The Finals- select performances.
This video features the winners of "THE FEELS", "THE HEELS" and "THE THRILLS".
Dancers in order of appearance:
@jan.gold
@chrisnshep (Congratulations to our winner!!!)
@ironbry
.........
Here's an explanation of the event! tvBzv-g1HF...
And a recap of the event:
• Galen Hooks Presents "...
........
“Freestyle Roulette: Live Event” is a dance event created so that any dancer of any style can showcase their abilities in a high stakes, supportive environment. This event rewards creativity, whether you’ve been dancing for 10 years or 10 months, by judging not based on dance skill but rather based on interpretation of a prompt.
The dancer spins a wheel and is given a song at random, then spins a second wheel for a prompt at random. The dancer has to interpret the prompt to the song, dancing unrehearsed.
“Freestyle Roulette” is an exercise used in the @thegalenhooksmethod intensives to train dancers in committing to artistic choices. At times it is used for practical training, for example to prepare dancers for industry auditions or shoots where they are asked to do often awkward things that they have to commit to and deliver confidently.
Following the GHM sessions, students would often rent studio space to continue practicing alone or with small groups of friends. This event expands it to the greater dance community with curated judges who are not only at the top of their fields, but whom dancers rarely have the opportunity to be seen by. The judges are reciprocally exposed to talent they would rarely have the opportunity to see.
And lastly, this event allows us to discover new music and artists, often with the entire audience and the dancer hearing the song for the first time.
In order to make room for all dance styles, 3 categories were offered: THE FEELS (slow, moody songs), THE HEELS (sensual songs danced in a heel), and THE THRILLS (upbeat, hype songs).
Any dancer could enter any category and do any dance style they wanted to within that category.
Participants flew from around the world to attend. Dancers from all styles, backgrounds, and ages came together for this community event.

Let's just say I wouldn't be opposed to Najla Gilliam making an hour-long youtube video of her improvising - this woman, person, dancer, (is she even human?) has the most peculiar, captivating movement I have ever seen. OBSESSED. Thanks Galen for introducing this talent to us!

The only way I can describe the 1st woman's musicality in dance is; it's almost like she crawls into the music, it's hard to explain. Poetry meets Hip hop/ Contemporary. The girl at the end was like a chameleon, adaptive to all genres of music through dance, so I get why she won. The final 3 were all extremely talented IMO. However, the 1st lady is uniquely gifted in her own right. Kudos. Shout out to Galen for putting the event together, showcasing undiscovered dancers from around the world. Great idea. Off topic now... The 1st dancer does look like Keke Palmer though.

i know exactly what you mean. she's such an incredibly talented, evocative dancer. i think Christine interpreted the prompt better, and christine's snake and black widow dances were unbeatable, but Najla has something so painfully beautiful about her dancing. i don't know how else to put it.

Yessssss the second girl portrayed the two personalities the best! The first girl I couldn't see the first split and I wasn't feeling the guy much tbh. Maybe it was the song choice?
@sricha7800
@sricha7800 4 жыл бұрын
1409musiclover she did!!! That was amazing! Najla also did really good. Christina was the tormented version of her so her actions were much more sharp. Went she went to the other dude, her dance moves were a bit looser and it was like she was saying “look I’m smiling now” but quickly turned from that reality to the bad side

i wasn't feeling the guy either but i think it was due to his dance style, wasn't he krumping ? it looked like that and i never get krumping no matter who does it... tbh i think this dance style is one of the less impressive to the inexperienced eye. so yeah my theory is that maybe the guy was actually really good in his dance style and had a powerful message, but to our amateur eyes we couldn't tell lol

For Najla its like she tries to put up this tough front. But she is consumed with guilt and believes herself to be a demon in front of her good side. She approaches her bad side as if she is the most comfortable with her demons. She wants to be good. She bows in front of that innocent light, but she doesn't believe in herself. She has no self worth. But that's for when Christine is the good side. When the man is the good side, its like she's trying to convince herself that she is good. That she belongs there. And when she sees her bad self she is angry and annoyed, as if denying she has ever done anything wrong. For Christine its like shes an animal. She seduces and appeals to what looks good and what looks tasty. She goes on instinct, something that isn't human. something wholly pure and raw. but when she sees her bad side, the human side, she scared of it. Because she knows that its stronger than her. The human side is calculated and dangerous. Twisted and inherently evil. So she runs back to the good. I feel like the guy is trying to figure out what side is good and what side is bad. In this world where everything isn't black and white. What is good or bad? In the beginning, it's like he's sniffing Najla to figure out what she is like a dog.

I love how much you can see in Christine's dance! At first she's circling her good side (the one she likes), she's concentrating solely on it. But she also can't completely look away from the bad side. She tries to face it, but it's difficult. It makes her mad. She forces herself at some point, but you can see how it makes her suffer and how torn she feels in the end with both loving and hating herself.

This is so interesting! I always saw it as the opposite, as in the guy is the bad side (where she's more seductive to) and the girl is the good side (one she feels angry and almost mocking towards, but can't completely ignore. It's like her conscience) 👀 I love reading how different other interpretations are!

I personally think the victory was well earned, Christine’s interpretation was beyond amazing and she won fair and square. I’m curious as to know what you think Nadja should have done better to win, because although I respect that she is an equally talented dancer with wonderful technique I feel like Christine tackled the prompt much better.
@user-hk6yu5yf2w
@user-hk6yu5yf2w 3 жыл бұрын
@@aarnzoo5124 I personally think differently Nadja showed a beautiful transformation, a person going through a cycle of climbing and falling. Showing remorse to the good side, swear you'll change, yet running to the bad side every time. Christine showed a simpler story. A person who's constantly on the bad side, looking to the good side in a rare occasion and then shoving that away. Both were amazing. But I think the nadja expressed the story with more accuracy and intensity. I love christine and I'm glad to find so many videos of her dancing online, but I wish nadja would've gotten the same attention. Her style Expresses a story in such a beautiful genius way and I'm simply stunned! Christine definitely deserves her own win, but I believe that in comparison nadja deserved it more
@azeenanj9185
@azeenanj9185 3 жыл бұрын
@@aarnzoo5124 i think najla's interpretation was great but not for a live competition, the meaning was deeper and therefore too hard to decipher on the spot (well, at least for most people). it would've been good for a music video where people get to rewatch it and take their time to understand, in this setting i think the judge didn't clearly understand her message. otherwise i also strongly believe she would have won with a different interpretation, her dance style & the way she moved was truly on another level... christine was awesome don't get me wrong but najla was otherwordly. all in all it was still a fair win like you said, christine interpreted it better for the setting she was in and that is a skill in itself.
@aarnzoo5124
@aarnzoo5124 3 жыл бұрын
@@azeenanj9185 I completely agree. Nadja’s an amazing dancer without a doubt. But like you said, in a live competition, the dancer needs to alter their interpretations in order to cater to the audience and judge’s perception, hence why keeping your interpretation simple yet effective, so more people can understand it, than making it intricate and complex, thus difficult to decipher on the spot. That’s why I think Christine won- because she knew EXACTLY how to win the audience’s favour, and delivered on it. In the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their different opinions. Nadja’s an incredible dancer and I’m sure she’ll go very far :)

I love and came here for number 2 bc I’ve seen their performances but in this itself I favored this specific dance for number 3 but all of them I could see having their own flair in their own different dances

I had a lil tears in my eyes, when the judges said something, because it’s so goddamn true. They put into words what I felt about the dance community. Thank you for that!!
