The Elder Dragon trio is complete! Here is my reaction to the Monster Hunter Rise Teostra theme. Of the three Elder Dragon themes, Teostra theme is one I've never really payed too much attention to until now. It was nice to finally sit down and dive deep into it. As it's always the case with Monster Hunter music, I was surprised with the depth and quality!

The introduction to Dalamadur’s theme gives me chills every time. It matches up with both regular and Shah’s actions in the cutscene perfectly and makes you feel like you’re going up against an ancient deity unlike any other. I also adore how phase 2 is basically a triumphant reprise of the main theme (particularly the part that plays in the quest clear theme)
@therighttrousers343
@therighttrousers343 3 жыл бұрын
@@emblemblade9245 Just my thoughts here: Beyond the cutscene notes of ethereal mystery and intimidation, phase 1 starts off as a grand, intimidating kingly march like a procession of sorts, and then partway though phase 1 it gets to the little wind section and then the brass echo of it to represent the player being small but then mighty enough to face him, like a 'you got this far, you deserve to be here!' and then phase 2 starting with the loud notes to demonstrate anger, and shifting the drum tempo and losing those motivating sections to represent Dalamadur starting to take you seriously, which I also visualise as him getting annoyed with his royal musicians trying to sneakily support you. It also sounds, as well as more oppressive with that drum track, more...equal? Graduated? Like it's trying to convey a message of 'there's not going to be a big step-up moment, nor is this a time to rush for the finish. Take it steady, this is a battle of endurance.' or I might just be mapping my thoughts of the fight onto the score. Either way, if I have literally one problem with the Dalamadur fight, it's that the second score starts way too early. You basically hit his back and it starts. It should for me ideally start when he collapsed the pillar.

I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY! I knew, when I heard Narwa's theme, that I'd heard that melody before! It was Narwa's leitmotif the whole time. Its presence there, though, is musically implying that Narwa has riled up all these Elder Dragons that are now threatening the vicinity of Kamura. It's like a little post-it-note stuck to the Elder's grand manifesto that says "Hey, I put him up to this. -Narwa P.S. Your village is doomed." As for Teostra's theme itself, that sort of combined Middle African and Arabian influence is definitely there, far more than in previous versions of his theme from previous games. Where before he came across as a European Emperor, now he's themed more along the lines of a Middle-Eastern Sultan. There's a point you discuss at 6:20 - which I believe is actually reflective of one of Teostra's mechanics; the changeover from "explosion mode" (lots of those delayed attack notes preceded by anticipatory crescendos) to "flame mode" (characterized by brilliant, violent flourishes between bouts of low menace). It's these moments of menace that Narwa's leitmotif enters, as if in his most violent state, the influence of Narwa behind him is most apparent. If I'm right, that's some *delicious* musical storytelling.

Great analysis as always! I think the Rise version is closer to the original version. It's a bummer that the strength of the intro is gone compared to the MHW version, but l like the Rise version. The rhythm of the percussion produces the lordly vibe , as if Teostra is swaggering and making fun of hunters. What a gorgeous theme. Thank you for your enjoyable and insightful video! I couldn’t notice the references to Narwa’s theme. I’ll try to listen that carefully now! Btw, this theme reminds me of the desert theme for New Super Mario Bros. , so I just can’t help feeling a little bit of comical vibe in this theme. . . .

@Pascll

personally, I'd guess one reason for the middle eastern inspiration might be to liken him to a sultan, or other types of middle eastern royalty. one famous story that takes place in the middle east is aladdin, which is of course about a guy who wants to become rich/royalty to marry a princess. I don't know about you, but when I hear this theme, that's all I can think of. another reason why I think this is because it sounds much less intense than his other themes. his old theme has some extremely strong percussion, his world theme has some really intense orchestra, but this theme is comparatively pretty calm. it's like his previous themes portrayed teostra as this destructive dragon, while his rise theme depicts him as an arrogant king.

7:31 I'm really curious whether the Narwa theme part is also hidden in Magnamalo's theme, because since Nergigante in world, there's a tendency where the flagships are the anti-heroes (when it took down the final boss) and magnamalo is also the same here in taking part in the hunt for Allmother Narwa. So I wonder if Magnamalo doesn't have that aspect as the counter-force against the source of the rampage, or does he have it somewhere in its theme. Very, very interesting point indeed you raised.

I thought this was very informative and interesting! Although I feel a need to point out that the part you said was based off of Narwa's theme has been present in pretty much every game Teostra has ever been a part of. I think this is a case of a happy coincidence more than anything.

also that part of the theme that you noticed Narwa and Teostra share is from the Series theme Proof of a Hero. most boss themes have some part of Proof of a Hero, hidden somewhere in the track.

6:19 maybe you mean very HOT. I've always loved Teostra's theme and this new version captures the volcanic/desertic heat, the royalty and the arrogance that only a Teostra would show. Also I totally didn't notice the Narwa reference was in this theme too!

I would say that the percussion is leaning towards Middle Eastern, perhaps Arabian in particular. In Arabian music, there's certain drum rhythms that can be played that each have a name. If I'm correct, what we're hearing in the beginning of Mufasa's theme is called Malfuf(Dom tak-tak! Dom tak-tak!). My music professor specializes in Arabian music, so everything I explained came from her. (Edited because I got two completely different rhythms mixed up.)

Definitely a bursting, exploding theme. Just like teostra would do, it delicately sets up, and strongly delivers. Both delicate precision and searing strength. You can feel the heat building up. This is probably my favorite rendition of Teostra's theme. It's the one that represents him best. He's been using the MHDos Lunastra theme for too long. This one feels like him. (The MHW Lunastra theme is a giant misrepresentation of the dynamic between them. It portraits Lunastra as a more dainty, gentler Teostra, when it's actually exactly the opposite. Lunastra is the threat, the aggressive, approaching one. Teostra is elusive, rare, dignified. This theme finally does him justice. The Emperor of Flame.)

Pretty sure that "reference to narwa" is the other way, since luna/teo are the raging couple, and ibushi/narwa are the new raging couple, it makes sense both being couples and elder dragons, i could even call it a sort of leitmotif for elder dragon couples.

The Narwa theme part might have just come from Teostra's theme originally. Teostra's theme, all the way back in MHDos, had this part. Sounds a lot to me like they sort of took inspiration from themselves, or if it was a new composer, then took inspiration from the one who wrote Teostra's theme. Could be wrong. But it sounded like the usual theme there. I will agree the other tracks ape it from Narwa's theme, for sure, though.
