they pitch. In the lapse of editorial process, KZfaq is widely a vacuous landscape. You, however, are charismatic, experienced, discerning, and clearly educated. I can tell you hold yourself to a high standard, and I appreciate and trust your channel for that reason.

I found over the years that switching to different camera makers is a very expensive proposition. I’ve owned Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax, & Fuji now. Bottom line is I can’t afford to jump especially to something like Leica, which the body alone would cost more than my whole system! Sure there are things about Fuji that upset me, especially in the auto focus system, but overall I can’t justify going to a Leica. I guess if money is no object, then good for you. Then you have to buy all those lenses which would put me way out of reach of the system. I can buy an XT4 and 4 or 5 lenses and still have money in my pocket. Plus for what I do, street photography mostly, I don’t need that kind of resolution. Even when I do landscapes, I don’t feel like I need that resolution either. To me it’s not about pixel peeping, as much as it is about me the photographer and what I’m photographing. I see way too many people trying out so many different brands of lenses and camera bodies, that their images suffer because of it. My pictures have never been better and I only carry about two or three lenses with my XT4. But everybody has to decide for themselves and live with the trade offs. 🖖

Leica is like Rolex....great marketing and owners create a bubble where inside you are brilliant. They are nice cameras for sure. But they don't make your pictures better - the photographer does that. Would I say no to one, no. Do I want one...no. Fuji is like grand seiko.....to me.

After many years (decades) shooting Leica M I did exactly the opposite move “switching” (still own both) to Fujifilm. Have a XT4 and a GFX100S. The GFX does everything a Leica M does, better. However, I agree with your 3 reasons! But, of those 3, to me, the history / brand / culture / community is the strongest Leica advantage - no other camera company comes even close. For that single reason, when shooting Fujifilm I still feel Leica calling me.

Thanks for the helpful (and honest) videos you produce. I'm still new to photography, but this information helps define my goals. I bought a Fujifilm since it was a good small form factor to carry around for street photography. Depending how I go in the future I may have a look down the Leica path. The cost is eyewatering, but it becomes justifiable when you become a professional. Also: ditch all type of chairs and sit on an exercise ball. It may not be comfortable, but it'll definitely help with posture and core muscles.

A little thing. I shot for years with an M3, often with a 90 mm Summicron, often in a low light situation (theatre etc.) that demanded large apertures - hence shallow depth of field. I found my rangefinder to be pretty accurate, but it pushed me to compose my shots with the key item of interest dead centre. (Sure, you can focus and recompose, but when I was trying to track a moving subject, I tended to grab the shot a the instant things came together.) One thing that really thrilled me about my Fuji X Pro 2 was the ease with which I could slide my focus spot around the frame to where it made the most sense for the composition I’m after. This has freed me from the “centre-weighted” compositions of my film days.

Regardless of the camera you are using, I find your videos educationally informative and help me think through the creative process. It seems to me the creative process works with any camera system. For a number of reasons I switched from the Nikon D850 to the Fujifilm XT4 with a multitude of lenses; if Fujifilm comes out with a 45MP upgrade I'll probably add that to the kit and work to produce the best I can with the equipment I own. Any other changes would lead to a divorce that would far exceed the cost of any GAS changes.

The cameras you own are pretty much the ones on my list. I own an XT-2 and an X-H1 but look to upgrade in the not too distant future to either Leica or GFX. The manual focus though is a no go for me. As I get older my eyesight gets worse and worse and the Fuji's viewfinder is the best one I have found so far for my issues. Being able to rely on AF is also a big plus for me. Looks like a GFX is in my future.....

I recently switched my commercial kit from Canon to an M11 P and love it. I agree about the brand priorities being important, and would recommend looking at OM System as a photographer’s brand as well. I shot with them for years and their dedication in supporting the photographic community was amazing. I think these smaller brands like Leica and OM, though very different from each other, have the benefit of focusing more heavily on their dedicated users and the craft they promote.

Love your work brother. Started following you when I made the switch to fuji xpro3 few years ago (From a Nikon D3s). I agree that cameras and lenses are just tools and if Leica works for you then go for it. The xpro3 inspired me to go out and shoot again and those film simulations made me spend less time in front a pc and more out there shooting. Then trying manual lenses on the xpro3 made me revisit how and what I wanted to shoot and Leica fit the bill. Specifically the M10 monochrome. I realised I shifted to more b&w(Acros is ❤️) and the M10 monochrome is just lovely when I tried it out and played with the RAW files. It wont replace my xpro3 (I'll probably leave it for family snaps when colour is needed). Keep up the good work brother and hope to see more content from you. What are the odds when I go looking for a Leica, you made the jump to an M11 😂.

My late father left me a Leica iiif from 1949. It still works and is a fantastic camera, but slow in operation. I shoot digital mostly, and if money is no concern, of course I’ll go with an M11 with all the best primes from Leica. But as just a hobbyist, I cannot justify it. I bought a Leica summicron v4 in remembrance of my father and shot it with my Sony A7Rii, and it has a good enough Leica-look. I also own a bunch of Zeiss and Voigtlander primes, and they are fantastic on my voigtlander R2 camera. For weddings, I love the newer Sonys and Nikons, they’re fast, and at these day and age, post processing can get you whatever look you like.

Amateur dad photog here. Love your work, Gajan. I love your takes and how they are not colored by bias. Being South Asian, I also greatly appreciate you shining a light on your culture through your art. Your ongoing discovery and clear explanation of Leica's commitment, quality and pedigree speaks to me. I have shot with canon and Nikon, but only after receiving a fuji as a gift from my wife in 2017 did it become obvious that I was taking many, many more pictures of the things I care about (my family / documenting daily life) than when I was with the other systems (even while carrying a smartphone in my pocket). Fuji made me fall in love with photography. And part of that love came from the aesthetic and pathos I got from the fujifilm system. Coupled with their compact (always have a camera on me) size, quality for price and their commitment to their users...I feel like I've found my forever system. But honestly, Leica is always a whisper in my ear. I immediately watch reviews like this or read the latest about what Leica is doing. It's a constant draw. I'm not under the illusion that it will make me a better photographer...rather, I feel like it will take my personal (small "a") art and enhance the feeling of taking pictures (the creation of my art). My wallet will resist...for now! Keep up the good work.

I shoot both Fujifilm and Leica. The experience of shooting Leica is unique and I really enjoy it. You are right in saying that with Leica, less is more. Not much can go wrong unless it is human error. However, it is also very handy to have a X100V with me at all times due to its form factor. I also have a Xpro 3 that I don't use much, just having it in case I want to go for a hike and shoot some landscape. I feel more comfortable banging it around on a hike than banging around with a Leica.

One of the biggest failures of modern camera technology is “focus by wire”. It’s non linear, inaccurate, and lacks tactile response. Camera makers take note. Welcome to Leica Gajan, just be prepared for Leica’s lack of pro support and slow service. If your M11 should go down, kiss it goodbye for months. My only gripe being a Leica shooter. Leica M cameras will slow you down and reconnect you back to your craft. It inspires creativity because it involves you more in your image making.

Hi Gajan. I really enjoyed this episode, well I always do. It strikes me that the most important piece of advice you give is around 'what is your use case scenario'. My view is that the camera and system are the second thing to consider. The first is 'what are the lens options available'. I recently fell into the Sony system because I wanted a big sensor (and my local dealer had a low mileage A7R IV) to be able to crop wildlife images and still print big. (WL is less than 20% of my photography but has presented the biggest post production challenges). And I'm glad I did, because the range of third party glass has saved me a ton of money. I have two Sony and two Sigma lenses and they are terrific. Would I like to try a Leica. Oh yes. Would I buy one, probably not. The GFX system, whilst brilliant just isn't suited to enough of what I shoot to justify commitment. I miss Fuji and a sneaky purchase of an X100V or X-E4 is on the cards soon as a throw in a bag or pocket camera. Anyway those are my thoughts. As a footnote, Canon. Do they have a sideline trading in human organs for transplant? I ask because the price of their R series lenses is extortionate. Nobody has enough kidneys to buy their top end glass.

I’m using an H6D for professional work, but use mostly Leica for personal work. Next to an M10-R and M7 also a Q2 Monochrome which is a fantastic camera. Whenever in Wetzlar the people there treat you almost like family. It’s not only about the end result. It’s the creative process and experience that makes Leica stand out for me. I completely recognize what you’re saying. I wish you lots of fun. To those who look up to the costs of purchasing a Leica, see it as an investment. In the 10 years with Fuji, I’ve ‘burned’ more money on depreciation than with Leica. My M7 is now worth more than what I paid and the depreciation of the M10 was less than the write-off on my X-Pro2. Leica also ‘cures’ you from GAS, which is another way of saving money ;-)
@REMY.C.
@REMY.C. 2 жыл бұрын
That's so true about depreciation. 10 years ago I badly looked into buying a M7 or MP and didn't for some reason. Now the price of second hand market is just doubled. With brands like Fuji's after 5 years the price is so low that you'd better keep it on the shelf as a trophy of the past instead of selling it for a symbolic dollar. That M11 on the other hand, thanks to its technologies could still be a very capable and valuable camera in ten years. In Leica HQ do they consider you family even if you don't have a Leica camera? What I personally lived and noticed with people who own Leica and even in stores when I talked to people is that those I met (not generalizing here) are just snobs who think society is divided in two: those who can afford Leica and the poor peasants who can't. Very elitists. Worse thing? They know nothing about photography. Leica is just a n accessory to shine. I talked with a honest Leica store manager once and he confirmed that. One day I was in a Leica store in Paris, one of the most known ones, had the money to buy but wanted to hold a camera just to feel it you know, that excitement before spending my fortune. The manager told me in front of his accustomed clients and rich friends: - if you're here just to hold and you don't have the money to buy I won't give it to you, it'll stay in the glass showcase, just look with your eyes. At that point I was so pi***ed I got the money out of my bag and told him: - here's 7000€, I came here to buy, but you know what? F***k off, you're such a snob I'll go elsewhere. That made me rethink my purchase process.

@@REMY.C. I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience. There are indeed snobs amongst Leica owners and perhaps even amongst store staff. However, when I go to Wetzlar they’re super friendly and very willing to let you try out their cameras. You should also take the factory tour, when possible. It’s a unique experience. I go to visit the gallery there. Many Leica stores have excellent exhibitions displaying work of well-known photographers. My colleague bought an SL2 in Wetzlar but he liked the black name script on the SL2-S. The store manager contacted the customization dept. and while we waited they repainted the Leica name in black gloss. It took them an hour, but they didn’t want any payment for that. The other Leica stores in Germany, Vienna and Switzerland (where I live) are similar friendly. The Swiss Leica Professional Service manager lend me an S3 when my H6D malfunctioned at a nearby assignment. No charge. The store manager in Munich gave me an SL2 to try for the day without being sure I was going to buy anything… Overall there are those who consider Leica as a wealth statement and others who value the heritage and engineering. Stay away from the first group and befriend the second.

I purchased a refurbished Leica D-LUX on eBay for less than $400 a year ago just to see if Leica was as good as I have heard and wanted to share the "Leica experience". I was not disappointed. My Leica is an older model but the lens on the D-LUX is FANTASTIC and tack sharp. I am in awe of the images that this small Leica camera produces. It is my everyday carry camera. It fits into the palm of my hand and I love carrying it. My Fujifilm X T-3 is my workhorse camera. I have some of the lenses that you have recommended over the years. Surprisingly, the Fujifilm X T-3 and the Leica D-LUX operate similarly so there is not too much of a learning curve. I love the manual controls on both cameras that allows me to control everything in image making. I am in love with both systems. I would love to have a larger Leica Q2 or the Leica M 11 but the cost is prohibitive and I cannot justify the purchase. Ohh those ikea stools. Look into a drummer stool. When you play drums for hours on in, you gotta be comfortable. As for switching ecosystems, it is what it is. Whatever helps your photography, makes you enjoy shooting, and makes sense to your particular flow, then great! Yeah I might be a Fuji user, but that’s me and my journey. Yours has led you to shooting Leica and that’s perfectly fine. I went from Nikon to Fuji and I’m sticking with Fuji.I’m not planning on jumping ship to another brand because I just switched last year. The flow of the camera is perfectly fine for me. I prefer bigger cameras like what the Nikon Z cameras and the Canon R5 have to offer strictly for comfort, but the cost is a bit out of my budget at the moment. I added a grip to my X-T4 and it put it at the level I’m happy with. As much as I like the size of the other brands camera bodies, I love the size of the Fuji lenses. The Fuji 70-300mm has become my favorite lens for both landscape and wildlife and it fits in my bag perfectly fine.

Excellent video! The camera and lens are a tools that allows you to create and the end result is what matters. Why you chose this tool over that tool is a very personal choice. I have my X-T4 and lens for my wildlife and sports photography that my Leica M-D could never capture due to the distance from subject and the speeds involved. Likewise, the technology and ergonomics of my Fuji could never supplant the fun and enjoyment of using a rangefinder, the simplicity and challenge of having control only over my ISO, aperture and shutter speed. This set up covers 99% of what I want for my end result (the other 1% is there because I'm a retired lawyer and thus never fully commit to anything🤔). Enjoy using your journey!

Starting from Panasonic MFT cameras, a few of the lenses made in partnership with Leica quickly became my favorite [42.5mm f/1.2, 15mm f/1.7]. That led to a few relatively inexpensive Leica M-mount lenses adapted to MFT. Then the Nikon Z was added with the M-to-Z adapter. This led to a few higher-end and more expensive Leica lenses, offering very different character than the native Z-mount lenses. For me, the Leica Z7-M is a nice sweet-spot compared to the M11. Finally, a used Type-246 monochrom was added for natural light, higher ISO, black & white images. The three extra steps to get B&W from a color camera seems to be the difference between "grain" and "noise" at higher ISO. I'm still thinking about a photography trip to South Asia in the next year or two, your trips there are motivating!

I keep switching back and forth. The main reason: WEIGHT, there's maybe a 2:1 difference. I shoot M close to home, Fuji X when traveling. This is also the reason I still sometimes prefer a film M to the digitals. Fwiw, when I do use Fuji X I typically carry a 28mm Elmarit on an adapter. Sometime a 35mm too. Gives a tiny bit of the M experience.

The M11 was the first M body that caught my interest… I have two Leica lenses but the bodies seemed like, in the end, like other camera bodies…. digital rot but at 8x the price. Also, for example, fuji offered more street photography friendly features: the highlight retention of the dr400 mode, the speed, the immediacy of film sims. The m11 appears to offer more highlight retention and a clever live view stabilization to help with manual focus, plus a couple of more function button. But now it needs to work on speed… it has to operate at the speed of film.

Dear Gajan, thank you very much for the interesting video. For me a Leica M-camera is just completely out of my financial league. The price isn´t the only thing, it is just that the limitations are too limiting. And I don´t mean just the auto focus. It is that the camera is hard to handle with focal length smaller than 28 and bigger than 50mm. Even though I don´t shoot that wide or that narrow that often, but from time to time it comes in handy. I own a GFX 50R and combine it with vintage lenses more than with native GF lenses and I am pretty comfortable shooting manually focusing. The GFX 50R body isn´t that much heavier than the M11 body, but you have much more possiblities since the sensor is larger. For me the GFX 50R is the more versatile companien to a GFX 100S. The image quality is outstanding and when you combine it with a M-mount lens you can focus pretty miuch similiar to a Leica. However, if a Leica would cost less I would indeed be tempeted. But for the price of a current Leica body and lens I can get GFX products that make more sense to me.

I've been shooting Leica M for several years now, and it's my favorite system as far as using it goes. I like simple. And I do love the image quality, which is way better than it should be (I have an older 24MP M262). But - it can't do every job I need covered, so I also have a GFX system (for studio work mostly) and I recently added a Canon R system as well because i needed fast AF in low light + more reach. Didn't really want to invest in a third system but if you need a hammer, a saw isn't going to cut it, is it? So, while the Leica M system is my favorite to use, it could never be my only one, especially professionally. On your point about Leica brand priorities: I agree with you about their support for some great journalistic and also art photographers. But I hate that they constantly trot out the same celebrities to promote their brand, more as a lifestyle than anything else. Also the luxury brand image (and associated pricing) put me off from buying into the M system for quite some time. But as a tool, I love Leica M and that's the main thing.

Honestly, I am sorry that you are abandoning Fujifilm X-series as a professional camera. I'm an X-T2 user with multiple lenses, and I shoot for magazines, mostly interviews. I remember when two years ago you said that the 56 1.2, 16 1.4 and 90 f2 lenses were among the best lenses you had ever used, (i use this trio plus 35 1.4) and it saddens me to see how you now throw them away without compunction. I love your work, and I have always been fascinated by the performance you are able to get out of the X-Trans sensor. I have always had you as a reference, and the quality of your photos with Fujifilm has encouraged me to continually improve with my camera. Without a doubt, your work will be magnificent with Leica and Fujifilm GFX Series, because your vision and composition skills are incredible. But with those big sensors, achieving that level of sharpness that you were getting with APS-C will be a little less worthwhile ;) Best regards, and thank you for your great channel.

I'vs started getting into Leica as well (M10, MP and SUmmilux 50 and 35) . My work system is with the Sony fullframe with the perfect GMaster primes. My casual camera is the old Xpro 2 with a bunch of the f2 primes . All I can say is that the Leicas are more about the luxury and the feel at least for me. It does not make sense at all from a technical view point. Calibrating the body to multiple Leica lenses is a pain. Something we don't have to do with mirrorless. But for the way you use it , stopped down in a studio setup - seems to be perfect. No need to worry about nailing F1.4 .

I love your videos. Thank you! I am shooting Nikon D810 using wider primes as my “serious camera” for remote landscapes where I want depth of colour and some resolution in case I crop. I need to minimise weight as I hike so I only take one prime with the Nikon (and its not so light). Gone off the Nikon. It lacks “soul”. I don’t like the JPEGs unless in sunlight and I can’t be bothered to sit all day doing post. I do some but not every shot (my iphone pro is the exception). Which way would you go for landscapes - pay up for a Leica M with a top Leica lens (summicron APO 35mm for example) or go for the cheaper Fuji GFX system with a wide prime. I can probably can get away with 50Rfor landscapes, save a lot of money, and I love the Fuji dials? I keep my Nikon for my kids and action. Have been a Nikon guy for years... since my 14th year when I was offered a thenth hand film F401 camera... Years ago after a bonus and putting money aside, I bought a Nikon D3, and some serious 2.8 focal lenses. After 10 years, I am not using my Nikon any more : carrying the 15kg of glas and camera is exceptionnal and I don't do it regularly anymore. I bought 4 years ago a Fujifilm X100F and used it a lot, it's compact and very usefull and you have it on yourself all the time. But the Fuji has been the most frustrating experience in photography since I begun : it is capable of fantastic pictures, but each time I touch it, I click on a button or turn another one and everything changes, I miss a picture, have to spend time to reset everything and am frustrated. I never used the film capacity either. After a while I heard about Leica Q2... Watched 200 youtube video and could not make my mind about that and Leica are expensive camera for old or rich people (my father had a M2, M3 and R4 when I grew up). After looking on thousands of tests, I decided to test one, to understand what it was all about. Before I new it, I heard about a Q, second hand, for sale not too far away and showed up to test it... I ended up buying it and have never shot so much since this summer. This thing is crazy ! It has all what I need, like a pro camera, without the weight and colume. Of course the only negative is that I just have one lens (not changeable) but it taught me what to look for and how to position myself, instead of changing lens. I started streetphotography and fear that there is no turning back ! My D3 is for sale, my Fuji will soon follow suit, I now understand the difference between cameras and a Leica !

But after some time and after adding some lenses, my fuji collection was worth as much as an Leica M10. And I almost always had my 35mm f1.4 on the pro 3, so why not switch to the m10 and buy an affordable 50mm? I haven’t regret it once and have had my leica for half a year now. 20K for the body and maybe a couple Leica lenses No thanks. You can build an entire Photography studio with several cameras and equipment plus have money left over for that kind of money. To many photographers fall into the trap of thinking the camera makes their photography and sadly end up with to much unnecessary expensive gear. The art of Photography comes from within and not from the camera. Many photographers are even shooting film these days because it's not all about the pixel count and many photographers are even shooting with the camera on their phone with hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram. What I am saying is do you think Vincent van Gogh would have painted a better Painting with a $10,000.00 Brush? I just see to many Leica owners trying to justify there over extended purchase of a Leica to soothe their soul.

The Leica just makes sense for your kind of photography. The resolution and IQ is a big deal. It doesn't makes sense for street photography, travel, and snaps, but the Fujifilm excells there. I agree that Fuji excels in the areas you mentioned but so does Leica. It all comes down to technique and the style in which you shoot. Zone focusing skills are a must and can be faster than autofocusing.
@-grey
@-grey 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevemphoto Yeah, zone focusing is my go to, because it's so fast, but there is an element of skill involved to zone focus well, that makes it less approachable to newcomers. I actually zone/snap focus all the time with my Ricoh GR. I find zone focusing way more forgiving on crop sensors, and it's mostly why I shoot it. The added usability problem that affects a range finder is when you end up in low light and can't see the range finder patch well, don't want to use a flash, or try to quickly zone focus a fleeting moment at f1.4. Those are definitely very common scenarios in street, travel, and snap photography that can't be overcome easily. For those times, it makes way more sense to just have at least a basic AF system if you are picky about hit rate. The GR can suffer here too, but it's of course not as broad ranged as a X-Pro 3 in the same scenario either. Don't get me wrong, Leica is a master of its domain. I just think its domain doesn't cover enough use cases well enough for me to practically ignore the limitations. The Fujifilm just doesn't come with as large a caveat to its practicality is all I'm saying. 100% use the Leica in the studio, controlled or predictable environments, or if you don't mind missing shots a little. I would use a different system for the other times, when timing and unpredictability are in great effect. Like Gajan says he does. ✌️

I think everyone who has/had/is interested in the X-Pro 3 eventually ends up with a leica 😂 Fuji should honestly try and take some queues from Leica for the X-Pro 4, some good manual focus XF lenses would be a start!

This is something that I’ve been ideating on for some upcoming videos. You put enough reps on a Fuji camera, you can’t help but think what Leica might do for your work at some point in the journey.

@@GajanBalan would love to see that video! But yeah, it's slightly frustrating in a way because in many ways the x-pro is actually better than most leica digital cameras, but the fuji is just missing that last little piece of the puzzle, mainly around manual focus lenses and the manual focus aids (or the lack thereof) in the OVF. Leica has the advantage of a fantastic, true rangefinder focusing system, and 75 years of great lenses from themselves and third parties to back it up

I'm currently in the process of switching from a Fujifilm X100V, X-Pro3 and GFX 50R with lenses to a Leica Q in combination with a Leica SL system. I wanted less gear and a more coherent workflow. Creative greetings Alain

If I could afford a Leica, I would have one. But until then, I will continue to enjoy the 2nd best camera company and that would be Fujifilm. 😁

Haha, hey I wouldn’t call them second best. Fujifilm is still my favourite camera company today.

@@GajanBalan personally they are the best. It’s all I use, and will probably ever use. My 2nd best comment was a bit of sarcasm. 😁

I promise you that over the next 6 months I will get shots on my Fuji I couldn't get if I bought a Leica! Simple really I wouldn't be able to afford to go to those places if I bought the Leica.

Ive been an avid photographer since I could hold a camera, and been using Canon DSLRs and mirrorless. Switched to Fuji because the system offers external controls (equal to more control) and OVF (X100 and X-Pro) and great optics, all at affordable prices in the pre-owned market. I still felt the camera overruled the shooter at times with autofocus and light metering delays. The natural consequence was getting into the M system with a M240. Now i benefit from a film and digital body which behave exactly the same with focus and controls, and clicks exactly when I decide. So totally agree with your first reason - process. After the switch, I also found the images more appealing because of superior optics. Sensorwise the M240 felt about the same as Fuji X-Pro2 except one stop less of usable ISO in my taste. Not looking back!
