Fun fact: those gray cases also appeared on early French and Australian Master System 2s, until later they switched to the common pal design.

Wonder why the idea of having a "default game" on the system never caught on, that's actually brilliant, and it'd probably be more marketable than having the familiar situation of buying a console and not having any games for it.

But probably will make those units more expensive, hence the extra memory you need to store a game on them.

Just fixed one of these with the gray shell, got it for $40 and was just showing a black screen. I pinpointed the issue to a bad crystal oscillator and now it works fine. It's in really good cosmetic condition too so I'm happy to have it in my collection

With cleaning the games I find dismantling them first allow better access to the contacts - I then use a soft eraser to rub off the physical grime, then use a soft tooth brush to remove any eraser crumbs, and compressed air, then the cue tip with either windex or rubbing alcohol! Takes longer than your method, but at least you can see how clean the contacts now are not missing any bits!

The Master System II was my first video console (the version with Sonic built-in), and I still have it working ! It was kind of a hot seller in France, and I can still quite easily find games for it at the flea market. While the NES has got a "cult" status and now prices of games, accessories,...are skyrocketing, the Master System has kind of got under the radar and is still affordable !

I'd never seen a master system 2 in real life either until I got mine. I had an ad on craigslist saying I'd buy any sega games or consoles, and I had a guy get in contact with me who had a genesis, saturn, and master system he'd like to sell. I got them for cheap since I was prettymuch broke at the time (I'd forgot I had the ad posted) and he needed money that day and was pretty surprised it was a master system 2 when I met him, since I have 3 original versions and see those from time to time. Got a console (original) and a big stack of games (20 or so) including the original phantasy star CIB about a week later just browsing through craigslist, too for about what you can buy just the console from a game store around here, too.

Arghhhhh - Magic Eraser again! Each to their own but it does leave scratches in the surface of the plastic!!! Look at it in the light afterwards and you will see the scratches. Meguiars PlastX is what you need, its a lot less abrasive and doesn't scratch the plastic. Great job other than that - always nice to see a system restored :)

Pledge is ok but, a little bit of WD40 sprayed onto a micro fibre does a great job of giving a darkened sheen!
@AtariBorn

Yeah, that magic eraser kills your textured finish on consoles. I would also just go with isopropyl alcohol instead of window cleaner. Windex uses ammonia as a drying agent but there's also detergent that can leave a film on your connectors. A quick clean but not as sterile as alcohol.

The beginning was kinda like a "how to" video, but I'm glad you didn't waste any eggs. Although I don't blame the MSII for my gaming addiction (that award goes to the N64) it was nice to see one on your channel, feeding my nostalgia. You've probably done episodes on one before but I only recently subscribed after your rants on current gen consoles. Nice hobby you have there.

I've never thought of shining up old consoles with that, though I do use 'Endust For Electronics' to maintain already nice looking consoles (it doesn't leave a coating, just cleans). Just an FYI The 2 fine screws on the LH side you removed for the voltage regulator is connected to the heat disapator, in-between is thermal paste, if you remove the screw just above the black square you will need to clean and replace the thermal paste as you would have not a great connection between the voltage regulator and heat dissipator due to the paste being 20+!years old. I know this video is old hopefully you replaced the thermal paste to keep the regulator being able to keep cool.

I remember getting one of these for Christmas one year. Neither my dad nor I notice it said game is "BUILT IN"...we thought it was supposed to be a cartridge....(I was like 8 years old and my dad don't know jack about video games)...so we ended up going to the store to buy a game for me. After a few weeks of playing it, I put the cartridge in and it booted up "Alex Kidd in Miracle World". Apparently, the contacts on the cartridge I put in were dirty and it didn't see the game. So I took the cartridge out and turned the system on without a cartridge....thats how I found out the game was actually built-in.......you'd think we would have read the manual or something, but oh well, i got another game out of it LOL

Those are clone consoles by AtGames, they're licensed by Sega. Basically, a crappy emulator in a box. Sega licenses it so they can make a quick buck on something they don't build or have any responsibility for.

I havent played Shenmue in quite a while, I am on the second disc, not too far into it. Should i just start a new game becaus eit would be too confusing to catch back up, or would you recommend continuing? I havent played in a long time

I tried the credit card method on my NES and it sort of snagged one of the metal contacts. As I pulled outwards, the contact bent out of shape almost backwards. I bent it back in shape, but I've actually done this a couple of times... so just wanted to add a slight warning to using that method... and think I'll google that cartridge cleaner you used there. That looks pretty great.... thanks for the vid.

They've had one of these at the local game shop where I live for months, but they want like $100 for it. I had a chance to get a regular Master System for $50 but it sold before I could make up my mind about it. The US Model 2 is quite an interesting piece, but I am not quite a hardcore enough collector to buy it when the Model 1 is half the price and has a better list of features.

This bring back good memories, all the afternoons that I spent playing Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, Shinobi, California Games and others. TecToy (SEGA's partner in Brazil) did an excellent job of marketing here for this console.

Nice. Personally I never liked the model 2, just wasn't my cup of tea. But I love my Model 1, it has Hang On and a snail maze game as its pre-installed games. Choplifter is an awesome game btw, used to play that game a hell of a lot with my dad when I was kid.

Not sure you should paper towels. The cellulose fibers cause micro scratches. Would love to know other people's perspective on this.

As a person who lives in the Chicagoland area, .....where the hell do you find these for $40???!!!! At best I've found the power base convertor, but never a master system.

Ah, figures, it seems like slim pickins in the area these days, i guess everyone who has any older games are the collectors like us, and never sells them

The main trouble with the Sega Master System is that eventually the D-Pad on the controller breaks and falls out. You can just buy a high quality 3D printed sega master system replacement D-Pad for £2.75 off riscman on eBay!! Works better than the original!! Sega Master system Game Pad problem solved!!

Hey Adam, can you make a video showing how to repair game discs? I've gotten so many games that are absolutely destroyed and it would be nice to use them.

If I had the equipment I would. The best I can do is tell you what I do. I go to used CD stores that have disc resurfacing machines. The machines costs thousands of dollars, hence I don't own one. But they'll often clean the discs for you for a couple bucks. Doesn't work 100% of the time, you need to understand that going in. But it does save a lot of discs.

AdamKoralik Hm. I will try that out here soon, there is a store near my house. Thanks Adam.

Bart Komedy No problem. They may offer "cleaning" and "disc resurfacing." Cleaning is cheaper, but disc resurfacing is more likely to work. Keep that in mind.
