There were two main reasons why they couldn't continue allowing it to trade. They didn't suddenly have billions in cash so couldn't clear with the CH nor could they create the covered calls required.
@maxmartin2763
@maxmartin2763 3 жыл бұрын
@@jonosimpson3379 Agreed. The clearing house has to take the opposite position by LAW. The Robinhood trade positions were so one-sided that it created a $3 billion liability for the clearing house and Robinhood. Robinhood negotiated the liability down to $700 million (their market CAP) and agreed to freeze trading. Sh*t happens when your platform doesn't have the assets to back up it's customer trading positions and the customers would declare bankruptcy rather than settle a heavy trading loss. It was a "boxing way out of their weight-class" moment for Robinhood.
@jacobdallas7396

Thats not a short squeeze. You state its when the stock rises and the short has to pay more to buy it back again. A short squeeze is where there are too many short positions and not enough liquidity in the market. The the shorts basically compete with each other to buy back the stock from the limited sellers which forces the price up.

If you start a business the biggest and best bit of knowledge that older friends family and bosses told me was. When you start your new and own business don’t expect to make money that’s really noticeable for the first 5 years and if you are smart enough with what you want to need you’ll have a business after that 5 year beginning. If youjust have the things you need to keep growing than your want to have all new toys and show off than you may as well just keep working for companies instead of having your own.

Please do not shoot me... I am a casual observer of financial markets and worked as a commodities trader during my 20s. The one thing that confuses me most, is that all sides love money. The measure of hedge fund success is money, and the measure of your success against hedge funds is also money. I have nothing against liking/loving money, but stand just far enough away from an argument and it's hard to tell who is right from who is wrong...

Bloomberg, please find somebody who can explain to you the business model of Robinhood or simply disclose how much you got paid for this piece of advertisement. People using Robinhood to buy/sell stocks: YOU ARE THE PRODUCT. The real customers of Robinhood are the investment funds, the guys behind the scene making money out of you. You are the product, and Robinhood does not like that you "abused" its product to actually turn a profit. Making money from the stock market was always a privilege for rich people and i am sure that Robinhood will modify the app to a point where it can ensure that the market will work again in the way it is designed.

oh stop it, the total dollar amount of money retail has in the markets compared to institutions is a drop in the ocean, many people with $1000 each is < than a few people with $1B each

You don't understand how it works. Stop and think and research before you go with your gut. Easy options trading alone changed the market forever, and that is just one aspect. If you don't think retail can move the markets, you don't know how the markets work.

I must have missed something. So "what's coming for Wall Street?" All I got regarding this in the end was that one of the commentators said there is possibility of disruption that is coming to Wall Street. I was expecting a little more depth to what was being conveyed by the title. Perhaps a more apt title would be "What we finally know about that which everybody already knows".
