Toute la puissance de frappe des Bitmap Brothers résumée dans ce nouveau volet avec un éclairage sur le travail parfois très technique de David Whittaker ici dans le rôle d'un sound designer plus que d'un compositeur. Game Play strikes again. BIT IT!!! ^^

Even the PC version was great...for a PC soundtrack. It stinks in comparison not for lack of trying on Bitmap Brothers' part, but because PCs were still considered office machines back then, and nobody had cared to improve their sound capabilities, except for high-end users who could afford spending 1000s. And even high-end users preferred the Apple computers. As can be seen in the comparison near the end, the PC version was still the worst. Things would have turned out differently if X2 had been released a year or two later; there would have been at least AdLib support, if not Sound Blaster, and the latter would have competed with Atari ST for 2nd place. But then, it's probable that a competing game would have beaten X2 to the punch, and we'd be talking about _that_ game as the first with a full-length high-quality soundtrack. In the end, it's all about timing, usage of the resources available at the time, and a game good enough to become popular. For example, _Inferno_ had an excellent CD soundtrack, but hardly anybody remembers that game, because it was clunky and generally not really fun to play. Similarly, _System Shock_ was somewhat popular and had excellent sound, but was a slideshow in comparison to Doom's fluid 3D graphics. X2 hit the sweet spot music-wise AND game-wise.

Thanks again, great job, it was a surprise to me that amiga could sound this good, but to me the song dont fit the game as xenon 1 , it´s main part is not so futuristic, it´s more like a pop song but now I know the job David did, I hope you have the time for SECTOR 2, JAJAJAJAJA BYE MAN.

I had no idea what is contained within the music affects how much space is used. That's wild to me. Do lots of video games use so much sampling in their music?
@GamePlayMetal
@GamePlayMetal 6 жыл бұрын
It actually depends on the system, there are only a few machines like the Amiga which used samples, which was very flexible since that means you could have any kind of sound you wanted, unlike for example the Genesis, which used FM Synthesis, which has a very limited range in terms of the sounds it can produce. I think I should probably do an episode clarifying that kind of stuff, or make "system spotlights" explaining in detail what were the sonic capabilities of a particular old system ;)
@MarsKilla
@MarsKilla 6 жыл бұрын
@ 6:57 ok, 8 bit mono 22khz => 4MB and the floppies were 880 ko. But some games used multiple floppies, right ? The real problem was the RAM. Wasn't it ? Appart this technical point, the research job you made is astonishing (on the samples for example) !!! Well done.
@GamePlayMetal
@GamePlayMetal 6 жыл бұрын
You also need to take into account that you need enough space for the code and graphics. Xenon 2's music was approx 300 kB and that is considered relatively big for an amiga module, so there's that ;) but yeah RAM is also an issue. I think the data comparison between cds, dvds etc was maybe more obvious for a general audience
@crouchypony
@crouchypony 6 жыл бұрын
spooling the music off floppy would also be a problem, the Amiga's disk drive wasn't the fastest. I'm a big fan off John foxx/ultravox, didn't the bitmaps use one of his tracks for Gods? That would be a good contender.
@GamePlayMetal
@GamePlayMetal 6 жыл бұрын
Also, switching between disks was such a pain in the ass that even with unlimited RAM it wouldn't change much but maybe I should have mentioned that ;) Yeah the music of Gods is "Into the Wonderful", under the name of Nation 12, but I thought the process behind the re-creation of Megablast on Xenon 2 was more interesting
@CarlosDelAlamo_Estrayk
@CarlosDelAlamo_Estrayk 6 жыл бұрын
yes, the main problem was the limitation in the magnetic support capacity (880k for Amiga and 720k for Atari ST) , and his low speed-disk-access . For example, take a look at this modified Atari-ST version: It runs in a standard Atari STe 1040. but.. the game is now 25mb.long! and needs hard drive for run obviously.! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pcpzqZBjtNOWpo0.html atari.8bitchip.info/SCRSH/xen2s.html
@GamePlayMetal

Yeah, people also forget that you could have a hard drive on these machines, but unfortunately it was limited to a handful people investing in it and very, very few games took advantage of it.

Really great video!! - you tell a very interesting story, even though I dont know about music, and most of it goes over my head. This video was posted on the Lemon Amiga forum, which is where I found it. I really wish there was an endless stream of songs on the Amiga, but although I found hundreds of chart hits converted into MOD format, non of them ended up in games - that is apart from Captain Blood, Magic Pockets and Burning Rubber. Check out the LemonTubeAmiga channel for a link to my collection of chart hit modules. I've also got an update pack lined up, which will be released (for free) on the 7th on July, on the Lemon channel. Hope you can cover more modules! As far as chart hits in video games, the first complete song was perhaps A View To a Kill on the Commodore C64? But Xenon 2 is perhaps the first which uses samples to make the whole track?
@GamePlayMetal
@GamePlayMetal 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I only considered adaptations of song that sound close to the original though, and with all due respect to the C64 Sid chip, apart from the notes, it doesn't sound even remotely like the original. To a random person who doesn't like retro games, it would just sound like bleeps & bloops, unlike Xenon 2 ;)
@lifeschool
@lifeschool 6 жыл бұрын
To be fair to the C64, it could also play samples and could have made the same songs using a tracker on the 64. The Turbo Outrun songs are a good example, or Outrun Europa. But take a listen to this: csdb.dk/release/?id=55112. It works in VICE - just press SPACE when you think its Loading (this is just a title screen). I've also seen MOD 2 SID projects, like Vicious SID, which plays 4 channel Amiga Mods on the C64 (not really compatible with VICE). Really it was the memory which was the limitation. On the Amiga, the limit wasnt a 880k disk but the remainder of the disk after the game and graphics was added, so maybe 100KB to play with. I notice the Megablast MOD is 358KB, so the game itself must have taken up around 522 kb on the disk. With most games there was no space left for the music.
@GamePlayMetal
@GamePlayMetal 6 жыл бұрын
Yes I know the C64 could use samples and I address the space limitation, which is why soundtracks were extensively used in games on the Playstation 1, which often were simply regular audio cd tracks (if you replaced the Wipeout game cdrom while playing with any audio cd, the game would play the audio cd tracks instead). This video mainly addresses how Whittaker used tricks to cram that many samples in one mod ;) Its also worth noting, that Xenon 2 on Amiga came with two disks, and the ingame mod had way fewer samples from the Bomb the Bass original track than the title screen version, leaving more space for ingame level graphics.
@lifeschool
@lifeschool 6 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, the game came on TWO disks!, ha ha, I knew there had to be a way around it. ;) When I hacked the Star Wars game, and inserted my own sampled into it, I had to convert 24bit 48khz audio samples down to 8 bit and around 8 khz, which brought the samples size down to 8-13 KB each. By todays standards, thats just insane. Keep up the great work!

Dommage qu'on entende pas l'introduction de la version ST qui surpasse l'Amiga
@GamePlayMetal
@GamePlayMetal 5 жыл бұрын
"surpasse" pas vraiment, il s'agit littéralement de 2 échantillons du morceau de Bomb the Bass de dix secondes qui passent en boucle, donc c'est certes très fidèle puisque c'est juste un minuscule bout de la musique du cd (avec une qualité d'échantillonnage inférieure à la plupart des samples du mod Amiga ceci dit), là où la version Amiga recrée quasi 3 minutes du morceau d'origine.
