Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
In our latest episode we explore the 1999 surprise hit GALAXY QUEST, which had a long road to making it to the big screen. Starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Justin Long and Missi Pyle, this riff on Star Trek, directed by Dean Parisot, eventually got over its hurdles and made a galactic splash at the box office. Now, if we could just get that sequel...

Sure. But it never laughed at the fans. Fans know deep down how ridiculous some of the things they love are, and sometimes that’s one of the reasons we love them. But galaxy quest did someone almost unheard of now. It didn’t laugh at its fan base (fictional at the time). In recent years fans haven’t been respected very much. This really was a love letter.

I absolutely will take a moment to appreciate the female form when presented with the opportunity to do so. It is a simple pleasure in life, one of the most basic, in fact. I could deny my nature, but what pleasure is there in that? It's not like my appreciation for an attractive woman harms anyone. And Leo Martin's initial remark is completely valid. Sigourney Weaver looks stunning. I know some people seek to denigrate others for enjoying harmless, private indulgences, but I feel those individuals probably lead sad, pathetic lives and spew their derision out of jealousy. Or perhaps guilt. Or maybe both. So, to sum it up, you're just a hateful little troll, yes? No? *_YES._*

There's a similarly great quip from Laurence Olivier to Dustin Hoffman during the filming of Marathon Man. Dustin Hoffman arrived for shooting a bit worse for wear, so Olivier asked him how his week went. Hoffman tells him that he had stayed up for three days straight to shoot a scene because the script said the character had the look of someone who'd been up for three days. Olivier paused for a bit at the absurdity, and then said, "Why don’t you just try _acting?_ ”

Galaxy Quest is an underrated masterpiece from the 90's, and one of the best Sci-Fi action adventure movies ever. It's Tim Allen's best as an action hero, Allan Rickman's (RIP) best as a supporting good guy, and among Sigourney Weaver's best.

Good video. As comprehensive as it was, you left an important detail out. The weekend it was released, I believe the studio or the distributor and the largest movie chain at the time had a dispute, which caused Galaxy Quest to not be in a lot of theaters across the country. Despite there being a theater where I lived, we had to drive forty minutes to see it. I'm not sure how much this cut into it box office, but I remember it was credited at the time as severely hurting the numbers.

I had the honour of meeting Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) when my daughter worked on a movie with him. He was very kind and welcoming and seemed delighted to talk about his experiences while shooting Galaxy Quest. I asked him what it was like to meet Sigorney Weaver and Alan Rickman and he said that all the cast members were fun to be around. I asked him how he came up with the voice of Mathesar and he replied, “I just channeled my ‘inner alien’”. He introduced me to his lovely wife and autographed my Galaxy Quest DVD. He wrote, “To Vera, Never Give Up, Never Surrender! Enrico Colantoni” Of course it was a wonderful experience and I watch the movie at least a couple of times each year. I even wrote an idea for a sequel starring Enrico, where HE plays a character that experiences an encounter with the true Thermians. As many cameos as possible by the other Galaxy Quest cast would naturally be included, but Mr. Rickmans passing made me lose interest. If Mr. Rickmans family was agreeable, footage of him could be used when other characters referred to his tragic death, and that would be a way to explain his absence and allow the story to continue.

What would you say to an alternate sequal where the Galaxy Quest show and crew were replaced by Firefly's.

I could see them do a sequel, and even have it revolve around Nesmith having to deal with Alexander Dane's (Dr. Lazarus) unexpected death, how it soured his passion for the revived (and now cancelled) Galaxy Quest show, and how the new adventure has to get him over this loss.

This film was awesome for many reasons... and if you pause this video at exactly 6:10 you'll see one of them!!!

Didn't know much about it when it hit screens back in '99 just after Christmas. Went with my sister and brother just out if interest and as something to do after we'd gotten together with our folks for the holiday. Had the time of our lives - and went straight back in to watch it again. Unforgettable moment - and an all-time favorite for all of us from that day on. Now, our kids get it and love it too (all on their own ;)

This movie shows the care that some of the newer remakes of larger franchises lack. Never give up, never surrender!

The story of this movie demonstrates that studio execs have NO CLUE who their audience is. "Oh, that's not right"...one of my favorite lines.

I think most of all it shows that you cannot really plan success and a lot of luck is involved. Studios should let the filmmakers do their job, for better or worse.

As a life long Trek-ie, I loved this under-rated movie! How could a Star trek fan not love a Parody of Star Trek!

As another life long Trek Fan: I'd say that "parody" is closer to the real thing than any of the new stuff made recently ... ;)

To be honest, we love this parody, only because it respects the source and its fans. Back then it was extremely easy to make some terrible "comedy" which laughs out of everything you love about Star trek, and uses dumb one-dimensional stereotypes of fans. GalaxyQuest was a great because it avoided quick and easy mockery. Remove all jokes, and you still get a good Sci-fi movie on its own.

I'm glad they never made a sequel - it would've been impossible to top perfection. Galaxy Quest was simply brilliant - I must have watched it a dozen times now.
