Galaxy Z Flip & Fold 3: Small Changes Make a Big Difference

This is Samsung’s third year making smartphones that fold and like always, they’re making some big claims: IPX8 water resistance, a more natural-feeling, scratch-resistant protective layer over the flexible glass, and just better durability all-around.
In this video, we look at the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold 3 in a bit of a folding phone extravaganza. We’re not expecting radical repairability improvements, but we are excited to learn how they pulled off water resistance with so many moving parts.

So water can still get in, but if you design a system like that, which would be "Water friendly" then I assumed you should give the water a way to get in and a way to get out. .. 'Cause you don't want any water staying inside longer than it should (I mean after you take it out of the tank, water should get out as soon as possible)

@xrslive 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're both right, but evaporation doesn't mean you got rid of humidity That's why I got a little concerned about that when he opened it up, those were big water drops right there, and since I want to buy myself a foldable phone. .. Well, you can still say that it might be water resistant for a while, but not water proof like JRE showed us with MrMobile

Manufactures are using "water resistance" as a poor excuse to glue the whole device shut. They just want to avoid making it more repairable. The most environmentally and consumer friendly approach would be a modular design like the Galaxy S5, which had a user removable battery and water resistance...

Uh, probably just making a better phone is probably much more important than making it more repairable. Most people don't repair their own phones, and also a lot of people don't switch because their old devices are broken. Right to repair is definitely needed, but I guess anything that has to be done is that the manufacturer should provide parts and repair manuals, and remove proprietary screws and software locks. Repairability is important, but probably a better screen, more processing power, or longer battery life is much more important to most people.

Plus with the durability being so bad. If your phone screen reliably breaks after a few months, you should at least make the phone easily repairable so there’s less of a chance of it just ending up in a landfill.
@DGao-zz5vq
@DGao-zz5vq 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly it doesn't look that bad. Ignore the panel removal process, accessing the internals for repairs is pretty much the same process as in a glass sandwich. And even for slab phones, people tend to fix broken panels by replacing the panel and the midframe as an assembly. The panel glue being hard to access isn't that much of a big deal. And there's a purpose to what Samsung is doing here. Slab phones can achieve ingress resistance without excessive glue, see Xperia Active and Galaxy S5. But I don't see rubber gaskets replacing the glue behind the panel. Without glass reinforcements on the other side, the gaskets might just create a visible bump on the panel.
@unknown3158
@unknown3158 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by “environmentally conscious”? You mean people repair their phones instead of getting a new one? Considering how expensive repairing a phone is nowadays, most people would probably just get a new one. Also, you need to prioritize, in this case Samsung prioritized design, usability and durability over repairability, and I for one am Ok with that. It is kinda hard to nail everything, if they could, they would have had, unless of course it would be expensive.

@@DGao-zz5vq "accessing the internals for repairs is pretty much the same process as in a glass sandwich" Which, even though we're all used to it by now, always has been and always will be bad. @DGao-zz5vq
@DGao-zz5vq 2 жыл бұрын
@@mjc0961 good, Google doesn’t want me to respond, so here’s a TLDR Panel laminated to a metal frame is standard practice, see Fairphone 3. External front display being laminated is acceptable, do you really want to crack open the panel with fingernails? Old iPhones’ screws+clips doesn’t provide ingress protection. Back panel can be made more accessible, heat-less accessibility for the main battery and the I/O is preferable to “premium feels”. But overall, a device centered around the protection of a panel as fragile as this, as accessible as the average slab, is a remarkable feat.

Lol you traded crap for crap. 🤣 Yeah, the 1st Gen UTG phones had an infamous propensity to shatter down the fold-line after a year or two of use, but the RAZR/5G really wasn't much better and was also a significantly worse phone. 🤷 SOOOOO many of those screens died or broke via things like display delamination. There's a reason Motorola immediately switched to UTG as well.
