Meli Andrade I don’t think that’s the case cause he is loyal to a fault and still wearing black. If he turned his cloak I’d agree, but I ignored all that and crowned him king beyond the wall in my head lol. I just so badly wanted more for Jon

I read it as Jon basically becoming a Wildling, if not King of the Wildings. His punishment was to stay at Castle Black and reform the Night's Watch, not to take off north with the Wildlings. What could anyone do to stop him? The Wildlings certainly aren't going hand him over if anyone comes looking.

Still get to range and see the FreeFolk. Do what he's doing now, get them settled back in t their home. Be Benjen and visit Winterfell, as he did. Be a part of the Stark family.

This is what I thought. It was clear on arrival that there were only three in black, the rest were wildlings. There is no Night's Watch anymore. Three out of four Starks ascend to rule.

@@jsmith1214 He's the shield that guards the realms of men. That includes north of the wall now. And its only included because Jon was the first lord commander in many thousands of years to recognize that the free folk weren't the real threat. His actions saved every one of those wildlings' lives. He saved their entire culture from extinction. Ygritte's culture. I think he's simply leading the night's watch in the way it was meant to be lead. To protect people.

I don’t think he is Lord Commander, because the nights watch is no longer needed. All the men of the nights watch are gone. Only Wildlings left there. He went to live with the Wildlings. He always seemed more at home with them anyway.

Mostly agree but I dont think he'll be King. More like a revered elder. He's never wanted to rule. And I dont think he was escorting the Free Folk north...they were escorting him. Plus why were so many Free Folk jamming up Castle Black anyway? They had plenty of time after the Winterfell battle to move north. I believe they were there to meet Jon and take him where he belonged.

He is not Lord Commander! They shot this so clearly they were spoon feeding and some people still do not get it! Jon walking through the Wildlings as they part for him absolutely mirrors Sansa’s coronation scene! He is the leader of the freefolk now. He is in essence their King and leading them. They shot this VERY specifically.

Chris Piper - Jon sent Ghost with Tormund before leaving for KL, which tells me he had every intention of ending up there regardless of his bloodline. But until I read your account of his last scenes of the series I was kind of confused about what all was going on. I think you are exactly right. Thank you for sharing your insight.

dragon slayer Yes, the first of which has already begun filming, set to air as early as next year. Martin wrote several novellas in recent years (compiled into “A Knight of the Severn Kingdoms”) which provide plenty of material/history/lore for prequels. :)

He's the King Beyond the Wall pretty obviously. Yes, he's still wearing his NW clothes, but how he looked back at the closing gate and disappeared from view tells a different story. They juxtaposed his walking through a crowd of freefolk with Sansa doing the same in the North. They follow him as Tormund said. He's not leaving them.

I think the wall door closing is literally that for Jon. He's not going back. That world, including Castle Black, the "oath" that he didn't actually make is gone for him. He'll lead a long & happy life North of the wall.

I would like to think that Bran pardoned Jon at Sansa’s request so Jon went with his peeps to the real north. Don’t forget that Stannis offered to relieve Jon of his vows so he could become Lord of Winterfell so this shouldn’t be a problem. Jon served both the North and the Realm so he is deserving of more than just punishment. What would be the justice in that.

I don't think it matters, what would the Unsullied even do if they ever found out Jon left with the free folk? March their army through the now Independent North Kingdom where Sansa rules? How many unsullied are even left, would they even be a threat to anyone?

Jon's vows held him until death. He died. Oaths fulfilled. We never saw him renew those vows. Until shown otherwise, I believe Jon is free. Free to father children, marry, hold land and titles, etc. The song of ice and fire will have many refrains, as Targaryen blood mingles with that of the free folk.

It looks like Jon might end up King- Beyond-the-Wall, like Mance Rayder was. Mance used to be a night’s watchman just like Jon and after he was killed, Jon was the one to unite and lead the wildlings. Mance brought them south, Jon will take them back north of the wall.

They couldn't get to Jon and gang when they were in the middle of the frozen lake. They also say as much during the meeting in the dragon pit. So how did they get the chains around Viserion to pull him out of the same lake they couldn't cross to get a Jon Snow?????

Yeah, I think there is no Night's Watch. It seems like it was just a ploy to send Jon where he belonged. He got there and it was just the Wildlings waiting for him, no Night's Watch to be seen. Tormund knew that Jon, like Ghost, belonged in the north.

Maybe he is to become the next whitewalker King. Because in the first episode, Ned says that there hasn't been any whitewalkers for thousands of years. Maybe in a thousand or so years time from then, he will bring a army back to the wall. When winter comes again and the cycle continues.

yeah I'm pretty sure, when Jon stood on the stage at Castle Black, looked down, all his saw were free folk, and he smiled, as he knew that there isn't a Nights Watch to lead, so he came down to ground level to walk among them, not lead them. The way he turns to watch the gate closing, is pretty symbolic to me that he's not planning on returning. It's a chapter of his life ending. He's got the real north in him, and is most certainly at peace, being away from what he has endured the last few years of his life. I cannot wait for the genius writing of GRRM to fully visualize the picture properly in my brain.

I think a lot of people are making Jon Snow's ending out to be a lot more complicated but it really was, King beyond the wall and you can see the frozen north is thawing. He is neither a stark nor Targaryen he is his own person with his own people in his own land...the end.

Try going under the impression that the iron throne is the manifestation of the long night. The Same way the Walkers were during the first long night. Remeber the azor ahai prophecy is not literal. Ie light bringer is the tool that comes from killing the love and ends the long night it's not necessarily going to be a blade thats on fire.

Yasi Soufi in history, “true heir” didn’t always count for much. Even in the books’ history, it wasn’t always as simple as “eldest son inherits”. But maybe Varys didn’t get to send letters off? Maybe the realm doesn’t know Jon Snow is really Aegon Targaryen? Or maybe being sentenced to the Night’s Watch renouncing all titles and claims makes that irrelevant, as it did for Maester Aemon. 😉

I think that's part of his "punishment" in being sent to the Night's Watch (regardless of whether he's really a member or just peaces out with the wildlings); he's not eligible to be king anymore, so he's no longer the "rightful" heir.

If you were Jon what would you want? I would want to be free of all the obligations and duties he had to tolerate as "King of the North", a Stark in reputation, a survivor of death, a Queens consort, a leader of men in battle, etc. He told Tormund before he left Winterfell after Tormund told him he was going north "I wish I could join you." Thus, Jon got his wish. In that frame as he is walking amongst the Wildings what did you see? I hope the follow up movie they make in 2-5 years covers his story.

A couple things: 1: the Night’s Watch still exists, there are black brothers around during the last couple scenes. If not, who the hell closed the gate behind Jon, Tormund and the free folk? 2: I agree Jon is most likely leaving the Watch to live amongst the Free Folk, despite how incompatible that seems with his sense of honour. Remember, he left the wall in S6 because he had died, so his vows were finished. He’s now been sent back as a punishment, he would’ve had to say the vow again, so he’d be a deserter if he just left. I assume the books will explain why Jon doesn’t stay at the wall. Maybe it’s supposed to be that Jon is done with doing his duty at all costs now that he’s killed Daenerys, and knows they’ll only mount very half-hearted attempts to find him, so he’s doing what he wants for once? 3. I would agree with the “magic is leaving Westeros” thing if they hadn’t just appointed Bran as the king. I know, the greenseers were always there, even when other magic wasn’t, but c’mon, the king is now an ultra powerful greenseer with super warging skills; if that isn’t magic, what is?

The poetry and messages that a story conveys usually are not seen on the surface, but the viewer/reader must take the time to carefully ponder the important themes that also touch on the reality of our lives. I understand people's criticism of this season and its ending, but the well thought out character arcs are all there if only we spend the time considering them.

Lissa Downie the explanation I’ve heard, that makes sense for me, is that these patterns were of religious/symbolic importance to the children of the forest, so displaying dead body parts in those patterns was a way of profaning their beliefs. In a modern-day version, when someone makes a crucifix scene painted with human feces, it’s making an anti-Christian statement.

Saying it does not equal he is right. Numbers say it all. At least 50% of tha fandom deemed finale unworthy. Not mentioning that imdb score and pretending its all good ruined my faith in NR a bit. Alt shifts videos rang more true. Best critic channels ie Jeremy and Chris S. Also said season was rushed. For me, that means that inteligent and invested viewer felt insulted the most. Bit hay...we stupid.

It almost feels like the end of the Starks bloodline . Bran can’t have kids, Jon is forbidden, Arya doesn’t want that life, and Sansa most likely won’t with all she’s been through.

Of course it's the end of the Starks, one of the episode was even called "the last of the Stark". And that's fine! The true purpose of the Starks has always been related to the white walkers, now that they are gone, the House can rest too. Same with the Targaryen. Both Houses belong to the past.

Jon leaves with FreeFolk and does not return to Westeros, Tormund tells him in chapter 4. Jon and Ghost belong to the true North.

You forgot to mention the best part of the alternate ending, where Tormond and Jon end up seeing the spiral symbols again played out for them on the ground, showing that there are still white walkers left out in the far North. I personally wished they kept that in the actual ending, it would of kept the ratings just a little bit higher than what they were previously.

Loved the burn at the end. Very true. It's people who can't think critically or have any semblance of a memory that are the most upset. The only valid criticism for me is the length of the season. To flesh things out more. Other than that, it's good for me.
