What do you think about the Galaxy S23 Ultra Camera after the software update? Better than the iPhone 14 Pro Max or did Apple come out on top?

I'm an S23 ultra user and very much enjoy using my phone every day. But I really do want the iPhone 15 pro Max to better the s23 ultra camera simply because having stiff competition will keep the manufacturers on their toes to try their best. Without competition, innovation would stall. So having a better camera on the 15 pro Max will ensure a better camera on the s24 ultra.

Danny is the king of camera comparison. Can't go wrong with either but if I had to choose I'll go with the S23 Ultra.

The S23 is simply unmatched, yes the I phone does still have a good camera but this year Samsung is most certainly 1st place!

Thank you for this nice comparison! I don't understand how the camera departement of Samsung can think that their oversharpened videos look good. It looks horrible, especially in 60fps. I hope they bring a feature in Camera Assistant where you can turn off Video Sharpening. That would be really great, to get rid of the oversharpening

I own the 14 pro, and even though it’s “preferred” to have the natural colors the iPhone has in the end it’s all to personal preference…and as my personal preference goes without pixel peeping I saw myself choosing the Samsung photos much more often than the iPhones, if I were to edit the iPhone photos I would probably make them look like what Samsung had straight out of the camera

Samsung is really close with video quality with iPhone now. Both phones can provide top quality stuff but for me S23U is still the best in terms of versatility and options. I think the continuous zoom in S24U will make the difference next year!

A really important thing to consider is not just how phones are when they come out, but how they END UP after all the updates. Are companies improving user experience and adding features or just releasing "new" software where the only thing different is the version number?

cool video! i got to work in seoul for the summer of 95, really loved it there. the food was amazing! anyway, i just got an s23 ultra yesterday, watching tons of videos about settings, i'm curious since you don't mention it, you don't do anything special to the camera settings for preference? these are 'right out of the box' picture and video settings?

I have to thank you I've been so frustrated with my Instagram posts no matter what I do and never looks sharp even with 4K video😢 so thank you for mentioning that I had no idea it was an Android issue! I even tried the setting on IG to turn off Data Saver and still grainy. If anyone knows if this has been fixed...or what to do to fix!!

I have the S22 Ultra and I love the camera but I'm really looking forward to Sony's announcement this Thursday. The fact that Samsung has a robust pro photo/video option in the stock camera app is a win for creatives as well.

As for the portrait mode, though i liked the s23 more when it comes to edge detection, i still commend the iphone's computational background fall off coz it mimics the real background defocus of a real camera

I’ve been using iPhone 14 Pro for over 4 months now and I am someone who does mobile photography a lot (especially Portrait photography) and I am disappointed. The photos have this over-sharpened look to it and I have to reduce the texture every time in Lightroom. Secondly, the contrasty look that you talked about actually results in crushed shadows. Moreover, the photos just look dull in comparison to other phones. Only positive aspect of this phone’s camera is probably the video but that doesn’t really matter to me as I am someone who generally does not shoot videos.

Keduanya luarbiasa, saling memukul, S23 belum bisa meng-handle warna merah dengan natural (saturasi sedikit berlebihan) menyebabkan awb menjadi kurang konsisten, ip14 masih kewalahan lawan highlight / cahaya terang & shadownya kadang terlalu gelap. PRO RAW Image ip14 lebih efisien storage dengan 48MP yang hasilnya tidak kalah dengan 200MP S23. Untuk performa zoom S23 masih memimpin. Keduanya luarbiasa dan telah memasang standar yang sangat tinggi untuk flagship generasi selanjutnya ! 👏👏👏

Thank you so much! I love my S23 Ultra but I miss all the clear pictures when shooting in darker scene of my dog. It is nearly always blurry on my S23. Perhaps next time also some test with moving object in darker conditions?

Okay, difference is so small it really comes down to personal preference. Like, I doubt many of us will go in such a deep analysis with any of the pics in our gallery. (In constant wait for next years model and endless comparissons do we actually get to enjoy the devices?) What ruins the experience for me, on my S23 Ultra is shutter lag and motion blur as the result of it. I mean, I really couldn't care less about which phone has better details on windows on 1000% zoom, but blurry picture of anything that's moving (kid, pet...) should just be big NO in 2023. And it's the same problem Samsung devices have for years now. I can't really understand why they keep ignoring it as camera software always comes out as the weakest point of the whole device. All that ram, powerful processor, lenses and still - motion blur is as present as it was on S7 edge. Unfortunatelly, I really can't use device that doesn't even have split screen and that only connects well with devices from same company so - I chose S23 Ultra instead of Iphone. If one does only care about the camera - Iphone is still better choice. At least, results are predictable. And, let me get back to the first part of my comment - companies and their aggressive marketing made such a mess (and profit for them) that people even argue in comments which camera is better. Let's be honest - 99,99 percent of us would be totally fine even with cameras on 200-300 bucks devices these days. 😅

Well if you get either of these expensive flagships I don’t thinking we don’t even have to compare. They both offer amazing results no matter what

I noticed something. For example at 6:25 while the angles of the shades look similar, there is a big difference between the buildings. I wonder why that is.

Im glad youre talking about the reflections on iPhones ... its unacceptable they still have those for that price, yet most "reviewers" dont even mention them. I dont use my IP14 for that reason lot of times, since therres just light everywhere even if the overall video is better.

Right off the bat the S23U selfie video looks so much more detailed and with richer, natural, nuanced colours.

Do an evening to night time video. where you show settings for video for s23u as this is where all phones fall down in quality and sruggle.with noise and shutter speed/blurry images

How can you take the same shot on both phones at the same exact time???

On the zoom shots, it's a lot more noticeable when the subject is small, like performers or animals.

I think the S23 took the more ready out the box/mass appealing photos. Peeps aren't looking for a canvas they want that ready made served up. Both excellent shooters though.

Danny I love your work you have done there. But you really need to judge the photos from a good professional 4K monitor. I am watching the video with a professional 4K monitor and I can see a lot of differences between these two phones. Generally the iPhone 14 Pro looks a lot better.

This year has yet to finish, and the Pixel 8Pro and iPhone 15PM are to come, as well as the P60 Pro and the Xiaomi 13Ultra global. I expect by the end of the year, when we do the "Best of 2023", there will be 5-6 phones closely matched on camera. My conclusion in 2023 is that phones are now so close that it comes down to brand loyalty as to why people choose one over the other.

Thank you for the comparison. I love my S23 Ultra. I live on the beach and shoot scenery, wildlife and people. I've even found a fantastic 100% waterproof case for it, and it comes in the sea with me as I'm a wild swimmer. I'm looking forward to seeing what it does with landscapes as thd seasons change.

Day/Night time Photos and Portrait: I'd give the Edge to S23 Ultra Video and Portrait Video: iPhone Zoom: S23 Ultra But seriously you can't go wrong with any of these two

I have both phones. For photos of people using either the front or rear camera, the iPhone is better. The color is more realistic. Samsung overbrightens photos of the face because Koreans want to appear lighter, so they are catering to that audience. Also, Samsung’s camera oversharpens to the point that it doesn’t even look realistic. For photos of landscapes or nature, the Samsung is probably better. It’s saturation helps colors of flowers to pop for sure, as well as the sky.

We are still waiting for that big camera update for S23 Ultra, which is gonna come in May

Portrait and video is still best in Iphone. I hope some day Android could get natural portraits, cause I prefer android over ios, but for now... Its unmatched

what I hate about my s23 ultra is that video captured by the camera only sound from the right speaker if we watch it with headphones

someone tell me if am wrong but.. unless an iphone is released with buggy camera system, such laggy processing or the camera app crashing or something to do with the software, apple won't release updates.. meaning the processing u get out of an iphones camera will most likely remain the same .. whereas android manufacturers release updates regularly to enhance the image processing

I like flatter looking photos. Just more moody. So s23u for normal photos, ip14p for portrait mode, proraw better on ip14p, s23u smart raw getting better, 10x on ip14p looking decent maybe from software updates, s23u better in zoom no doubt, food is definitely important, I like the saturated shots but I will take flatter and darker again, just not as saturated happy at my age, prefer like flatter more boring looking, feels realer. And ip14p delivers everything in dolby vision photos and videos, just turn off low power mode and reduce white point all the blown out highlights will scream bright. Did not know winget has family in korea. Nice. I use to study in ansan hanyang u.

Its my first time to have samsung and yeah. Im so amazed. S23 ultra beats the iphone for many reason. But still i always love iphone. I dont know if im going to by the 15 pro max soon or the S24. Its hard to choose.
