Yeah took me a while to realise that, as I've seen a few Gwendoline Christie interviews and Comic Con appearances, but it did strike me when someone mentioned it that it is indeed the first time we have ever seen the character smile in the show. It was great too as it occurred amongst friends who all had respect for her and genuinely pleased after all the mockery she has received throughout her life

Great observations, as always. And best read on Dany and her point of view. There's been a lot of knee jerk "She's the Mad Queen!" reaction to the handling of her arc this season. Nice to have a smart person see through all that nonsense. Sansa has been snarky with her from day one. Jon is the one who bent the knee, so her quarrel is with him. The writers have done a good job of isolating Dany this season. It's time for Dany and Missandei to have another hair braiding scene lol

I think the lines in Sam's scene hit a sore spot with Arya. He says with death you're no one and that is what Arya was taught being a faceless man. Watch her face in that scene.

I have reached my saturation point with the never-ending talk about how bad the writing is on the show now. I am glad to hear someone point out ways in which it is actually quite good. I am not arguing that no pacing and character depth has been lost since the show out-ran the books, and since early in season 7 it has been a lot of fan-service - but fan service is not a bad a thing, especially when its earned by 6 seasons of torture, and the former is more of a time/logistical issue than it is a writing one. I will miss these videos when the show comes to an end - almost as much as I will miss the show. I find myself a bit bothered by your assessment of the Jon and Dany scene. As a guy who successfully messed up relationships for two decades, I have managed to learn a few things. The most common malfunction or miscommunication between males and females is this exact thing. You say Jon should know to tell her he wont take her crown, but I know that for a guy like Jon, not only would he never consider doing so and thus needing to state that would never occur to him, but he has also proven that to her already - he was not even willing to lie to Cerci ffs. I fully understand and appreciate that women need to be told certain things, but I think it is worth mentioning that women need to start understanding that men believe in the intimacy of showing rather than telling. In my opinion, the expectation on him to say "i wont take your throne out from under you", is not only expecting him to state what he would consider to be "the obvious", but its also a little insulting to his character. Thus, for you to blame his failure to tell her what you believe he should tell her on his "slow mind" (which I know was at least partly just a reference), is a cheap shot, imo. It is not that he is too obtuse or self-centered to say it - it is that he literally can not imagine that she would need to be told that, because in his mind she would know that. Im not saying either side is "right". But I am saying that, as with most relationship malfunctions, no one is "wrong". We are simply not seeing things the same.

@dragon-ed1hz
@dragon-ed1hz 5 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people have misread that scene. Most commonly people seem to say that Dany is jealous that Sansa can inspire loyalty. I disagree, Dany can obviously inspire loyalty. What Dany is longing for is the family that she never had. She has no brother or sister or half-brother or foster brother to turn to. No nostalgia from a happy childhood. No lifelong friend or companion. No memory of parents who loved her. Dany is, and pretty much always has been, on her own. Jorah is the closest she has to family.
@pietrayday9915
@pietrayday9915 5 жыл бұрын
@@dragon-ed1hz I think you're right, and I think this series has subtly emphasized and foreshadowed that difference between Sansa and Dany in a couple places as well, such as the episode where the Starks work together to undo Littlefinger, and where Arya reminds Jon to remember that he's family, and Theon's story arc in which he's reminded that he is more stark than he ever was a Greyjoy, and even as far back as when Ned Stark told Arya that "the lone wolf dies, the pack survives". Even Tywin Lannister, after a fashion, tried to drill a similar lesson into his children, though his family ultimately fell apart at the seams because of its dysfunctions, including Tywin's own problems. Dany has succeeded in spite of never having a family to fall back on so far, but she's been the "lone wolf" up until now, and has shown little sign of that ever changing. As you said, her advisors and followers were the closest thing she had to family, but she'd banished Jorah twice for making mistakes, beheaded her most loyal followers when they made mistakes, threatens Tyrion for his mistakes, has spent more time ignoring the advice of everyone else more often than she listens to it, and she hasn't had a stable romance since Drogo died (and even that relationship, though it had grown over time into a marriage based on mutual respect, had a nightmarish start and finish!) Being unforgiving to her "family", being unwilling to "bend the knee" in loyalty to them, and refusing to trust or rely on them seem to bode ill for her future. If Denaerys doesn't learn something about how to bond with her "pack" fast from the Starks and her other allies, she's going to end alone in tragedy as the sort of "lone wolf" that Ned warned Arya about.
@dragon-ed1hz
@dragon-ed1hz 5 жыл бұрын
@@pietrayday9915 You make some good points, but let's remember a few things: Jorah didn't just make a mistake; he betrayed her. Took awhile and a lot of effort and suffering on Theon's part to win back Sansa's and the other Starks' trust after he betrayed them, didn't it? And remember, the second time Dany banishes Jorah, she's following Tyrion's advice. The only loyal follower she beheaded was Mossador, who went directly against her orders by murdering a prisoner in Dany's custody. She was trying to establish the rule of law and to show that it applied to everyone, advice she took from Barristan Selmy. Jon beheaded Slynt because he directly disobeyed an order. As for a "stable romance," I'm not sure how that is of consequence here. Sansa hasn't had one, Arya hasn't had one, and neither has Jon since Ygritte died (if you could ever call that "a stable relationship"). Dany's relationship with Daario was far more stable, even if not built on love on her part. She has certainly trusted Tyrion and he has made mistake after mistake. She is understandably upset with him, yet she does listen to Jorah and stands by Tyrion. She has listened to her advisors far more than anyone else. Jon didn't listen to Sansa before the BotB, did he? Or about giving the Houses to the loyal Northerners. Or about going South. Sansa doesn't listen to Jon when it comes to Dany. Dany has certainly shown loyalty to her advisors many times. That's not the same as having a family, though, is it?

I am not so sure that Jon will actually be uninterested in the Throne. So far, he has never passed on a leadership position, even though he could have. But he took the title of Lord Commander, in that case he probably felt like he had to, because Thorne had very different views. Then he became King in the North, were he could have denied and left the ruling position to Sansa, advocate for her to lead. Again he might just have felt that it was necessary, since he knows what is coming. But overall, I am not sure that he does not want to lead if he thinks he would do a better job. I believe that in part his stance of not wanting any titles might be a defense mechanism since he is a Bastard, or at least thought so. He never really had the option to gain any higher title, best case scenario Knight or something in the Nights Watch. So its easier just to tell yourself you don't want what you can't have anyway. Or its just a normal reaction, since his position was relatively clear to him, so he grew up with the idea of being mostly unimportant. Knowing that he is the legitimate Son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, and the heir to the Throne, might change that. So far, he hasn't once said he did not want the crown, not even to Sam, where he easily could have said something like: "Even if that is true, I don't want the Throne."

Sansa and Theon was like brother and sister to me. Also, all the things I've seen on the show make me think that the Targaryens are the living WWs. They have the pale skin and white/silver hair. The Targaryens have violet eyes instead of blue because they have warm blood flowing through their bodies. There's got to be a connection there. Could they, the Targaryens, be the spawn/descendants of the 13th Lord Commander and his pale lady with blue eyes?

I don't know why eveeeerybody in the planet is angry at jon for not telling danny he doesn't want the crown to end that conversation or at least make it easier (or because of his slow mind!).. Did anybody ever thought that he actually might WANT the throne ? I think what Sam told him the last episode stuck with him .. how he woudl'nt have killed Sam's family if he was in charge .. Jon might be thinking that he can be the king that westeros deserves ... So it makes sense he stayed silent when Danny commented on his claim to the throne !
@shockwave1126

Good point. People know this show and the characters aren't black and white. Even if Danny does know Jon may not want the throne, people have been elevating him all his life when he was only a bastard. Who is to say this track record does not continue. Conversely, Jon may decide he'll own this one because he'll be a better ruler or maybe together he breaks the wheel with Dany. The beauty of this show is the different shades of grey.
@TheHigherSpace
@TheHigherSpace 5 жыл бұрын
@@shockwave1126 Even simpler than that, consider the fact that we don't know his motivation or why he didn't want to be king in the north .. maybe because he was a bastard he felt not deserving or felt as an outsider .. but now that he knows he is the legitimate king, that might change what he wants .. we just don't know enough to make any assumptions right now ..

I loved this video! I loved the episode too. I know it was about Brienne becoming a knight but I felt like it was also a nod to Jamie truly becoming a knight of the seven kingdoms. He's been a knight for several years but until he left Cersei and came to winterfell he wasn't complete, I feel like he is now. I believe this was about both of them becoming true Knights. I actually kind of felt like there was a nod to theon and Sandir as well, neither of them are Knights but they too have been on this redemption arc and are finally the embodiment of what a true knight is supposed to be. I thought this the day after I seen this episode and I really would love it if you gave me your take on it.

@BecauseGeekChannel

I understand this feeling for sure. I think there's different ways to interpret their relationship because we didn't really see them growing up so to say that they thought of each other as sibilings is mainly an assumption, unless there's a reference for this in the books that I'm forgetting. But if they were raised as siblings then why did Theon always felt like an outsider, and like he didn't fit in? I think there's something there. He probably wasn't very close to Sansa either and well they never thought of each other as blood relatives so I do think that after they're all grown up they could develop feelings for each other

When they have Dany in the "entitlement" mode, she is not likeable. What she didn't realize that just because she is a Targ isn't going to play out by people bowing to her due to her lineage. It's like what was said to her brother, she actually expects people do so even though she called that out last season. Dany is too self-absorbed.

Sadly her brother's influence was not the greatest on Dany...But she can learn and I expect her to do just that... GRRM said all the clues to the ending are in season 1. I believe that Dany at the end of it...just wants to go 'home' rather than just lead a Kingdom... the battle to come might open her eyes to the simple reality of vanquishing the NK and staying alive... who wants to rule over an army of the dead?

@@deenick8794 Dany leave King's Landing in Winter (the snow falling in the throne room) to go North beyond the wall. Then she find a hut (home) with Khal Drogo (a dragon, a Targaryen, Jon Snow) and her child (she get pregnant). She leave the throne because she doesn't want the throne, she want a home. She always wanted to return to Braavos, to the house with the red door of her childhood. Robert/Ned scene about joining their families -> Arya and Gendry. Gendry being the son of Cersei and Robert (I think he was exchanged with another when sick by Varys, to weaken the succession to the throne for a Targaryen Restoration - but Varys, being Varys, could not kill him).

I have said this before, this was one of my favorite episodes since the end of season 4. WOW just WOW! To see all our beloved characters to come together this way, knowing this could very well be their last night alive. The things that happened, felt natural and most of all, very human. I’ve seen lots of criticism about Arya and Gendry’s love scene. Grow the f#*k up. These characters are adults in both the show and in reality. Arya’s choice was her’s. She took the lead in a world where women aren’t normally allowed to do that. It was totally Arya. Brienne being knighted was truly great. That smile on her face says it all. Theon and Sansa.. I totally agree with you about those two. However, they could never produce an heir but if adoption is allowed in this world it would make total sense. There are going to be a lot of orphans. The scene between Jon and Daenerys bothered me about their relationship. He was telling her something that had to have shaken him to his core and she’s more concerned about him being a male heir with claim to what she’s always considered her’s. She’s still focused on the wrong things. Loved Pod’s singing and the song, the sadness of it is supposed to show the sadness of Summerhall. Ghost was there but that was probably my only real disappointment. There should have been some interaction between him and Jon. Otherwise, it’s an episode that is breaking my heart because I know what’s coming tomorrow night. We’ll lose most of the armies. We’ll lose many of the characters we’ve come to love. I’m not looking forward to seeing some of these characters with bright blue eyes. After it’s all over I do expect life to win out. It always seems to somehow. Even in our own world.

Why on earth does Dany care about the throne at all? It was just taught to her by her crazy as f*** brother whom she hated. Has she never even once questioned if this "The throne belongs to us" is actually complete nonesense? I hope at least this will be adressed in the books.
@pietrayday9915

I think Denaerys herself actually explained that in some dialogue in the show recently, I believe to Sansa when Sansa asked "What about the North?": reaching for the throne is the only thing Dany has known her entire life, it was the only thing that was important to her brother, the only "real" family she'd ever known. There's also an implied parallel to Tyrion and governing: Tyrion seems to have been surprised to find that he liked governing and that it was something he was really good at, and Tyrion was crushed when that was taken away from him by his family; Dany, too, seems to like conquest and to be good at it, and having that taken away from her would almost certainly kill a part of her, too... Dany and Tyrion are characters who had nothing to live for, until they got a tatse of their respective versions of leading, and would have nothing much left to live for should that power be taken away from them. In fact, that parallel could be extended to Sansa, who was raised to be a Lady to some powerful noble or prince and to have his babies, and thought at first that it's all she could do, and all she really wanted. She might have been good at that, and with the right lord would have probably been happy doing it, but that was taken away from her very quickly the moment her father was arrested for treason, through the long series of horrors she endured. In the end, Sansa found that she had other things to live for than her version of power: when all else was gone, what she wanted more than anything was to go home to her family, not to regain any position of power that was "hers by right". Like Sansa, it seems like Dany would have been happy to have been Khal Drogo's husband and to have raised his babies, only to see that taken away from her. One wonders how Dany's story might have been different, if she'd been left with anything other than the Iron Throne to live for?

I love that ser Brienne is now a knight of the seven kingdoms and that its been confirmed that she's a descendant of ser Duncan but something I thought about is how her and podrick's relationship has mirrored dunk and eggs relationship. I'm certain there's nothing more to this than them mirroring but it would be kind of cool if pod was actually Rhaegar's son that may or may not have been switched before the sack of kingslanding. That would only ever be a book thing and I seriously doubt there's any validity to it but it would be cool because it would be almost exactly like "a knight of the seven kingdoms" and an awesome twist. I don't believe it at all but I thought it was an interesting concept.

I think at this point Dany is the most misunderstood character in the show, based on what many "analysts" have said and based on a lot of the comments I've read. Maybe she will become a villain, but that would completely deny the essence of who she has been throughout the entire series. She is the loneliest character in the show ("no family to support her," said Maester Aemon), but she has "a gentle heart." Think about some of the other things people have said about her: Jorah said centuries come and go without a leader like her. Daario said, "My sword is yours, my life is yours, my heart is yours." Varys said she was stronger than Tommen, yet gentler than Stannis. She was a leader who could inspire the people and she had the right family name. Tyrion said he had been a cynic all his life and had never believed in anything, yet he believes in her. Jon said the people of the North will follow her once they know her. Missandei said, "She is the leader we chose." Grey Worm kept his despicable name because of her. Yet many viewers and commentators seem to think she's the second coming of the Mad King. She is exasperated with Sansa when Sansa says "What about the North?" because Dany has already been through that with the "King in the North," Jon, who bent the knee and whom she named Warden of the North. Dany is understandably upset when Jon drops the bombshell that he is Aegon Targaryen and has a claim to the throne that she has worked her whole life to achieve. She has had no chance yet to examine her feelings, process that information, and talk with Jon about how he feels. Dany has always set aside her ambition to serve the people. She freed the "sheep people" in her original Khalessar, she stayed in Meereen to ensure that slavery didn't return, she refrained from attacking King's Landing so she wouldn't destroy thousands of innocent people, and she came north to fight the Night King. She has dragons (which she walked through fire to birth) and the most powerful army in Westeros, and yet people like Sansa (who couldn't even retain the loyalty of the Glovers) want to disrespect her. She has the goal of "breaking the wheel" which has crushed the people on the ground for centuries. It seems to me that Dany, not Jon or anyone else, is best suited to rule Westeros--if it still exists at the end of the show.
@penelope7880
@penelope7880 5 жыл бұрын
She wants to break the wheel yet wants to rule the seven kingdoms. Breaking the wheel would mean getting rid of the Iron Throne yet it’s all she wants. What Varys said could also be applied to Jon. He comes from 2 great houses, is fair and just, and thinks about other before himself. Also, he’s never wanted power yet he inspires loyalty and is chosen to lead. Dany thinks she’s entitled to the throne bc of her name. It’s like Val said the ppl see has a foreign invader who wants to rule over them. As far as “saving the North” Dany didn’t want to save the North last season. She refused to help Jon unless he bent the knee. She was also more worried about Cersei taking back the lands she won in the FOF 2.0 than the NK and his army. She agreed to help after she saw the threat and her dragon was killed. Dany really had no choice to but to help defeat the NK bc then she’d have no kingdoms to rule. Dany isn’t fit to rule bc she’s unstable when it comes to ppl not doing what she wants. She uses her dragons as power. Jon never had to use fear to try to rule others. He’s always tried to get ppl to work together and achieves this by showing them that he’s willing to ‘walk the walk’ per say. Plus if anything Meereen showed us how Dany is an incompetent ruler who refuses to compromise.
@dragon-ed1hz
@dragon-ed1hz 5 жыл бұрын
@@penelope7880 OK, let's take your arguments one at a time. Breaking the wheel does not necessarily mean getting rid of the Iron Throne. Power must be consolidated before it can be redistributed. In other words, if there are kings and queens here and there, the wheel will not be broken; it will simply become a plethora of wheels, as it was in the days before Aegon the Conqueror. Dany agrees to let Yara take back the Iron Islands only if Yara agrees to stop the reaving and raping that the Iron Born have traditionally engaged in. When Dany took over Slaver's Bay, she allowed the people to choose their own rulers, but, one would assume, she would not tolerate rulers who wanted to reinstitute slavery. Dany is concerned with inalienable rights not particular political systems. Jon does indeed have some great qualities, but he has failed as a ruler time and time again. He was unable to unite the Night's Watch and walked into Thorne's trap and was killed. He was unable to rally the Stark bannermen to his side before the Battle of the Bastards, and he led his people into Ramsey's trap because of his own emotional impulsiveness. His beheading of Slynt and his hanging of the conspirators was not an attempt to use fear? A certain amount of ruthlessness seems a necessary ingredient to success in the world of Ice and Fire. Of course Dany uses her dragons as power. The question is, to what end does she use them? As Tyrion said, The question is not whether they are terrible people but if they are the right kind of terrible. Birthright is a key ingredient in this world but not the only one. Sam immediately assumes that Jon should rule because he has a better birthright than Dany. Dany is not a foreign ruler. She was born in Westeros and only left because she would have been murdered otherwise. Jon has little real power. Dany has enormous power with her dragons and her armies. Which of the two could best implement benevolent rule? Power is power, after all. Dany originally didn't want to save the North because Jon's story was fantastical. She originally wanted him to bend the knee because she could not break the wheel unless she owned the wheel. Despite her skepticism, she listened to her advisors (another good trait she has) and not only allowed Jon to mine the dragonglass but provided the manpower and resources for him to do it. As she became more convinced of the truth of Jon's assertions, she condoned the plan to bring back a wight as proof. She then risked her life and the lives of her dragons to save Jon and the men with him. Afterward, she offered to help with no demand for him to bend the knee. Jon chose that action; he was not coerced because he saw who Dany really was. Dany certainly had a choice once she knew the NK was real. She could have packed up her armies and her dragons and gone back to Meereen and let Westeros be overrun. Dany is impatient with people who don't seem to recognize that she is far more powerful than they are. They want to make demands that they have no hope of enforcing. The Northerners originally named Robb King in the North because the dragons were gone and there was no overwhelming force opposing them. Well, the dragons are back. Torrhen Stark was smart enough to bend the knee to save his people from Aegon's dragons. As a result the Starks were wardens of the North for 300 years without interference from the Targaryens. Dany was an inexperienced leader when she took over Meereen, but she learned pretty quickly. She did compromise by reopening the fighting pits, allowing former slaves to sign a one-year contract with their former masters, and marrying the leader of a great house. Ending slavery is not easy. Just look at the U.S. Around 800,000 people died in the Civil War, the South was left in ruins, and the KKK terrorized people for a 100 years after. The repercussions are still being felt today. It caused chaos. Should Lincoln have just left slavery in place for generations to come to avoid turmoil? As Davos suggested, perhaps the best of all possible worlds would be a marriage of the two.

Another reason I think the writing is brilliant this season because we finally see how others perceive Dany not how Dany sees herself. It reminds us this show is about human conflict and the point of view of the characters not ours. So when people defend Dany by reminding me of her journey, my answer to that is nobody cares in this story just like Ned never listened to Jaime and always saw him as a Kingsslayer, just like Thorne never saw the Wildlings as human beings trying to live just like him, just like Dany didn't care about Jaimes redemption and only let him go because she was outnumbered, nor did anyone care about Theons internal conflict and sadness with his identity before he took Winterfell, or that Cersei is Cersei because she has lived nothing but tragedy her entire life, on and on it goes. It all comes down to as Jorah said owning mistakes and earning loyalties not commanding them. Dany has a sad story and so does everyone else. What gives her a pass? And I think this season shows she doesn't. She has to earn her goals just like everyone else.

@pietrayday9915 5 жыл бұрын
They love flipping love and hate, but they also love taking characters that don't know how to figuratively "bend the knee" to a higher power than their ideals and goals, and then either having the characters learn to change, or break - Dany has been acting rather rigid and inflexible, especially where taking the Iron Throne is concerned, and one can't help thinking that she'll prove to be too brittle to carry the responsibility that comes with it; conversations between characters like Varys, Tyrion, and her other advisors when she isn't there seem to have been underlining the fact that they believe they'll need to step in to intervene by finding a way of controlling her in those moments where she isn't wise enough to compromise and control herself (see, for example, the scenes involving Dany burning the Tarlies alive and the fallout from that, and the scene where she beheaded her own supporters in Essos and the fallout for that....) So, I agree entirely that Denaerys will end up being a divisive force in the alliance over the long haul in a "villainous" way, at least unless something happens to give her character a chance to grow in ways that her earlier experiences haven't yet, and if Denaerys should go "dark side", and for thematic reasons that division is not going to bode well for those she takes with her....
