I spent about a year working on an open-source MBC3 cart design, and I remember trying to use a CPLD or an FPGA to replace that custom MBC3 chip. I was (and still am) an amateur when it comes to electrical engineering, but was able to program all of the behavior EXCEPT for the real-time clock. Nintendo didn't use any kind of standard for their real time clock, just a big binary counter. Re-creating this circuit takes up a LOT of space on a chip. Choosing a chip then becomes a balancing act: -must have low power consumption -must have enough capacity for the real-time clock circuit -must use correct voltage, OR we need a power efficient regulator It starts to make sense why Nintendo made a custom chip for this. I think a lot of problems could be alleviated if we could edit the ROM to use Binary-Coded Decimal (BCD) for the real-time clock, which is what modern Real-Time Clock chips use. Then, we could have a dedicated RTC chip to store the time, and our PLD could read/write it as necessary. We would use less power, because RTC chips consume almost nothing, and we could probably get away with using a smaller PLD. Then we could finally get rid of the MBC3 chip for good. It's also a little discouraging doing all this work while the EverDrive GB X7 exists. It's a great product, and it makes all of this work feel a bit pointless. There's still a niche for single-game flash carts, but that niche feels like it's shrinking all the time.

Hey this was super interesting to see how the different carts function side by side! I definitely want to make my own physical collection more complete with these. I was wondering more about your experience with the Funnyplaying carts. I recently got 2 “MidnightTrace GB/GBC FLASH CART V2” with dip switches, but I assume you have the V1. I got them to play SmithPlays’ Crystal Legacy romhacks and am having some issues. I was able to flash the romhacks onto the cart but it seems to have issues in my GB Operator. Any time I try to backup, write, save, or play on the Operator it bugs out like crazy. This also happened when I tried Crystal Clear’s romhack. However, I have zero problems using them on OEM Gameboy consoles. Do you know if it has something to do with the cart itself compared to other flashable ones? Or does this happen based on the hack itself? I filed a bug report but I haven’t heard back from the Epilogue team yet. Thanks!
