The worst thing about this scene is not that he died but hearing a proud and confident man like him screaming helplessly getting his head crushed while the Mountain giving his confession how he killed his sister the same way.

Always loved how impressed Jamie was with Oberyn. It really puts into perspective how good he was.

Moral of the story, don’t take your eyes off the mountain or the mountain will take the eyes off you

In my opinion, this is the most unexpected and shocking scene in the entire show.

My favourite part of this whole duel is that there are no stuntmen or doubles. Pedro Pascal actually learned wushu just to act Oberyn's moves and attacks. The man is hands down one of my favourite actors.

I like how even Jaime is legitimately surprised and impressed at how good Oberyn is.

Every time I watch this episode I have feeling that he will survive this time.

When Tywin does that hand gesture saying essentially “Let’s get on with it” during Pycelle’s doddering, tedious speech and he shuffles away kills me every time.

I love the fact that his next big hit is a show where he almost never takes his indestructible helmet off.

Just realized the moment he lost was when he actually looked up in excitement and locked eyes with his wife. Even circling around the Mountain he was keeping his eyes on him. That one split second of “look, we’re finally here, my sister will be avenged” was all it took for his life to slip away. So tragic

Mountain literally taught the meaning of Never let your guard down in a fight to the whole audience.

As brutal and tragic as Oberyn's death is , he did *win* in the end. In the books The Mountain admits to his crimes for all to hear, making Tywin look *really barbaric* , and dies a *very slow* and *very agonising* death due to the sheer amount of poison in his system. And in the show, he arguibly got it worse. He's basically a zombie, a shadow if what he used to be, a slave with minimal consciusness who's only function is to kill anyone he's ordered to. All the while likely suffering from the fact that his body is technically dead, kept alive by what we can only assume to be a mix of magic and alchemy.

After all these years, this is the most heartbreaking and brutal death...I still watch it, screaming in my head " step back, just kill him!"

I love how Jaime is watching the fight and just looks around like "WTF?!" Oberyn was a great character and died too quickly.

And this, gentleman, is why, no matter what you’re mad about, you skip the sentimental shit and send your enemy to the afterlife as soon as you have the chance

No red wedding, no purple wedding, no jon snow's death. This was the most shocking piece of all for me. The swirl of emotions, I can't even tell.

Tywin is still the coldest dude in the GoT universe, was like, "oh, he's dead, anyways, CAN SOMEBODY KILL MY SHORT SON?"

For a character who didn't have too many roles in GoT, he really stole my heart. He was definitely one of my favorite characters from GoT. After this, I couldn't wait to see Pedro Pascal acting in other roles. Now I'm watching The Last of Us and I absolutely love him in that show too. He's a phenomenal actor, such a hidden gem doing small roles his whole career and after GoT he really flourished. Can't wait to see him in movies in the future as well.

One of the best scenes in the show. I still return here to watch it and get chills as he points at Tywin screaming "say her name!".

Ironically, he actually killed the mountain. The poison from his spear eventually forced him to become the undead zombie we see later on.

Oberyn's screams are so haunting. People have screamed in agony a lot in the show but the fact we know how strong he is, how competent and righteous he is makes the contrast of him screaming and thrashing uselessly so much greater.

Oberyn is my favorite character from this show. He was a free spirited person, full of passion and love. He had a massive sense of justice and morality combined with confidence and certainty. Sadly his strong desire for revenge made him reckless. One of the saddest deaths for sure.

I know it's sort of a side-point for how good this scene is on all levels, but holy shit the editing is amazing. Whoever cut this together was at the top of their game. Just look at how strategically it moves our attention from the fighters to the onlookers like Tyrion, Jaime, Cersei, Elaria, and Tywin - insanely well-cut fight scene. I'm sure the editor(s) put a lot of thought and work into how to bring this across, and it paid off.

keep in mind not many in the seven kingdoms could go 1v1 against The Mountain. If he wasn`t blinded by anger and desire for revenge he it was as easy as walk in the park for Oberyn.

Ironically, the Viper had a classic “bad guy” death, talking and gloating when he should have finished off his opponent.

The anger and Rage coming from Oberyn and the acting from Pedro is so spectacular in this scene, you really see him just let it all out, unfortunately though, this is Game of Thrones.

The part that still sticks out to me the most is after seeing the Mountain get speared through the chest and Oberyn get his teeth knocked out, his eyeballs smushed, and his head explode.. Tywin Lannister calmly stood up and announced the sentencing - none of that fazed him even the slightest. One of the great characters and character portrayals ever

8 years later and I still can't finish watching this scene in its entirety.

This scene is the best scene in the series for me Starting with a surprise when Tyrion chooses trial by combat, then his sister Gregor Clegane presents Joffrey's supporter. Oberyn chooses to be Tyrion's supporter, and Oberyn's skills are amazing.I have never seen anyone fight with a spear like Oberyn 👏👏👏

Oberyn was only for 1 season but this character touched our heart

I watched this season on a weekly basis. A week felt so long so I did a bad thing and went on the internet and spoiled myself. While watching this episode I knew Oberyn was gonna die. This scene was so beautifully choreographed that I was still shocked that he died.

One of the few scenes I ever had to read again in a book to make sure I didn’t read it incorrectly.

Everytime I come to watch this scene, I find it hard to watch Oberyn's death. Every time.

Damn he loved his sister, niece and nephew so much all that anger blinded him when he finally had their killer..so sad he got careless last second. He was level headed enough to win easily but got more emotional as the fight went on which caused his death. Gives me goose bumps every time

It's nice to be reminded of the transcendent moments like this that GoT was capable of. Makes that last season or two all the more frustrating.

Moral of the story- Don't monologue. END the threat. Then brag about it....

People don't understand that Oberyn wasn't just looking to win. He needed the Mountain to confess and say that it was Tywin that gave him the order. That way he could then avenge his sisters death. Just killing the Mountain would mean he would never get the confirmation of his suspicions. Since Tywin is the only other one that knew that he gave the order.

I will never forget how I felt when I watched this for the first time. Waiting till next Sunday with the complete shock and horror of what happened

Not sure if this was deliberate but when Gregor does confess, he alters the order of the atrocities he did. Oberyn kept saying Gregor raped and killed Elia then he killed the children after, Gregor corrects him saying he killed the children first. This is terrifying when you realise Elia went through such an awful experience while having her children's deaths on her mind.

One of the best fight scenes I have ever seen. So much drama and tension, this is peak GoT. The watchers on the wall following this episode is probably my favorite of the entire series

In his recent Hot Ones interview Pedro Pascal talks about this scene and how it felt having his head crushed in like that, and I can't help but think of it rewatching this now. It was so hot while they filmed, and he had to be perfectly still. They poured a bucket of film blood-goop and viscera all over his face, but it was so cool compared to the hot air he said it was very soothing and he fell into the deepest and most relaxing sleep he's ever experienced.

It's her scream and look of pure horror on her face. Gets me every time.

I loved oberyn. He was kind, honorable, and a great father and person. He was extremely intelligent and was an incredible fighter. Sadly, in the GoT world, those qualities only ensure one’s death. I was very sad when I saw his fate (and horrified) but mostly due to not being able to see him on screen anymore… and the whole skull being crushed thing.

I remember watching this when it first aired, and it was the first time the death of a character genuinely left me nauseated and feeling completely off balance. To see righteous judgement moments from fruition, only for the wicked to prevail all the same, it hurts the spirit.

This is one of the best set pieces in all of TV, let alone GOT. The way it drags you from surprising and energising triumph to sickening disaster is masterfully done, and it still shocks every time. A perfect synergy of action and emotion.

I would like to believe that George R.R. Martin took inspiration from Lu Bu when creating Oberyn as the Red Viper. Obviously he is not _completely_ alike to him, but the way they both handle the spear with elegance and precision is truly something to behold.

Everytime I come to watch this I'm always dreading what I know is going to happen hoping that it will be different this time.

After all this years. I'm still frustated that Oberyn lost.

This was beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the most horrific death scenes of the show. With that being said, the little Baratheon girl being burned alive has to be second. Hearing her screaming while being roasted is not easily foregettable

Pedro pascal is such a good actor really made us feel oberyns pain and everyone's heart sank as soon as the mountain got his hands on him, brilliant scene but also a terrible one all at the same time

Seeing this on TV was absolutely insane. At first, you think "Oberyn's acting too cocky, he's gonna die." Then the fight happens, and the whole time you're more and more certain that Oberyn's going to pull it off. Oberyn wins the fight, mortally wounding Clegane. Jaime smiling down at Tyrion confirms it; The Red Viper has bested The Mountain in single combat. Then as Oberyn taunts Clegane, the viewers expression follows Tyrion's; not uncertainty about the result, but more a growing sense of urgency. In a split-second, Oberyn is on his back, and the Mountain grabs him. His teeth are punched out, but for a second you still cling to that feeling that Oberyn will pull out the victory, how could they kill Tyrion? Even as you watch the Mountain's fingers puncture Oberyn's eyes, it doesn't feel real. I remember thinking in that moment, "Oberyn's gonna pull a dagger, they're just changing his character, he's gonna survive..." *SMASH* Oberyn's skull explodes, and there's no question; Oberyn is dead and Tyrion will die too. The feeling after this episode was so gut-wrenching.

One of the best scenes in the entire show, and by far the best fight/dual. I also loved watching Jamie's expressions. He was genuinely impressed and having a great time watching Oberyn fight, and kick the Mountain's butt. And the distress in his face when the fight was over was quite noticeable.

One of the single most disturbingly brutal scenes in television history...hands down.

I love how after such an intense moment Tywin stands up and very casually says “the Gods have made their will known”

What I like about this scene is the fact, that Oberyn unlike the others isn't even intimidated by the Mountain and is fearless, his agility and skill with the spear is amazing. Pedro Pascal nailed it as Oberyn, I was mad too, how he left his guard open and died, but he left a scar on the Mountain and the Mountain did confess to the stuff Oberyn wanted him to confess about Infront of everyone, so in a way Oberyn did win.

The editing is fantastic.. the emotions running wild from the highest to the lows. I remember watching this for the first time.. my God what a shock.. and loved every minute of it.

It's 2024 and I am watching this fight again, safe to say that it's my favorite fight in the whole series, apart from Oberyn's death and it's also interesting to observe Jaime, he is legitimately so happy when he thinks Oberyn won, he can barely contain himself.

Tywin is just as much a monster as The Mountain. The fact he could watch all that transpired and not even flinch. And the fact he gave Gregor the order to kill Elia Martell and her children just shows much a monster he is too.

Red wedding and Oberyn's eye crushing death are by far the MOST SHOCKING scenes in the history of TV.

The most impactful part of this fight for me is when mountain punches him and his teeth go skittering across the floor. Absolute chills.

I remember perfectly how I reacted to this like 6 years ago… It was sooo awesome to see the Viper dominate the Mountain and outmaneuver him with ease. But the second oberyn didn’t kill him immediately, but wanted him to confess, I felt uneasy. I’m such a calm person, but when he got grabbed, I had to smash my fists on the table in anger and disbelief :D

I forget if she says it in the books but the simple line "don't leave me alone in this world" absolutely kills me...so, so good...
