I was at this game. In the 300s at the end the Islanders shot at in the second period. Maybe 5 rows from the roof.

As Bob Hope would say, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

When you consider what the same group of players (for the most part) did over a 5 year period for the New York Islanders --- making it to 5 straight Stanley Cup finals and winning 4 of them consecutively and in the process winning 19 straight playoff series (not even the great Montreal 5 cup team of the late 50's or the 4 Cup team of the late 70's did that), then you honestly have to believe that this may be the greatest Hockey _team_ dynasty ever (not historical _franchise_ dynasty --- that of course goes to Montreal). Quite a performance --- one that gets glossed over and is conveniently never mentioned by certain NHL fans of certain franchises nowadays --- I don't blame them --- it was the greatest single stretch of Hockey ever played --- one of the great sports accomplishments of all time. Thank you gentlemen (including the great Al Arbour) --- you were (and still are) truly something special.

i think a case could be made that they are the greatest team in the history of team sports
@Hernal03 Жыл бұрын
@@bb-gc2tx I would wholeheartedly agree with you on that one, not just because I've always been of fan of that magical team, but simply because of the facts. Thanks for bringing up the thought, I think that's likely where I wanted to go when I started the post. Stay safe and let's be thankful for this channel helping keep the memories alive!

There is a sports channel broadcast of this game with Jiggs and Eddie.

Agree, this team would be a nightmare for any of the others, those Canadian teams, Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay Red Wings, Orr, Esposito Bruins, they swept Gretzky, Messier Oilers, etc...

The Tonelli/Merrick/Nystrom line were sheer terrors in this series.

Around the time of these finals, my dad claims he tried to be clever. Living in a far rural area near Thunder Bay, Ontario at the time, he was still one year away from marrying my mom. My mom wasn't that much into hockey yet at the time, but with her being from Minnesota and the North Stars being in the finals, it supposedly gave my dad a good excuse to have these games on. Nice job, Dad.😁

Even though the North Stars managed to win a game against the Islanders in this series, Mike Bossy in his book said that the Vancouver Canucks the following year were a tougher team to play against.

This looks great. I've been wondering though. It's fairly easy to find WWOR footage of the Islanders winning in 82 and 83. In 80 they were on CBS for the clincher. 81 it's always CBC. Was this series aired locally at all with Jiggs mcdonald and co like the others? Is it just that nobody taped the local broadcast in 1981 for some reason? Or was WOR off limits from broadcasting it that year?

SportsChannel absolutely carried this game exclusively in the NY area but any footage from that broadcast is very rare. It is one of the “holy grails” of Islanders footage collecting. Very hard to find but they were absolutely there.

Sometimes silver is more valuable than gold !!! Islanders win 2 cups in a row !!!

I been looking at interviews with Ken Morrow but can't find a question I would ask, "Is winning the gold medal or the Stanley Cup the better personal achievement " I wonder what he thinks. Then how about the gold medal or 4 Stanley Cups ?

It's amazing what the Islanders did over those 5 years; especially with a crap goalie like Billy Smith. Most dynasties are anchored by their goalies. Not the Islanders. That is a testament to how good their lineup was. Just when you thought they were as good as they could get......they roll out 20 year old Brent Sutter.

Yes because crap goalies make the Hall of Fame all the time….. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
