I absolutely love seeing the one continuous crane shot around the Castle Black courtyard when everyone is fighting. Never gets old and it's amazing. Took the crew around 7 tries to get the scene just right!

This episode pulls off the drama and tension of the show in a way that the remainder of the series sadly fails to. There are so many characters on both sides of the conflict who are worth caring about, and pretty much anything could happen to any of them at any time. No contrivance. No plot armor. Every second matters. There aren't many times in television or film where they get it this right.

This is the last real highlight of the show. There's good moments later on, sure, but the consistency gets spotty and oh boy I'll be so sad once we reach the end of this season.

I'm inclined to disagree, Hardhome does it just as well if not better. And then of course the battle of the bastards. Probably both better episodes in terms of drama and tension than this one is. However, the overall seasons are much lower quality.

@@braxtonmims4223 i personally disagree on hardhome and battle of the bastards being better but whats more egregious is saying that those two are better EPISODES, even in the rare moments in the later seasons where something cool happens the rest of the episode is still shit (ex. winds of winter) i think hardhome is cool but still not close to the battle for the wall and honestly has next to no emotional weight, i dont see any point in attempting to debate why the battle of the bastards suck (except looking cool) because theres many people whove done that better

LMAO I don't blame any of you one bit. I was 13 years old when I read the book, back in 1997. Oberyn was my favorite character, finally someone came to bring justice to this awful world. They took Ned from me, but here comes the coolest guy in Westeros to make it all right.... and then.... ugh. Gutted. I'm just so glad that it began Pedro's star rising in Hollywood.

Nah because I totally understand the feeling after witnessing oberyn's death. It fucked me up so bad that even after 6 years since the first time I've watched game of thrones, every time i rewatch and that scene was about to be shown, i don't even bother watching it anymore and just straight up skipped it. I've only seen it once but even to this day, it's still very vivid in my eyes 😭😂

9:34 you light your arrows on fire, so you can see where you are hitting, also its night so doubly so. Legit Medieval tactic, its like tracer rounds we use today. If hunting is your main way to get food, you get good with a bow or die, she's not just good for no reason. Also they are viking-like so they are use to fighting all the time in the north.

Ghost needs to be more involved. RIGHT?!! Truer words have never been spoken. They completely underused the dire wolves. I think because it was an expensive special effect. And I think using them less means the special effect is slightly easier to pull off because people are happy to see them and not really putting a magnifying glass on it looking for mistakes.

9:34 Underrated Observation Why would they light their arrow on fire. Wouldn't the wildlings see them coming if they're lit. Or is for the archer to actually see where his shot is traveling to. This episode is the second most watched episode in my list. there are so many scene in this episode that i love. one of them is Sam and Maester Aemon's conv. that was the most romantic scene for me. the scene where they show us the biggest fire in the north was just epic and the score was even better. the death of yegritte was great too. their last conversation was one of my favorite.

I always thought the whole 100 thousand vs 100 was a falacy because most of those 100 thousand are outside of the wall and it's near impossible to breach. The main Wildling force was with Tormund and Ygritte were on the other side and that's who the Night's Watch faced basically.

Kind of. The ones on the other side of the wall posed enough of a threat to pull a lot of men and resources away from the battle at the rear, so although they weren't an immediate direct threat, they had the same effect on the battle.

Mances "army" is almost entirely unarmed and unarmored people with no skill in combat. The people he sent here were his most skilled combatants. Could he overwhelm them with numbers? Of course, but it would needlessly cost thousands of lives. And as a good leader you shouldn't needlessly kill a bunch of people.

The only reason they light arrows on fire is for visibility for filming otherwise we wouldn’t see them.
