Who wins in a battle to take over a planet, Tyranids from Warhammer 40k or the Xenomorphs from Aliens?
In this video, Facility D20 set out on a challenge to 3D Print a some xenomorphs from the movie Aliens along with assembling and painting some Warhammer 40k Tyranids, to look like cold black aliens.. A resin Anycubic Photon and Wash and Cure station was used to 3d print the parts.
This video was inspired from channels like Miniac Painting, Black Magic Craft, TheDMsCraft, Real Terrain Hobbies, Geek gaming Scenics, and Eric's Hobby Workshop.

I believe the first appearance of Genestealers was way back in 1989 in Space Hulk. Said game pretty explicitly patterns its gameplay on the 1986 movie Aliens, with tight quarters, flamethrower use, etc. I remember getting it and the expansions and loving the callbacks. The designers were pretty open about being fans, IIRC.

I mean, for sure they were inspired by them, and it pretty much is evident with how Space Hulk plays out. However, they did make them their own thing, so it's fine. There is a fine line between being inspired by something and modeling closely, and ripping them off whole sale. There is enough differences at the time, and over time, where they are two distinctly different properties.

I could be 100% wrong, but if I’m not mistaken, the Xenomorphs were the original inspiration for the Tyranids. So, did GW rip off Alien? I wouldn’t say they ripped them off as just took inspiration. @@FacilityD20 Okay, back when GW had their own forums and multiple social media platforms, about 2012ish, they went after an indie-author who wrote a series of books. They sent legal notices to the author and Amazon to remove the books and stop selling future copies. GW claimed they owned the trademark and copyright to "Space Marine" as well as other common words and phrases. In fact, they still claim to own "the protection" to use the word Space Marine, even though it is a common word used since the 1930's. Amazon refused to adjudicate the issue and told the author to work it out with GW. The story went out to a few news sites and famous people like Wil Wheaton signal boosted the injustice. Eventually, Amazon looked at the complaint when EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) came in to help the author. The book was later restored to be sold on the platform as well as the author being able to sell it on their own. The backlash forced GW to shut down all their social medias and their own forums. This is also why all the paint names were changed to unique names as well as rebranding the marines, so they can claim the undisputed protections of those words. GW still claims they own the registered and "unregistered" (their word) protections of the word(s) and phrases as well as others. Same stuff they are pulling on KZfaq with "fan art" even though that is protected in the USA.

In a round-about way, yes. But by the time tyranids came out, the whole "bio-mechanical alien" trope was pretty widely copied already. Also, I feel like a lot of early tyranid concepts were attempts to emulate aliens from video games at the time as well. In that medium, the xenomorph-styled alien was already a recurring trope in the late 80's.

in terms of who would win I would have to go nids, xenomorph life cycle is just weird, you need a queen to make face huggers and the face huggers then make xenomorphs when they attach to a living animal, and then help new face huggers attach to more people? tyranids turn biological matter (so not just animals) into soup and then make whatever they want, they have far more forms they can choose from so can make a counter to xenomorphs while xenomorphs are relatively unchanging. in terms of numbers tyranids win again and having the hive mind means xenomorph pick them off one at a time strategy wont really work. games workshop rips off... sorry is "inspired by" whatever they can get away with, makes what they did to the fan creators the height of hypocrisy. that being said a lot of the original tyranids where a lot more starship trooper style bug monsters than xenomorph.

Eldar are based heavily on early Japanese mecha from the 1980s. They doubled down on the aesthetic when Neon Genesis Evangelion came out in 1994 by copying color schemes for the different craftworlds. Go look at Fight! Iczer-One (1985) which has elf-looking people piloting sleek mecha that could easily be mistaken for Wraithlords. Falcons and Wave Serpents are basically Mazone fighter ships from Space Pirate Captain Harlock (1977) flipped around. I'd be completely remiss if I didn't mention Dragon's Heaven, whose power armor and mecha would easily be mistaken for Wraithguard or Aspect Warriors. Death Corps of Krieg? French WWI uniforms. Valhalla Ice Warriors? Soviet WWII winter gear. Armageddon Steel Legion? German WWII Afrika Korps. Vostroyan First Born? Crimean War Russian Cossacks. Terminator armor and Space Marine Dreadnoughts? Taken straight out of Starship Troopers. Then there's all the stories and novels that are just rehashes of other books. 15 Hours is Catch-22 set in 40k. Fire Caste is Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness. Siege of Vraks is basically Stalingrad. Colonel Schaffer's Last Chancers are directly stated by Warhammer's designers to be the Dirty Dozen. The list just goes on and on lmao
