Episode 4: Billions, Bullets, Bravado
By the end of 2018, about six million Kenyans were betting on the SportPesa platform every day and the company made an average of Sh600 million a day.
The company enjoyed explosive growth from its relatively humble beginnings of making over 1 billion in 2014, when it was set up, to a turnover of Sh150 billion in 2018, just before the government pulled the plug on the company over a tax dispute and security concerns about some of its owners.
SportPesa was Kenya’s most successful betting company; Kenya’s betting craze was created by this company. At its height, it was unreal, it took the country by storm.
The amount of money in betting is simply astounding, the number of people involved is staggering, and the effects of betting in Kenya’s population are unquantified.
Just what happened in SportPesa boardrooms? Is the company really guilty of the crimes it was accused of? But, what did the company do to warrant the aggressive clampdown never seen in the country before? In this episode, we bring you all the protagonists in the story.

The "informant" is not telling us anything earth shattering that would necessitate the secrecy that he has been given. Banning Sportpesa was not about stopping gambling or about taxes it was simply about business rivalry and that is why most of the other betting companies in Kenya are owned by well connected individuals in the society.

Someone works for 6 months, you consume content for FREE then start complaining about soundtrack being boring? Stop behaving like an entitled brat. Hi quality production on this series, kudos to the team that put it together. What gambling addiction has done to those who lost their lives and their families left behind, is unfortunate. Poleni sana.

Basically, government officials saw the amount of money in the betting industry and decided to take it over. The current taxes almost always guarantee that those who gamble will lose 80 to 90% of their bets meaning more revenue for KRA and the well-connected individuals who own the current top betting firms.

Nimeifwatilia tangu episode 1. KRA thought they outsmarted the betting site by imposing the with-holding tax. But then that tax obligation is carried forward to the consumer, ie place a bet of 100kes , your total stake reads 90bob so the sites still wins in this struggle...and if they used the initial approach of taxing the winnings, its still a win for betting site because there are more loosers than winners when sports betting. This people work with odds in every aspect of their operations

If Africans knew they would stay away from betting...it's like a drug and it's side effects dire, and those behind many betting business are money launders, drug, weaponry dealers, some even involved in human trafficking and gotta be care ful with zungus esp from eastern Europe , that said Sports pesa could / should have invested more in Kenya , tangible things like stadiums, sports academies, schools, hospitality etc ..but to see poor Kenyans addicted to gambling/betting🙏🙏🙏

Their is no employment and the youth need money to satisfy their needs like food, girlfriends and live a luxurious life .University students and graduates are the most suffering from the impact of betting because some think they can turn betting to employment and can get rich through betting but this is only their wishful thinking. When one looses on a large amount for e.g 10,000 he only gets aggressive and bets with more and more after loosing and loosing...they lose hope, and have no other way out. Live betting and virtual betting are the most dangerous of all koz it only takes seconds and a few minutes to know the results.
