I'm surprised at how dull these stories are getting. Given how the past games had some absolute psychopaths, I was expecting Alex to be up against someone who gave off no aura as they committed something like murder or have a twist where Alex misinterprets a person's emotion because she doesn't have the full picture yet, and the source of that emotion is much more sinister.

How they handled Alex’s ability was the biggest disappointment for me. I like the idea of someone who can read emotions by aura while struggling with the possibility that she could be overwhelmed if she’s not careful. The game could have tried playing with the ability in that Alex can tell people are hiding things from her, but she knows how to offer comfort to give them the space to open up. Maybe play more with the choice between trying to get people to talk to her or actually be able to influence their mood to force a connection. There’s a lot of moral dilemma to play with there. Simply making her telepathic ruins that sort of nuance and goes beyond what an empath actually could do. It’s an easy button that begs the question of why she was made an empath in the game at all. Just make her a telepath and you’d barely need to change anything where character interactions are concerned. Being able to read memories from objects infused with lingering emotions was a cool concept for someone sensitive to emotional vibrations, but it’s so underutilized in the game and out of sync with a telepath.

@jameswest6232

An empath in this universe could work so well as an investigator, maybe someone who tracks down other superpowered people. You could even give interesting limitations on the powers like the seeing auras is a constant thing (making everything a technicolor soup when you're in a crowd) and make the influence part a strength and weakness as doing so makes you vulnerable to being overwhelmed by the other person.

That's the thing that disappointed me. I thought that Alex's ability was gonna be a double-edged sword and we'd have to choose to feel other people's emotions at the risk of losing ourselves but it never shows up again after that first episode. @@crescentblueee To me that wasn't as big of a deal as the inconsistent messages during that whole part. The game treats taking Charottes anger away as a bad prying thing you did that later makes her feel empty, and turn against Alex in the final saying there's something wrong with her making it seem like the message was it's bad to force someone not to feel their natural emotions. And yet taking Pikes fear away isn't treated as being bad at all, and is the only way he has the confidence to be on Alexes side during the final confrontation. So is it bad or not bad to take someones negative emotion away without their permission, game? Stop being wishy-washy.
@loganhasadumptruck3404
@loganhasadumptruck3404 Жыл бұрын
@Sardonicus I think it depends on the person. Charlotte is probably used to feeling her emotions and let's them happen while Pike really doesn't pay much attention to them. So when Char realized she couldn't feel anger, frustration, hatred, it possibly scared her. Maybe she felt like she lost a part of herself? I'm not sure. But people are so different and their responses to something supernatural would be extremely complex.

This is why I was really disappointed with this game. I didn’t want to be following a telepath; that’s a completely different sort of power. To be brutally honest with you, I actually have been through some pretty emotional things in the last few months. And yes. Alex’s reaction is terrifyingly realistic, and so much resonated with me. My response to what happened was that I was simply unable to grieve. Sure I was sad as hell. I was angry. I was scared. And I don’t really know exactly how to explain it. It kinda was just me laying on the floor, listening to feel-good music and realizing that nothing actually feels good anymore. It was being too angry at my dad to even shout. So yes. The biggest sin of this game is the explosions. Typhon wanted to cover up the death of 7 people in their old mine. But when the security gets alerted that a child and 3 people are in the blast radius, they don't call it off because it puts the whole company in jeopardy. But Rhea is in the middle of town and the new blast area as Jed told Alex that. The old mine is closer to town than the old one. This matters because 2 minutes after the call Leanne tells Diane that Haven is her district, and it is her decision, and convinces her to do it anyway. But Rhea is closer to town than the new mine, so it has to be in Diane's jurisdiction, therefore she has the authority to halt both blasts. Another problem with that is if all 4 of them died they would've had more deaths to cover up. It was literally more beneficial for both parties to wait the next day. Another huge sin is how terrible Typhon's lawyers are and also how bad the cops are in Haven. Typhon attempted to use a private investigation firm to keep tabs on Alex and friends, when the investigators have no good reason too, they didn't know Alex was going to steal the USB Drive, therefore no excuse for Alex to commit any crimes for Typhon to start a private investigation. Also, Typhon sent an affidavit to Charlotte, and the only thing Charlotte can press charges for is Child Endangerment since Ethan was in the blast zone, but Charlotte would easily lose since it's her responsibility for Ethan and none of this would've happened if Charlotte had kept a close watch on Ethan. Typhon basically just gives Charlotte free money. They also try to make Alex sign an affidavit after catching her with the stolen USB saying she'll drop everything even though she hasn't even begun a legal investigation or lawsuit. So Typhon just let's Alex get away with computer fraud. The cops don't also immediately request a warrant for the USB recordings when Mac said that there was no call but Ryan claims there was. The recordings that they would find out was on the USB drive, and request and see that there was a call, and also a call telling them to ignore Gabe. They also don't question Ethan, Ryan, or Alex about the incident so they know more. Typhon's terrible lawyers are apparently giving away free money and letting people off federal crimes for free and they still don't get busted by the cops because they're even more terrible at their job.

@Paappa624
@Paappa624 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but there is a flipside to it which this childish game written by 5 alleged humans is completely faceblind to: people who have been abused can range from reactively reading for clues to proactively projecting their fears unto other people to calm themselves down. Children aren't equipped to deal with the stress of having to tiptoe around an abusive home environment for extended periods of time and can get so stuck in anticipating their supposed caretakers shifting emotions that they might never learn how to deal with their own. Such people tend to be neurotic and have an incredibly hard time relaxing around others which saps them of their energy. True Colors could have been rather groundbreaking if written by someone with an ounce of maturity and self-awareness but sadly it isn't, it's a disordered teenager in denial resorting to magical thinking to cope with their arrested development.

I'm honestly shocked you didn't mention how autism is clearly the inspiration for this game. The very first shot in the video showing the poster of emotions displayed on faces is something used with autistic children all the time because they have so much trouble differentiating emotions. Plus, the whole concept of the protagonist's power, helping you identify what someone is feeling, that feels very much like the creative team was taking autism as the primary inspiration for that entire facet of the game.

A true psychopath who could manipulate their projected emotion to undermine her power in a see-sawing cat and mouse narrative full of red herrings where the protagonist never knows the psychopath's true intention or end goal but still outsmarts the psychopath trapping them in their own machinations, growing as a person and overcoming the challenge the psychopath represented as a dark reflection or representation of the protagonist would have made a better story than white dude, bad, because bad / Omnipresent company keeping the town on the map, super evil because money. What we got was just lazy. Her powers would be better suited to a police procedural focused on interrogations with a time restriction to find and recover a missing person or dangerous mcguffin. Instead the writers, who have almost certainly never even been inconvenienced by real hardship in their own lives, vomit out a narrative that never stops driving its own pretentious biases into the players' faces with a narrow view of the world filled with wishful thinking and self-centrism.
