This video was phenomenally thoughtful and well organized, I will definitely refer anyone I know who’s looking to purchase a new monitor here as a starting point. I’ve been following your monitor reviews for years (was an early adopter of G Sync) and appreciate all you guys have done to raise the bar for monitor related content.

I play competitive games at high level on a 32 inch, 1440p, 1800 curved monitor (85 cm eye distance) and I have to say that when you adapt on 32 inches, it is even better in competitive games. I play WoW pvp arenas (rank 17 world last season) Overwatch (GM) and WZ (2 K/D). In WoW it's all about tracking the UI/add-ons, you can have that UI much bigger at 32 inches and it's easier to see it. In OW/WZ targets are bigger so you can see them much better which is very useful at longer ranges. You also don't have to be glued to the monitor, which is good for eyes and your posture. I know people say you have to move your eyes, but if you play 24-27 inches, you can see all.. but check out any pro gamer, they moves their eyes all the time also. I will definitely buy the AW3225QF.

Do you reckon now is a good time to buy the ASUS PG27AQN? I'm a bit reluctant to get one at the moment, as the recent news about an upcoming ASUS PG27 monitor with G-Sync Pulsar has really caught my attention. Seems like a close to perfect solution for someone who would use the monitor for both gaming (comp fps and AAA titles) and office work. The cynic in me just doesn't see ASUS releasing a firmware update to bring Pulsar to 'older' monitors, like they did for ULMB 2. Thoughts on whether I should bite the bullet on a PG27AQN now, or if I should wait for at least more news/details on the upcoming PG27?
@tftcentral
@tftcentral 5 ай бұрын
The G-sync Pulsar tech definitely won't be coming to any existing/older models I'm afraid, as NVIDIA have confirmed that it requires a hardware addition to the G-sync module. I expect the forthcoming "PG27 series" screen to basically be an update to the existing PG27AQN, 27" IPS with 1440p and 360Hz so maybe worth hanging on to see more about that. unless you can find the PG27AQN at a great price in the meantime

These few dual mode 4k and 1080p monitors coming out. Do you have thoughts on them? Some of my older games look better in 1080p than 1440p. Oh and i play almost exclusively single player RPG, RTS, point-and-click plus a few 3rd person shooters. Stellaris and CK3 are the only online games i play

I think those could suit you very well tbh, assuming you’re primarily using your display for gaming and dynamic content. Would give you all the benefits of OLED, an upgrade in res to 4K when you want higher detail, and then also support 1080p at insanely high refresh rates. The models coming from LG and Asus should be well worth a look! (Covered in our CES round up video if you need more)

Unfortunately my dream panel was not released this year, but Alienware did release it in a 27 inch body. I'm talking about a 32 inch 1440p 360hz OLED. 32 inch is more immersive than 27. 1440p is also comfortable for productivity and with VRR you can still downscale to 4K with the same quality of a 1:1 pixel 4K monitor. 2025 will be a crescendo year.

@@rouensk 4K you need to squint your eyes for productivity. I use 1440p 32inch now and unless your really up close you cant notice any lower PPI but its a non issue with QDOled which has PPI boost technology. In 1440 games run much smoother.

The forthcoming 32" 4K 240Hz QD-OLED monitors coming in Q1 this year are very close to these requirements - well, semi glossy coating as opposed to fully glossy. MSI, Asus and Gigabyte for instance have flat format models coming. Gigabyte's model has DP 2.1 with apparently UHB20 speeds, although I expect that will cause delays to its release. DP 2.1 isn't needed though for these specs, so I wouldn't let that requirement put you off the others: tftcentral.co.uk/articles/when-is-displayport-2-1-going-to-be-used-on-monitors Info on those new models in this round up: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLp4qcJ0u8vNdok.html

Their pixel density is low so they tend to be better for gaming from a more distant viewing position, but they’re certainly nice for immersion. I would ask you, since I have 2 screens now (new PC user one year), if you would rather wait for the 34 or 39 inch LG or Asus monitor or go with one if the 32 inch models in 4k. I am really curious about the immersiveness of the curved monitors, but am a little afraid of motion sickness (if that's a thing) and somehow i do still want to use at least 1 of the two for writing and reading (work). Was first waiting for the 32 inch QD-OLEDs and use 3 monitors, but I then realized that I want more immersion and preferably on an OLED, whichever one that does the job. But it could be "too small" but 42 inch seems unreasonable on a desk.

@@tftcentral yeah exactly as you wrote, I was planning on having one or both vertically and/or one horizontally with the new screen in the middle. Got real good hardware available, but never tried curved and kind of avoided it and waited for something really good in the 32 inch range. But there has to be a reason they still sell the bigger curved ones and the recently introduced Asus 34 inch woke my interest. It's a range of titles, AAA but also pixelart (sometimes revisiting real old titles too).. I guess a little patience for the 32 inch LG and Asus this summer would be good and for comparison with the 32 inch QD-OLED monitors. By then my mind is perhaps made up about 32, 34 and 38-39 inch sizes. Glad to see new content as always and thanks for trying to help!
@tftcentral
@tftcentral 5 ай бұрын
@nathanaelniklaus2981 I think the ultrawide models might serve you nicely here and they’re a really good format for something a bit different. Do the games you play support the 21:9 aspect ratio? If so, they can be really good. In my opinion curved is better and appropriate for an ultrawide although the new Asus 34” is a particularly steep curve at 800R so that’s quite extreme. The first gen 34” OLED monitors are much more subtle. Maybe worth hanging on for a bit this year to see how the new 34” and 39” models fare, and it looks like there may be a couple of new ones released with less of a curve too (eg a model from Gigabyte). Panel info pending

Im really struggling to pick a monitor. I havent had a new desktop monitor sonce the early 2000s and it of course wasn't a "gaming" monitor. Looking for a great gaming monitor that still has decent text clarity as it will likely be my only monitor. I dont do a lot of work from home, but when i do it is text based. While I'd love an oled, i feel my use case may make it impractical. Games are mostly single player RPG, but I have an eclectic taste in games. I dont want to buy more than my computer will handle. Size wise thinking 32" curved, though could be persuaded to 27 or 34. Desk sits right next to a window. Screen will be perpendicular to it. However there are blinds and a curtain with decent ability to block light if needed. Comp specs: i7 13700k 3060Ti w/ 8gb vram 32gb ram I'd really appreciate recommendations that aren't overkill for my computer. Thanks!

I would personally recommend getting a flat format if you're going to go with 27" or 32", or curved if it's an ultrawide (not TOO curved though). Curved on a 32" 16:9 is a bit overkill in my opinion and makes it more problematic for the text work you'd be doing. You could maybe look at the 1440p resolution 32" or 27" models as those would be easier to drive from your system than a 4K resolution, and i imagine would still be a nice upgrade compared with your old monitor. What screen/resolution/size do you have at the moment?

If a panel claims 1000 nits at a 3% window, does that mean it’s capable of showing that 1000 nits on multiple areas at once? For instance, sparks flying through the air. Would each spark be able to hit that peak brightness?
@tftcentral
@tftcentral 5 ай бұрын
No, although the 3% window is a fairly large size actually relative to things like sparks. Basically it's a proxy for the overall APL (average picture level), so the equivalent of if 3% of the screen was white, and the rest was black. it's obviously an unrealistic real-world use case, and just uses as an indication. So it will really depend in your scenario how bright the overall image is, what else is on the screen (it won't be black) and things like that

An A-TW polarizer can help with the off-angle glow on IPS panels, although it's pretty rare to find it on modern monitors. A few being released by LG themselves with it though which is a positive sign

Holding out for a 'unicorn' glossy WOLED. There must be one coming. Some day. Somewhere. Somehow. Either that or I really need LG to release a C3/C2 'Mini.'

Dough have a 27" 1440p 240Hz model going in to mass production at the moment which should be available soon that has a glossy glass coating: tftcentral.co.uk/news/doughs-27-glossy-oled-monitor-is-now-the-spectrum-black-with-glass-coating-in-partnership-with-corning Also planning a 32" 4K 240Hz model further down the line but not sure on timescales: tftcentral.co.uk/news/dough-announce-the-worlds-first-31-5-4k-240hz-oled-monitor-with-glossy-and-matte-coating-options If these grab your interest, you can also buy their screens from major retailers nowadays like Amazon, B&H etc so that gives more reassurance around purchasing. I'd also suggest checking latest views and user reports from Reddit, as (I'm sure someone will chip in soon in reply to this very post) they have a....questionable past

The ideal gaming monitor would be a 32 inch 1440p OLED, which does not exist

What I'm looking forward to with OLED is pixel response time. I heard a 120Hz OLED looks as smooth as a 360Hz LCD. That suggests a 60fps game on an OLED could look as smooth as if it were 180fps on an LCD.
@tftcentral
@tftcentral 5 ай бұрын
It's a 1.5 ratio, so a 120Hz OLED would be equivalent to a 180Hz LCD. A 240Hz OLED would be equivalent to a 360Hz LCD and so on. But the good thing is that there's no worry about overshoot at all, or changing response time performance during VRR or at lower refresh rates.

No, the more important question is why are there NO 1600p 21:9 OLED Ultrawides?! 😡

@@tftcentral 4k OLED UW coming is very exciting. However, why does it seem the industry is abandoning the 1600p res in UWs?

I think it was just fairly niche in popularity. I like it too, in fact that’s one of my common daily monitor choices. Those new OLED look great though don’t they?

@@tftcentral Not seeing *any* 1600p OLED mentioned in that video.. I'd love a (non-UW) 16:10 (1600p) display, but they just don't exist excepting some laptop screens.

I will NEVER understand why there is a gap in the market for 1440p 25'' for competitive with an insane ppi/inch ratio and sharpness/resolution almost 4k-like but not as heavy for the GPU while having the benefit of smaller screen with perfect peripheral vision. Just Imagine a 25'' 1440p 300hz Oled panel with instant pixel responce, 0 video input lag, 0% motion overshoot/ ghostin , perfect peripheral vision, insane sharpness and a more realistic 300hz being maxed out by an rtx4090 literally for every single game in the market. THESE SPECS ^ ARE A GOLD MINE WAITING FOR THE 2ST COMPANY TO MAKE SHTLOADS OF MONEY OVER NIGHT.

The "best" entirely depends on your requirements and uses. The guidance in this video should at least help you narrow down the size, res, refresh rate and panel tech most suited to your needs hopefully :)

As of now I think I might want to go with 32 inches oleds since pg42uq still feel big for my usage. I have not decide if I should wait for the current quantum dots offering or wait for the high refresh models coming later this year. I got a 540hz monitor already so maybe 480hz mode 1080p is not that important? (Also, 1080p at 32 inch probably looks really bad..)

Can u please recommend some gaming monitors which go “really” low in brightness? I recently bought an IPS 100 Hz monitor from MSI, & it’s too bright even on 0% brightness level 🫣 Is 27 inch Odyssey G5 from Samsung any better for me?😭
