Can't watch this battle without thinking of the lyrics to the song Ygritte sings, "I am the Last of the Giants" Ooooooh, I am the last of the giants, my people are gone from the earth. The last of the great mountain giants, who ruled all the world at my birth. Oh the smallfolk have stolen my forests, they’ve stolen my rivers and hills. And they’ve built a great wall through my valleys, and fished all the fish from my rills. In stone halls they burn their great fires, in stone halls they forge their sharp spears. Whilst I walk alone in the mountains, with no true companion but tears. They hunt me with dogs in the daylight, they hunt me with torches by night. For these men who are small can never stand tall, whilst giants still walk in the light. Oooooooh, I am the LAST of the giants, so learn well the words of my song. For when I am gone the singing will fade, and the silence shall last long and long. At least we still have Wun Wun!

I'm glad Pudgey recognises that Jon was broken at the end there! He, at the end of the episode, essentially stops feeling and just pushes through. He doesn't have regard for his own self. He's tired. This is the episode where he really pushes himself, shines, and becomes a leader, but also where he lost a lot, his two closest friends, his lover, and so many of his brothers. He's willing to go out on his own without weapons to Wildling/Free Folk terrority to try to end the bloodshed and save his brothers, but he also just doesn't care what happens to him. It's a sad thing to see Jon go through because just a season ago, he did have so much light when he was with Ygritte

@@jshirlee yeah exactly. His Stark family has been taken from him, most of his Watch family has been as well, even that little bit of family with the Free Folk. He really is just broken and just seems extremely numb at the end of the episode, which is the only way he can keep putting one foot in front of the other. He can't process or breakdown, he just keeps going. I think a lot of people regard this episode as the great rise of Jon Snow and the man he is meant to become, but it is also his great tragedy

Regarding Jorah, for me Dany's decision to banish him is actually makes the most sense & the right call, instinctively. We as audience saw everything from the side lines, that's how we got to see Jorah quickly turned then wholeheartedly devoted to her. We had an idea when, how, and why. But not for her. She never had doubts on him, and she didn't know how it all happened. I could only imagine how heart breaking & frightening it was finding out someone so dear to you was a spy at one point and you had no inkling at all. It makes you question which were genuine and which weren't. As a leader, that was a huge red flag coming from your most trusted advisor.

I know it doesn't translate well into the big screen, with the actors being somewhat similar ages and all that. Maester Aemon is actually meant to be 100 whilst Olenna is only in her early 70s. They might have changed the ages for the show but Aemon is still pretty much ancient, and too old to have fallen in love with Olenna. But, interestingly enough, his nephew was once betrothed to Olenna, but it didn't work out.

@@doommonger7784 I just checked A Wiki of Ice and Fire, and for a frame of reference, Aemon was born in 198 AC and would have been 100 years old when Robert Baratheon died. Lady Olenna was born in 228 AC and would have been around 70 years old when Robert died. Tywin was born in 242 and would have been 56 when Robert died. Aegon V was crowned King in 233, and Aemon joined the watch around the same time so he couldn't be pitted against Egg. That means Aemon joined the Watch when Olenna was 5 years old. @@boppityboopy114 Nah...When Aemon was a boy, there were so many male Targaryens in the kingdom (I think he was the 3rd or 4th son of Maeker and Maeker was the 4th son of King Daeron II) that King Daeron was starting to worry about what to do with them all. He sent Aemon to the Citadel at like age 8 or 9. And the Citadel has its own set of vows. When many of the Targs died in either the Great Spring Sickness and the Blackfyre Rebellions, his father became King. And then when Aemon's 2 older brothers died, it basically came down to Aemon (who had sworn vows to the Citadel) and his younger brother Aegon "Egg," who was unpopular in the court for serving as squire to Ser Duncan the Tall, who came from nothing. Aemon didn't want the Throne, and he didn't want to be pitted against Egg - even unintentionally - so he joined the Watch to have a double vow to keep him from being king.

We spend all this time feeling bad for Olly only for him to break Jon's heart, that smug head nod and all. I didn't want Ygritte to die, but I couldn't really take my frustration out on the boy killing her either. Given what the Wildlings did to his family. That's the beauty of the ethical quandary. Like Ser Alliser. All this time you can't stand him but then during the battle he rallies the troops with an inspiring speech and shows exemplary courage. The Night's Watch successfully repelled the attack but we're still left with a lingering sadness seeing Jon hurting. It's a W but does it really feel like a W tho? There is some book backstory on Ser Allister He was a true knight and loyal to Targaryen. So he was sent to the wall after Robert + Nedd won the war and placed Robert on the throne. Ser Allister had some huge grudge against Stark´s for helping big time in taking Targaryen´s down. Which kind of explains why he felt like he wanted to be Jon´s enemy. All in all its a shame because Ser Allister was a true loyal knight. Shame that he had to have that grudge towards Jon. In a better world, they would have been a hell of a team together and Ser Allister would have been very happy to have Jon on his ranks and work with him because he could clearly see Jon´s skills blossoming. It likely made it worst because in his mind he was watching another Stark growing strong and it triggered him.

This episode is so well made. The aerial shot of the battle showing Jon fighting in the courtyard before panning over to Ygritte is awesome. This is an unpopular opinion but I like Alliser Thorne. He's not got the most colourful personality but he takes his duty to the nights watch seriously. He treats the nights watch recruits harshly because the reality of battle is harsh and brutal. That's the kind of guy you want leading you in a life or death battle, not a friend.

For me, Ygritte's death is the saddest death in the whole show. I may be in the minority with that but I loved her character so much. Things like the Red Wedding and Ned left me too shocked to feel sad really but they leaned into the emotions with Ygritte. It's a classic Romeo and Juliet story with lovers being on the wrong side of a conflict ending in tragedy.

We can see in this episode how Jon is learning and improving as a fighter. He was well trained already but he lost to Karl at Craster's Keep because Karl spit in his eye to get the advantage and mocked Jon for being too honourable to do something like that and in this episode we see Jon spit in the Thenn's eye to get the advantage, he's not fighting as honourably as he was before.

I love how they set up the "Ygritte will save Jon" trope only to subvert it by having Jon kill the Thenn himself using Karl Tanner's blood spitting tactic from earlier in the season. It's like that one time when Jaime made his very predictable escape only to be caught 5 mins later. How about that "I won't die" goodbye kiss from Sam to Gillie before the battle? And then hereally lives lmao. These little tweaks is what makes the episode even better than it already is. Honestly the moral gray area of Olly being the one to kill Ygritte in the show is a stroke of brilliance.

Torturing hundreds of people to death, many of whom are innocent, is what makes Dany cruel. Exiling Jorah is perfectly reasonable in the circumstances. The problem is that she needs advisors and she has precious few. But even if Jorah does give good advice, it's reasonable that she doesn't trust him. That said, it's notable she was able to forgive his past as a slave trader when she thought he was loyal to her.

whichever people in their mods doing slavery apologia need to stop honestly. they were slavers at the end of the day, who owned entire human beings & were complacent within the system even after the crucifixion of the children. there are many things in dany's leadership that are worthy of critique but serving justice to the masters for what they did to 163 children (and for practicing slavery in the first place) is not one of them. i'm shocked at how much slavery apologia there is in this fandom in 2023, it's disappointing.

It's really in everyone's best interest that they get beyond the wall as they will only end up the NIght King's army if they don't and the rest of Westeros will have to fight them then. I think it just hits harder when members of the Night's Watch die because the audience is following their story. If we were follwong the story of the Wildings we'd probably hate the Night's Watch lol.

Jon spitting in Styr's (the thenn's) eyes is a call back to a few episodes ago when he fought Karl at Craster's Keep and was told he shouldn't fight with honor as often

Your burning hatred of Cersei Lannister, like my wife did, is really a testament to the talent of Lena Headey. Her acting ability is on another level. She plays Cersei as a villain so well that it evokes such strong emotion and reaction. There’s so many great actors and actresses in GoT, but she delivers better than almost all others. Diana Rigg’s portrayal of Olenna “Queen of Thorns” Tyrell is also up there.

Watching these reactions to GOT has been so good. Its been so long since I've seen these episodes and its refreshing my memory. Also I really appreciate Pudgey's keen eye to detail. She see's and remembers things that even I forgot.

Has anyone else realized that the reason Mance set the forest on fire behind them was to keep the dead from getting through the wall?

17:45 love how spartan keeps catching himself and reminding himself that he probably won't be ready for whatever happens. Poor guy learnt that the bad way
