Ever wondered what life is like for the average Senegalese? Well, so did I! That's why I packed my bags and embarked on an eye-opening month-long journey with 370,000 CFA ($600) in hand, which is double the average monthly salary of a Senegalese citizen.
During my stay, I fully immersed myself in the daily life of a Senegalese local - eating their cuisine, navigating the streets like they do, and essentially living within the budget of an average Dakar resident.
But here's the big question: Can $600 sustain me for an entire month in Dakar?

Thats because lot of european expats go to the big cities of senegal. As either business owners, high salary important job or governemental job Senegal being the subsaharian african country the closest from europe. And also very secure and stable compared to other african countries

Absolutely awsome work my man ! The accuracy of the informations is just remarkable. I'm a senegalese from Casamance, born and raised in Dakar, with part of my family being Gambian nationals, and the fact that you talked about all these checkpoints on the road really hits home. Every time i would travel, since i was a child, to Casamance or Gambia, i always found stupid all these checkpoints and sarching your luggage stuff. Same people, same culture, same family names but yet all this crap. I absolutely like your content and the fact that you always take into account that spiritual aspect, with the quran, halal earnings, praying in the mosque... May Allah safeguard and bless you ya akhy fiLlah.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to immerse yourself in Senegalese culture and showcase it on your platform. As a Senegalese living abroad, it was refreshing to see someone trying to understand and share the everyday life of our people. I was saddened by your encounter with the police officer at Goree Island. I want to assure you that such opinions and actions are individual-based and do not reflect the sentiments of the larger Senegalese community. Senegal and Gambia share a deep-rooted bond, and we see each other as one. I hope this one negative experience doesn't overshadow the myriad of positive interactions and experiences you might've had. Keep up the great work, and I hope you continue your journey exploring and understanding cultures around the world.

❤ Senegal is a business contry like Dubaï. French-speaking Ivorian, Cameroonian and Congolese Africans come to Senegal for university studies, the Turks arrived for the construction of the new stadium, the Chinese for the construction of highways but there are large Senegalese companies which build roads in the country, in the Gambia and as far as Guinea and Liberia. Guinean immigrants often do odd jobs that the Senegalese do not want because there is not much money. Senegalese people are in all sectors of the economy it is the Senegalese themselves who manage the business of the country. They are very good businessmen and contribute to the development of the country unlike The Gambia. The Senegalese own almost all the buildings and the Lebanese who were there before independence with the complicity of France have been replaced. Our Guinean brothers are in small business and the Senegalese hold the bulk of the business. Senegal is an open country but the business is in the hands of the Senegalese.. @@laminesow911 maybe we live in two different Senegal. Because when you say only the Mourids are competing with the foreign businessmen, I wonder if you are serious or just joking around. The bulk of the economy comes from small businesses (commerce, fisheries, etc.). TER is not owned by French, they built it and have a subsidiary that is running it for a given term. But maybe all senegalese are Mourids then, since they are the only ones competing with the foreigners lol. The same situation is present in most African countries, the former colonial powers are still going to meddle with the affairs of the "former" colonies, but people are waking up and more are actually fighting against the system.

Hello. I loved this vlog. I just wanted to clarify something, when you said that guineans contribute largely to our economy, this is not correct because most of them do not actually pay taxes. They actually work ( we can say that they are hardworking people tho ), gain money and keep it or invest it in their country ( most of them ). Also Fann residence come before Almadies.

Especially the food and regular living costs, it’s similar to Sweden but we earn around 2000$ after taxes. I have no idea how the people living here can manage but they do alhamdulillah. Just been here almost two weeks but I’m looking forward to learn more and connect with people here, even though I don’t speak Wolof or French. Africans need to meet, work together as one to help streghten our countries, culture... and blood ties. We should evoid all the bad things toward our brothers. Try not to cheat or take advantages from an African brother... reatch out for him, help him out and life goes on. We should build a 50/50-Africa! Many regards from Luanda, Angola

Dakar is very expensive. The crazy thing is that there are people earning less than 100K per month, imagine how tough it must be for them. One detail though, the average Senegalese in Dakar always takes the cheapest means of transportation, not taxis and trains, or at least quite rarely. The biggest problem for many remains rent, apartments are beyond expensive and the Government seriously needs to impose severe regulations because this is just ridiculous. Overall, very good video, hope you come back 😉 PS: Sorry for the experience in Goree with that "police officer" people like that don't represent us, we are known for our hospitality.

Very nice and interesting video. Senegal was my first introduction to Africa in 93....a very memorable time enjoying the people and culture of that great country. I must say, the first apartment you showed at 70,000 CFA is only $113 a month in the states. That will get you a one night stay in an HI hostel dormitory here in Boston. On the other hand, the cost of laundry is horrific in Senegal! I can wash & dry 3 loads of clothes for $3500 CFA at my local coin operated laundromat. The food prices you quoted seem low, but I'm aware that costs are hard on the locals. Hopefully with the right political & economic reform, things will get better in Senegal where economic growth only seems to be benefiting the rich.

Dakar looks like a vibrant, fun city full of culture. I'd like to visit, especially since a high school friend of mine from Senegal has been begging me to visit her. I've never been to a French-speaking country in Africa. 😊
