If you are going to buy a Brand new or used Mac please select a variant which offers better RAM and storage options, even though the price is higher. If you are going to do any Engineering, rendering or CS stuff in it which requires more ram. If you are going to do only simple tasks like word processing and movies a 8GB ram paired with 128GB is enough. If you do memory consumption tasks on a low ram with low storage mac(the free storage available) there will be much less space available for the memory swapping process making the system lag. If you plan to buy a 128GB one and then upgrade your SSD (last storage upgradable MacBook is 2015) it would cost much because MacBook has proprietary SSD adapters which prevents 3rd party SSD compatibility. So you would have to use an adapter to convert the 3rd party SSD to apple proprietary. One of the main ones you want to consider when buying a used MacBook is the battery life, you cannot always depend on the battery health status and the battery cycle count it displays. If the previous used had used it for pretty heavy stuff the MacBook gets pretty heated. which may lead to a faulty battery even if the count stays low. So check for the actual battery life and check if the bottom rubber pads. If they have been worn out due to the excess heat caused by the battery the battery may be a faulty one. If you remove the bottom plate of the MacBook you can see the battery at the bottom and if it shows any swallowing's please avoid. After 2015 MacBook introduced the force touch pad, in this scenario the flex cable that comes from the keyboard goes to the track pad and a flex cable that carries both the signals of keyboard and the trackpad goes from the trackpad to the motherboard underneath the battery. If the battery swallows' it might damage this flex cable, which causes the trackpad and keyboard to not work. So my point is if you have enough money to buy a brand ew MacBook don't hesitate and buy a new one. If your on a tight budges and you want to buy a used MacBook please check the MacBook thoroughly before buying. The repair costs are not that cheap. FYI - up to 2012 MacBook offers manual RAM and Storage upgrade, up to 2015 MacBook offers Storage upgrade
