Gaming chairs have become prevalent, but shameless copy-pasting by most "manufacturers" has led to a stagnant industry with poor value vs. even cheap office chairs.
Sponsor: Buy Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on Amazon (geni.us/1D8Eeq) or Hydronaut paste (geni.us/Fsray)
This video includes mini-reviews of several office chairs that we've now been using for about a year at the office. The project started in December of 2019, then we filmed the bulk of the video in August of 2020, and added concluding thoughts in December of 2020. All of these chairs have been swapped around between the team for months now, and we eventually all picked our favorites. Patrick ended up preferring the ErgoChair 2, Steve preferred the Aeron after much adjustment and struggling to find the best positioning, Keegan and Andrew use the Komene Mesh chair (whoever comes in first -- we're buying a second one to solve this), and Mike uses the SL4000, but will probably also switch to an office chair once he decides which one he prefers. He does not like the SL5000 as much as the SL4000, due to the 5000's wider base.
We'll talk about whether a gaming chair is worth it, how they compare to similarly priced office chairs, and the few times we think a gaming chair makes sense. Please remember that this is completely subjective, but to help smooth-out the subjective nature of a chair, we involved the entire GN team in the editorial process of the content. Even still, it's likely that your own unique needs, setup, and your body may demand a different chair than what we all came to like. That's completely fine, and feel free to share your own favorites in the comments in a constructive way that may help other viewers. Our biggest problem with gaming chairs, though, is how little innovation they have -- but there's room to make them better, if only someone would try and commit to it. We even went through the process of getting quotes to make our own gaming chair (we're not actually making it) to determine the cost and difficulty. Both are low.

As stated in the description and video, of course, there are times a gaming chair might make sense; in general, however, our opinion on this very subjective matter is that you should buy a similarly priced office chair for the best outcome. But, as everyone's body is different and setups are different, you shouldn't feel bad about liking your gaming chair if you do have one and like it. This video includes mini-reviews of several office chairs that we've now been using for about a year at the office. The project started in December of 2019, then we filmed the bulk of the video in August of 2020, and added concluding thoughts in December of 2020. Thanks for clarifying. Furthermore, it is a fool's errand to think one will find one chair that will be comfortable 12 hours a day. The best thing is to have at least two different chairs so you can switch after a few hours. This is the only thing that works. I did pay $400 or $500 for a DXRacer a few years ago only because it was the first chair i could find that had a LOCKING RECLINE position. My other is an Eames lounge chair. Both i highly recommend but it really goes without saying that you need to add customizations to both chairs to achieve satisfactory ergonomics.

I've owned 3 or 4 different "racing" gamer chairs in my life, two of which were over $200, and all of them only lasted me between 1 and 1.5 years before breaking to where they were no longer usable, either an arm rest completely breaking off, or the back being stuck in the most far back position and no longer locking in upright positions. I finally went and got a mesh-style office chair for like $150 at office depot and it's been over 4 years and it's only now begun to deteriorate to the point of me needing a new one soon.

@@StardustLegacyFighter I've owned entirely too many chairs over the past 20 years, starting out on a cheap folding chair and finally with an HM Mira 2. When i was in college I bought my first office chair, some $150 fake leather chair and it lasted all of 2 years. I bought a nicer, $200 office chair that lasted just as long. I ended up paying for two more chairs, each $300, that likewise lasted 3 years each. (Technically I still have my last one but I had to repair it twice to different failures). I ended up keeping my HM Mira 2 from my office when we all went WFH, and after six years of sitting in the thing for 8+ hours a day every day, it still feels brand new. It might be expensive to throw down $1000 for a chair, but if that chair is still going to be around after I've already gone through $1000 of worthless shitty gaming chairs, it's absolutely worth it. Boots Theory of Economics, and it's the lesson I try to tell people everytime they tell me they're thinking about getting a $300 gaming chair.

(And even then, theres a lot of low quality gaming mice floating around) Gaming keyboards? Mediocre and expensive, a few in corsairs lineup are the only "good" ones i know of, but more expensive than better keyboards. Whereas a non-gaming branded keyboard like Ducky, Das and PFU are excellent quality for a modest price Gaming headsets? Same shit. Cant think of a good one that isnt in excess of ~$350-$400 and even those ones are lackluster compared to studio headphones made by proper audio companies for $200 At the end of the day its unreasonable to expect a company that sells everything from headphones to chairs and gaming desks to be as good as a company that specialises in one specific product

Best way to test chair for gaming is go shop at try sitting it. I tried gaming chair only once, I couldn't stand sitting it that chair for more than minute. Neither mesh filling office chairs are good for gaming. I picked every time decently hard foam seat cushion with breathable mesh. Price around 50-150USD after currency conversion for US. Got 2nd one only after many years of daily use, 1st one was worn cushion cover, while last one was bit loosy I just tightened screws and it lasts. Also cushion was initially wrong angled resulting in sliding off chair, I was almost ready to throw in trash, but it went flattened to become comfortable finally. If it breaks its cheap to get new one. But comfort and value is great. Avoid synthetic leather cushion cover. Forearm rest is best made from rubber coating, Did I forget to say it shall be wheel chair? That's all from me.

I find it amazing that GN have goes at others for the same thing. I mean you can buy a black T shirt for like under $10 if you want so why pay $20 for a GN one? It's just generic and millions of youtubers and companies use the same tshirt with just a different heat transfer printed on. Not as though its actually bespoke. And you can get proper T shirts designed for specific uses like working in hot environments for cheaper! I mean training tops for Soccer teams are way less and in some cases have stitching. And usually these places sell their products at the stadium meaning no need for postage and packaging. And you'd be supporting a local business. I mean it's not like a largge heat transfer costs under a $1 and that the T Shirts cost under $6 and not like GN charge $21 for a tshirt... I do think its funny they charge nearly the same for hoodies at what Prem Clubs in the UK charge for training tops designed for actual athletes from smaller brands like Castore that is owned partly by Tennis Pro Andy Murray and makes kits for the now multibillion rich Newcastle United (their owner worth 350BN GBP and makes them the richest sports team in the world) and Wolves that are owned by super rich Fosun International. I mean that is something... How much did GN spend on the R&D of the product? How many different designs did they pay graduates to design? Or... OR.... Did they just take a PNG they already had to someone that prints onto tshirts and say "print us 'x' amount of these" .... And then charge the same price as companies that spend millions and billions on design and materials used. Mmmm... $30 for a hoodie made cheap or one that was bespoke designed for the club i support and more importantly... Designed to go through wear and tear and used on the training ground. I mean no offence... But google Adama Traore and see how many times he has had his shoulder dislocated by people pulling on his arm and shirt to stop him... His shoulder joint gave way before the stitching did.

My situation is a bit rare in that I'm a massive individual at 6'8 and 270lbs, so I go to the absolute tallest chairs on offer, like the DXRacer King Series and the SecretLab Titan. Awesome! I've wanted someone to cover this for so long, the gaming chairs seem to be such a meme. I use the Aeron myself, the thought process was 10+ year warranty when I was previously going going through generic "office chairs" every 2 years at about $200 a pop, so might as well just spend more on something that will last - no issues after about 5 years so far, comfort is fine, not amazing but gets the job done sitting for some 15 hour days.

Good to see you, Jarrod! Yes, that makes a ton of sense and I think is probably the same thought process as the big IT businesses go through when buying them for employees. Not everyone can afford a $1000+ instant hit for a new chair (vs. 5x $200 expenses over 10 years), so clearly there's a market for cheaper ones, but for people who can afford it, your argument makes a lot of sense!

The best advice for buying a chair is to go to a store and find one that fits you and that you are comfortable in. I got a gaming chair at an office furniture store solely because it supported my posture for my computer use. The office chairs made for high capacity use were uncomfortable. The arm rests didn't go low enough, nor did the seat go low enough for me to reach the ground.

@@kwaliex There are office chairs, and then there are office chairs... It all depends on what you can afford, how much time you spend sitting in it, and how long you want it to last. If I could afford to spend $2k on a chair, I absolutely would. Especially as you get older, a good chair is critical for posture and back health. Spending a lot of time sitting in a crappy chair with bad posture is a great way to develop anything from sciatica (which is extremely uncomfortable and bothers you literally 24/7 - while sitting, laying, or standing), to much more severe and painful issues. TL;DR: Don't try to shame people for spending a lot on something that they probably spend the majority of their waking hours sitting in. Some day you'll get it.

well then, may i ask whats the best positioning for the arms and wrists? i hear that its good to have armrests line up with the table. also hear that armrest should be just that, RESTS. my right hand with the mouse is fine, but when it comes to the left hand for the kb, it gets a bit uncomfy as the kb is elevated no matter what and my wrist rests on the table. i think itd be ideal to have a shorter desk so instead of my arms being 90 degrees, its more like 95ish. but my table is too tall and my chair doesnt go high enough. but then at that point my feet dont touch the ground. so mainly i think i need a shorter table. ive been trying the seat lower and full arms up to elbows on the table but i dont think its that much better

One arm fabric has worn out, and the wheels are a bit worse for wear, but it is the best chair I have ever owned. I used to break and replace chairs every year, usually spending between 100 and 700USD. I have never been happier with a purchase than the Aeron. I live in Thailand so replacement parts are hard to come by, but the next time I am in the US I will just get new arms and wheels and it will be perfect again, hopefully for another 9 years.

Way late on this one - but in my experience a good chair for work shouldn't be 'comfy'. A sofa or arm chair should be comfy. A desk chair should be supportive and something you forget your in. Like a good shoe - you shouldn't really notice it during prolonged use. It should provide support where needed and encourage you to sit properly. If you want something comfy then go for it, ultimately your the one sitting in it. But i spent £400 on back problems before getting a Herman Miller and its been a year since my neck and back hurt. Worth it to me.

At least lttstore.com doesn't sell a stupid gaming chair. Linus may be a high pitched easily excitable sponsor boi, but at least he's a good and honest businessman that doesn't sell products he doesn't use himself. His “showcase” and sponsored videos are definitely getting close to shill territory, but he never says anything he doesn't fully believe, he just may not fully show *all* of the cons of the product in the sponsored video itself. A great example would be the 8k gaming video he did with the 3090. Everything he said was factually true, but iirc he just didn't make a comment on the price of the 3090. He definitely slammed it in his actual review of the card tho, so it's not like he will never say bad things about a product, he just usually won't say them in the sponsored content itself.

@@GandaBaer haven't bought one yet. I wanted to get a rebranded autonomous for 230 euro instead of the 370 euro autonomous is charging. Found the exact same chair. They are just not in stock due to china delivery problems. The reason i am not going for a kemeno or rebrand of the komene is because i often go all buddha in my chair and sit on it like a monk. Don't think mesh seats will endure that. But i saw a komene chair rebrand somewhere too. It was cheaper but not by much. So komene isn't ripping people off as much as autonomous is. They let their customers pay for their agressive marketing. What chair you should buy is up to you, your usecase, your size etc just do the research. But whatever you do. Do not buy the Autonomous . It comes out of the factory for 100 dollars. Then shipping, customs etc. The price should be just above 200 somewhere. Not the insane prices Autonomous asks for these china build plastic chairs. Take your time to look around. The newer komene chair isn't liked as much as the older version. Be mindful of that before you buy one.

A little late to this and IDK if anyone will read but please buy the middle-ground chairs (like the Ergochair) from an authorized dealer, not off ebay like I did. I got mine for much cheaper and while it was new, it was shipped with the wrong piston for height adjustment. At 25:59 you can see part of the piston's black base peaking over the wheel frame. Yeah, mine doesn't peak over, it sits flush with the top of the wheel base with just the stainless steel metal popping out. In short, they gave me the wrong-size piston, it's not supposed to sink all the way through like mine. This is a problem because there is literally no height to the thing and it doesn't work with my desk. I had to use a straight pipe wrench to twist the piston out and then a 3 pound rubber mallet to knock the piston out of the base. As a tip, once the piston has been removed from the chair's base (but still stuck in the wheel frame), place the wheel frame on a corner of something sturdy, like two good tables touching or a balcony's corner rails or chest-high concrete. Let gravity do some of the work for you while you hammer that piston and knock it out of the base. You can use a hammer but a rubber mallet will insure you don't destroy the piston. But the reason why I recommend buying from the manufacturer is that this stuff happens and the Ergochair makers do actually have decent warranties and send you replacement parts if something like this happens. Amazon to the rescue for me this time and it was only 25 bucks. Videos that helped: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpmPZcqnmJOUYJs.html&t= kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9idna54l6usgaM.html

I got a Secretlab Chair after having a cheap Amazon gaming racing chair for a long time. The Secretlab has been perfect for me (One of the only companies to include a smaller model for shorter people). Lumbar support is fantastic, magnetic pillow doesn't have the sag issues like the "seatbelt" pillows do, armrests are CUSHY (even more so after I warranty replaced them when some of the material started cracking on the originals. The model number for the new replacements is V3 versus the V1 on the originals I got, so I know they've been changing and upgrading things). Based on the warranty experience alone that I've had with Secretlab, the high price was well worth it. Also went with softweave over leather/faux leather and it was defintely the right choice. All that being said, when this Secretlab dies on me - and I expect it to last a VERY long time, it's still doing well a year later - I'll probably go with a mesh ergonomic office to save a bit more money and still have a fantastic chair for posture and comfort.

The Aeron is, hands down, the best chair I have ever sat on. Not only does it offer sustained comfort and lack of fatigue over very long periods of sitting, but also it is insanely durable and maintains resale value forever. There are used Aerons on the market going for $600 today, that are 20+ years old. And they are just as good today, as they were when sold new.

This is the biggest thing that most people don’t consider. You can sit in a Herman Miller or Steelcase chair for 8 hours straight and never experience fatigue/discomfort, meanwhile a cheaper knockoff of these you might start to experience it after a few hours, and garbage chairs you may notice it in under an hour or two. For most people, a cheaper dedicated office chair with a similar design to a HM/Steelcase around the $2-300 price will do solid for years. For a full time job…just bite the bullet and get the more expensive ergonomic options by the leaders..your body will thank you. Also, get some overstock/office close outs for half price versus buying new.

I did my engineering internship with Steelcase in their "task chair" group. I initially thought it was ridiculous that people paid $500-1,000 for Leap, Think, or Amia chairs. Then I started using them daily for hours on end, and I am completely amazed at how comfy they are. I personally sat in an Amia daily, and it was one of the most comfortable chairs I've ever used. I use a $500 Steelcase chair at home and I absolutely love it. I use it every day for several hours since 2011 (so 10+ years old as I type this) and it's still in immaculate shape and still comfy. It truly is worth hundreds of dollars for a decent task chair. I helped write test specs for these chairs and they're beat to shit in testing to simulate 25 years of abuse. Unless you're tossing your chair down stairwells, it will last a long and good life, and support your body well.

I have a Maxnomic that I've owned over 5 years that unfortunately is showing its wear. I would just like to replace the seat cushion and fix the arm rests and I think it would last another 5 years (the elastic head rest still hasn't drooped ;). Anyway, thank you for your insight. I've always thought the more expensive chairs were better quality and now that you've shown me that a $500 chair is the same as a $200ish chair. I'll buy that. For me the thing that pushed the Aeron chair over the top was the 12 year warranty. I am a fairly large dude at 6'3" 260. I freaking destroy chairs. After buying two $400+ gaming chairs in the same year, and having one break and drop me on my back, I decided I would go back to what I sat in at the office. Primarily because I used it for 10 years without even thinking about it. The gaming chairs however were both initially comfortable, then felt like sitting on cement after about 2 months. The aeron chairs mesh is still holding up almost 2 years later and has not sagged despite my squatch like ass spending 50+ hours a week in it. Add the breathability of it in the summer, and the complete lack of "swamp ass", and I would take it every day of the week.

Yeah I have a mesh chair. The issue I have is the reliability of the height adjustment piston. Honestly just going to go to a standing desk at this point. But racing chairs are for more than crash protection. it's also for holding you in position relative to the controls. The ones they appear most similar to are the more casual style of seats for your typical club racer. I might not even hate them if they put efforts into breathability, and had some way to hard mount sim controls like flight stick or steering wheels and pedals without having to buy a whole separate seat for that.
