Even if you draw the cutoff at 1997, it seems very random which 2D games were brought to US and which were left in Japan. It's funny they clearly felt FMV games would sell better than lots of 2D sprite games, it was a crazy brief moment in time.

I don’t know why, because i never had a Saturn, but I love the games from this time and console, the early 3D mixed with 2D sprites just required so much creativity from the developers, and as such has quite a unique charm.

It's an era where a developer's elbow grease and your own mind's imagination help create the true picture you saw. It's like how your internal version of an Atari game's visuals differ from what someone else may have thought it looked like in their mind. The sensation is lost in the modern world where everything is trying to look like what we already know.
@Daniel__Nobre

@@GameRaveTV that is true! Almost like going from reading the book and watching the movie adaptation. The book asked more of your imagination and thus you created your own interpretation of it. The movie presents one interpretation to you. You get immersion at the cost of using less imagination, I guess :)

The saddest part about the Saturn is that devs were JUST learning how to maximize the machine by 1997 & a lot of optimization tricks like LODs & streaming from the disc were implemented in 1996. The 3D games from the Saturn in 1997+ completely dispelled the myth that it couldn't handle 3D. It was harder but you had tricks like using the infinite planes to completely go around the need for using polygons for a ground. A lot of the images we got from unreleased games like Sonic Adventures, RE2 Saturn and Shenmu were awesome. Luckily most came to the Dreamcast.. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, Sonic R, the Shenmu Saturn game, Fighting Vipers, etc look great for the time. I also think it's really cool to see how each console had its strengths. Playstation had better transparencies. Saturn had much less texture warping. The N64 had a z buffer. Etc. There was never a scenario where the Saturn would have beat the Playstation because Sony's architecture was just perfectly suited for that era but realistically the Saturn could have beaten the N64 like it did in Japan if Sega didn't botch the launch year and bog us down with the 32x. Sega's last 2 consoles just had so much potential. I miss that era. Insane innovation back then.

Had anyone bothered to bring the RAM Card over with SNK's and Capcom's fighters, it would have bought the Saturn some time. I don't know if it would have been enough, but it would have opened a few eyes. @@themeangene

@@GameRaveTV man if they had just launched with a Sonic exclusive within launch and dropped the 32X self-competition they would have at least remained competitive through 96. Sonic was huge in America. People forget that the Genesis wasn't really competitive with Nintendo until after 1991. He's the 2nd largest video game character in the early and mid 90s. The N64 literally sold millions of units in America just by the success of Mario 64. I don't think Bug is a great game but it really outlined what they should have done in 1994 or 1995 - sell Sonic as a mostly 2D game with 3D elements like boss battles. You're right about the RAM expansion. They could have used that to basically argue that the Saturn was a competitor with the NeoGeo in the 2D realm. Fighting games were singlehandedly keeping arcades alive in the late 90s so you think they would have seen that market potential. Sigh. Microsoft also made similarly dumb moves but in the opposite direction. In the 2000s they were listening to the Japanese and making Japanese exclusives & porting over a bunch of American 2D games or shmups. Then around 2009 when the leadership that eventually was in charge of the Xbox One disaster rose to prominence they freaked out over the amount of anime and graphic novels using the Microsoft name. They wanted the brand to be associated with what the American media valued. Nowadays we all realize that these companies just needed to consult with actual gamers. The idea American gamers were done with 2D in 1995 is just patently absurd.

(Comparing the Sega Saturn to the 3DO is a pretty valid statement, but their reasons for failing were slightly different. Sega of America was practically at war with Sega of Japan, and it didn’t help that both made extremely poor decisions in many of the system’s aspects. While I truly believe the Capcom and SNK Ram Cart games could have spurred a bit more life into the Saturn, Sony had already done enough damage on top of Sega’s self-inflicted wounds. 3DO was a disaster because of price point, a lack of vision for software needs, and developers who didn’t know what to do with the technology. Thank you so much for the views and comments, I really appreciate it! (Hopefully Google Translate made this readable))

As a Saturn collector I have a question that has been bugging me, I got a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga a few years back and I never noticed it until recent, but the cover to the manual is the same thickness as the rest of the pages. I think that's odd since every other Saturn game I have ever seen the cover is much thicker than the rest of the pages. So my question to you is that normal??? Or did I get ripped off buying a copy with a reproduction manual? I've been trying to look up info on the internet with no results. So if you have a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga in you collection let me know if the cover is thicker or not. Any information on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hello! Thank you so much for the questions! 1. College Slam and NBA Jam are two difference games - College Slam was created using the assets and engine of NBA Jam, and was essentially Acclaim trying to make a quick buck off of the college fans. 2. Blazing Heroes and Mystaria are the same game under different names due to licensing issues (I believe with Myst's studio, but I can't recall). Aside from the packaging and title screen / fine print, they should be the exact same game. Hope this helps, have a great week!

@GameRaveTV 7 жыл бұрын
I have a full set, every game in the video was used from my personal collection. So yes, I own DU:CCE NLE (that's just fun to abbreviate). The number of them is not the problem - it's how many were actually acquired by the public. The game was never available at retail, and was online only at Sega.com in an era where online ordering was still relatively new. There really is no way to tell how many are out there, though it is the rarest game in the library, despite people thinking PD Saga is. More curious is that the game literally *does not* display any Net Link options unless the Net-Link is actually detected, otherwise is boots and looks just like the vanilla CCE. If it weren't for the disc art, it'd be a nightmare to figure out.

It's criminal that we got bogged down with the 32x in America but I'm even more upset that the gaming media in America and Europe became outright hostile to 2D games this era. There's at least 200+ excellent Japanese exclusives that were 2D or 3D w/ heavy 2D elements that were exclusives and excellent. I understand not porting graphic novels but games like Bulk Slash or Castlevania SOTN should have been ported immediately. I have about 20 American Saturn games and 30 Japanese games. I import Japanese fighting games and SHMUPs because knowing the Japanese is irrelevant..

@GameRaveTV yeah, the contrast between something kinda boring.... and then something RADICAL! Just watching it go from high-speed gameplay to basic Asteroids reminded me of those 90s Six Flags commercials lol

an awful lotta Baseball, Soccer (Football), and racing games on this console. and That's just for USA. I haven't even touched Japan, or Europe yet

That's how Sega rolled. They were always the sports heavy system thanks to EA and Sega themselves going all the way back to the Genesis. And I can't even fathom how many more Soccer games get add in once Euro and Japanese territories are mixed in!

I don't know if it would be garbage, but the US system never really stood a chance with Sega's missteps and Sony's price move. The import side of Saturn had so much more to offer.

The Saturn was never really built for 3D in mind. It's a 2D powerhouse though. Some amazing conversion from Capcom and SNK are on there, especially in Japan.

@@GameRaveTV Yeah I think people don't get this about the system. This console came out at a unique transitional time, and not all things about how things would play out were clear. A lot of people at the time did not like most 3D stuff, because it looked like utter crap compared to mature 2D stuff which we were used to. Also, a 3D console would have to compete with computers. Contrary to popular belief, N64 3D capabilities were a JOKE even compared to modest computers at the time (say a Pentium 2 with a budget ATI rage card). Hell it was a joke compared to my PowerMac 6100! The only reason it and Sony PS succeeded was because of massive amounts of money thrown at marketing them and the fact that most of the consumers in the market are either dumb or kids that don't know any better.

The consoles also succeeded by being a far cheaper price point, an easier experience, not having compatibility issues, much better universally targeted exclusives, not having to worry about DOS prompts, or understanding all the computer building, and never needing to be patched...well...back then at least. 20 years of my life was spent in gaming retail, and I can assure you people weren't dumb nor didn't know any better. They went for what was best for them, and the majority of them were console folks. I was in my early 20s when the PSX. SAT, and the N64 were in their hey day, and I was so anti-PC you'd thought I was abused by one. I could never get PC Games to properly run, yet I just slapped the console version into the proper box and away I went. I also appreciated how much elbow grease went into making console games look superior to their previous iterations on the same hardware. No need for new graphics card or more ram, etc. At a time when people were spending $1300 for a PC or $250 for a console, I would take the console every time with $1050 worth of games.
