I love my 486 and thought I'd make a list of some of my favorite games for it. This isn't a top list but rather just 10 games I really like to enjoy on my 486.

Heretic and Hexen series are often overlooked gems. Loved them.

Hexen has way too many obscure switch puzzles to be enjoyable.

I can't believe I missed this video! It hits a good spot for me. Our first PC was a 486 DX 33Mhz that we got in 1993. In 1995 we upgraded it with a Creative multimedia kit - 4x CDROM, soundblaster 16, speakers and a ton of games. For me, the 10 games I enjoyed most on that machine were: Monkey Island 1, XCOM & Terror from the deep (it came in a bundle box with both games), Jurassic Park, Jazz Jackrabbit, Commander Keen 4, Lemmings, Duke Nukem 1, Syndicate and of course Doom. Some were shareware but little 8-year-old me never finished them anyway, so who cares! Weekend fun!! I would have put C&C on the list, but when I got it in 1996 it was simply too slow to run on the 486. Maybe 1 frame per second at most!

We got our first family PC just after the 486 era (a Cyrix 5x85). P100s were in the shop at that time aswell. I've obviously heard of most of these but only really played a couple of them but as choices to play on a 486 they're definitely good calls. Back then I've played on friends 486s or at LANs at various places. They're more of an interest to me than a nostalgic thing. Very nice video Rik 👍

Thanks! It may be one of my favorite eras of computing just because it was such a big world opening up for me as far as gaming. Coming from a Super Nintendo into the world of the 486 was an eye opener in terms of selection. Will I pick a Pentium most of the time however? Probably hah!

Ok, here are all the games I played as well: Sim Tower, Full Throttle, Master of Orion, X-COM and Heretic. Heretic has a special place in my heart because it's the first game I played in a lan setup. My step dad was studying engineering in the 90s and he setup two PCs in his apartment for us to play. I enjoyed the video very much, it was over too soon!

Great list of games! It's really a great era with so many classics and I have similar memories of a null modem setup between 2 of my machines.

Nice - Ive just got a 486 built and am loving revisiting dos games from 92 - 94 right now. Its nice to have the 486 that really makes me focus on games from a couple of years, rather than using my P3 which then opens it up over many more years (though more 3d games from the late 90's)
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
Yep exactly! I love my P3 for the wide, wide range of games it'll handle but lately I've been having a lot of fun with more narrowly focused machines for a specific set of games or time period. Feels authentic! And slow!

486 for me and many of my friends is all about we set a specific platform, like socket 3 is the last “486” platform so agree with you! You should come to our 486-themed LAN parties in Sweden when the pandemic is managed, we play all of those you had there plus many more. And THANKS for not including Doom, hate that game haha!

For 486 era games I really enjoyed playing One Must Fall: 2097 by Epic Megagames, The Shadow of Yserbius by Sierra, Where In The USA Is Carmen Sandiego (both DOS and Windows 3.1 CD-ROM versions) by Broderbund, Caesar II by Sierra, Mortal Kombat for PC, Links 386 Pro Golf by Access Software, and I'm sure a few others I can't think of. This was perhaps my favorite era of PC gaming, but I may be wearing rose tinted glasses because I grew up on them, albeit a bit late.
@RiksRandomRetro

Oh that is a nice list for sure! And yeah it's easy to look back at it with perhaps too much nostalgia as it's hard to relive that exact period in time. It was exciting though consider how fast the PC gaming experience was moving. Felt like every game that came out pushed the boundary further!

Great list of games. Love to see them running on this machine. Also great to see you have all those big boxes. Impossible to come by over here. One time I picked up some old hardware from this guy who said he threw away hundreds of big box games cause he didn’t think anybody was interested. He told me how he separated the cardboard / paper / plastics / disks / cds and took everything to the recycling centre .... very painful.... I do remember having Full Throttle when I was a kid and it blew me away.
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And oof yeah I think sadly that's the way with a lot of old games and hardware. It just gets thrown out assumed it has no value at all. It's up to us to save it all!

I have never played game 2: puzzle game. Thanks. it looks interesting. I played Syndicate & Star Control II on my 486 machine. Supaflex and the incredible machine were the puzzle games I enjoyed.

Chip's challenge is definitely interesting! And if I recall it had a "modern" sequel recently by the same developer after all this time. Syndicate was definitely amazing and I've heard nothing but good things about Star Control II, especially the melee mode, even though I haven't played it much. Some great games to be found on this era of computer!

Really want to build a super powerful 486 next! I'm putting together the Pentium (some memory refreshing for this AT build that I completely had to re-learn), have Pentium II & III covered, as well as Athlon 64 FX-57. So 486 is the last one (yeah right).
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah I keep thinking to myself I'll build broad range systems that can cover a big time period. But then I keep finding excuses to get much more time specific machines set up... A powerful 486 would be awesome! Hmm...

Is that a Vibra16 S sound card? Does it have an actual Yamaha OPL3 chip? Those are probably the best SB16 versions of all, flawless low noise card with real FM synth and no hanging note bug. Got one in my 486 too, great card :)

You got it! The Vibra came from another machine I upgraded and felt it fit great in this machine. Super compatible, sounds good and been an overall nice experience.

Got a question I have a HP Vectra VL2 SE 50 and any Idea where to find info on that board for bios upgrade and what strange on mine is the board has the layout jumpers for WB or WT cache on the board but not the actual jumper pins on the board so I can actually add jumpers to it to set it. When I look my board up there should be pins but mine lacks them and my onboard video requires a proprietary video RAM instead of just buying the ram chips and setting them in the socket on the MB. It almost like my VL2 board was a strange prototype compare to what I have found online. Have a good one.

Hmm that's a tough one. Wish I could offer some advice there but I haven't messed with that model nor ran into that issue. I've been lucky that this particular Vectra has given me basically no problems but I also haven't really dug into it much either. It's virtually untouched except for some basic cleaning since I got it. Sorry I don't have any advice on where to check but best of luck!

Thanks for watching! It's a 486 66 Mhz, about as classic as it gets. Then 16 MB of ram, Soundblaster 16 vibra and the original hard drive, I want to say about 40 MB, or thereabouts. It's still fully original, with nothing changed!

what model are the sound boxes? also do you know a good place to get crt screens?
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 3 жыл бұрын
The speakers are Juster brand and I think it's basically your average type of cheapo speakers from the 90s. They don't sound great but they sure are authentic to the experience! As far as finding a CRT really I just keep an eye on local market places and grab them when I can or need to. Every few weeks or months people are basically throwing them out and that's been my source of CRTs for some time.

I have a very similar 486 probably the same model but it has no cdrom 11mb hdd and I couldn't find the audio. Is a pin on the motherboard or it need a Isa audio card? Sorry I miss hear and give a second watch. Mine has not a sound card yet.
@RiksRandomRetro
@RiksRandomRetro 2 жыл бұрын
Very nice! It's a neat design and I'm a fan of what HP made during this era. As far as the sound card it's an ISA based expansion card. I can't remember exactly but a soundblaster 16 version or 16 compatible clone. Works well for the period of games played on it.

Still play the original TTD. OTTD is great but somehow loses its charm with all the QoL stuff.

Yes you do have a point for sure. Something about experiencing the game as it was as OTTD has indeed morphed to something much, much bigger over time.
