As someone who has watched nearly every Game Theory video (I'd say, without hyperbole, about 98%), the monologue at 02:00 is some of (if not the) best writing in the series, ever - and the accompanying editing/sound mixing really pushed it over the top in terms of quality. I actually back-tapped a few times just to rewatch that one part, I enjoyed it so much. Truly, well done.

I feel like terraria at least deserves an honorable mention, I think it influenced steam gaming and a slow paced or fast paced game, and have one of the biggest modding canvases out there with tons of people making new mods everyday.

This was a great list, MatPat! I love how much nostalgia was thrown at me by this and it really opened my eyes about a few of your key points here. I'm really surprised that Undertale wasn't on the list, because it really changed the way people saw RPGs and it would also have been a great way to talk about the dark sides of fandoms and how it changed a lot of the fandom communities online, and why some gamers get hate for what games they enjoy. I feel like it also forced its way into media, but I digress.

Minecraft and Undertale He’s gotta include the one he gave to the Pope (Edit) As addition to this comment: 1. Fortnite, although a good choice, is already mentioned before the final two, and I don’t think Matt would’ve already mentioned the top two 2. Minecraft would be a good contender bc it wasn’t mentioned yet, and, have you seen some of the merch for that game? 3. Undertale, reason already given, and he made an entire video based around the influence that Undertale had on the gaming world, and the world in general. To paraphrase what Matt said, it showed that violence wasn’t the only answer to conflict, and it sparked a wave of pacifist playthroughs of games like Call of Duty and stuff like that.

Minecraft, not undertale though. (Edit) Reason: Undertale was a one time game that people talked about for less than 2 years. It’s a fun and memorable indie game, but not much more. League of Legends, on the other hand, essentially created the Esports industry, Streaming industry, and Meta system - all of which are multibillion dollar projects.

Honestly, I think FNaF should be on the list because I THINK it inspired alot of people to make games that are sit and defend games or whatever you call it. Plus it's an AMAZING series of games, and it's a huge game of mystery which is why I love it.

Could probably do a video on the enthusiasm and excitement level people like you were at in December 2019 before the news of the pandemic went public and then worldwide. A video on how we get so excited and hopeful at the end of the year, looking forward to the next year hoping for the best and then discover the harsh reality in the middle of that year. 20/20 was not what we expected at all. is that news broke just several months earlier, you likely wouldn't have been able to do that St. Jude's event with so many people in the same room. I feel like this thing has really changed people, it's made us so much more wary and cautious of our surroundings and everything we touch. It sucks

The Game Theorists hi I’m just casually watching and I noticed how you put put battlefront2 in your top 8 games of the decade in there for a negative reason which would be the pay to win mechanics but you should have mentioned the complete rebirth and recovery that has happened. I hope that you can do a video in the future about it I stuck with the game from launch and loved what it has become of it. Actually he just means that he looks at a different view of what "best" is. Most influential can also be a seen as the best thing to happen for the industry. This even goes for Battlefront, it caused the community to finally say: "Alright! F this!"

Yknow I don't think the choice of Amnesia was to bad tbh. There's a looong list of indie games that really made such a difference, totally captivated all of KZfaq and some whom even built empires. I think there's honestly several games which could've taken that title and Amnesia is a great choice as it kickstarted the movement and made such a difference in early KZfaq gaming. It may have died out but it's impact while it was still in the picture was ground breaking.

I would also like to make the case that words with friends made a huge impact for certain people as well. I know it’s in the casual game category, and I myself don’t play the game, but allow me to explain: Whenever my mom tried to call me and my brother while we played an online game, we to explain to her that we were going against real people in real time, so there was *no way to pause the game,* but she never really got the message and kept calling us. But then one day, I asked my mom to help me with something, and saw that she was playing this new words with friends battle thing. (Basically, two teams of five have to spell enough words until one of the teams gets 700 points.) Of course, I didn’t press her to hurry cause I knew what it was like to be on an online match, but while she was playing I pointed out that this was basically how my brother and I felt when she tried to call us during a game that couldn’t be paused, and ever since then she’s been way better with online games now that she’s had a taste for it herself.

The most important game to me personally was New Super Mario Bros. 1. I quit playing new games when Mario 64 came out when I was in high school and New Super Mario Bros. 1 brought me back in 2011. Which led to me discovering the Pokemon and Animal Crossing handheld games which are my two favorite new series.

Warcraft 2's map editor was pretty user friendly (it had technical stuff if you wanted to make DOTA, but even a pretty young child could put together a basic scenario - I know because I *was* a child and I did), came with the game, and came out twenty years before Mario maker. I wouldn't complain, except it was literally *on screen* while Matt was talking about how there'd never been a user-friendly official map-editor.
