Times fly. If I want to build my 'glory days' system, I need to look for a PIII 800. I still think that most of the best games I've played don't need more. Besides Cyberpunk, of course. :) From the past to today: Pentium 200 MMX, Pentium III 667/800, Athlon 64 3200+, Phenom 2 X4 955, i5 4460, Ryzen 5800X.

Nice. Started on a Pentium 100mhz, then Celeron 500mhz, then Pentium 4 2.4ghz with that RD RAM. Then I started building my own PCs and went Athlon 64 3400+, Intel Core 2 Duo e6420 and e6320 OC'd to 3.0-3.2ghz daily driving, then a Q6600 that ran at 3.4ghz easy, 3.6ghz with voltages that I couldn't cool with my old Zalman comfortably. Then I went FX-8350 for a few years in a row... LOVED it. Miss it. I'm most nostalgic about that one, honestly. Then Ryzen 3600, Ryzen 5900x... and that's where I'm at now. Asus STRIX B550-F Gaming WiFi II (BT 5.3/WiFi 6e) / Ryzen 9 5900x PBO'd and CO'd / 2x16GB DDR4 3600 C16 dual rank RAM, fully tuned timings / 6700XT 12GB / 8x storage devices (SSDs, 2x HDDs in RAID 0, 1x HDD for storage, and a Samsung 970 Evo Plus as the boot drive/favorite game of the month drive lol) It's always top 1% in the 5900x scores on benchmarks thanks to the CO and PBO and dual rank, tweaked RAM... but it's still NOTHING gaming-wise to a 5800x3D or anything Zen 4.

@@JustAGuy85 I have 3 computers right now. C2D E8400 @3,9 GHz for Win XP, FX 6300 @4,2 GHz for Win 7 and the main rig. I have pretty decent motherboard for FX platform (Gigabyte FXA-990-UD3 rev 5) so I am pondering if I should go for FX 8350. Although FX 6300 in all overclocked system seems to do splendid work already. Enough for a Win 7 computer, IMHO. Even Phenom II 955 handled Win 7 pretty well. I can even play Baldur's Gate 3 on it with acceptable framerate (GTX 970) and this one is really CPU hungry.

@@RudolfSikorsky I saw so much hate on AMD CPUs through that time that I stopped paying attention. I did a job for a friend who doesn't even have PC's. The job wasn't PC related lol, would have been a mechanic job on a vehicle or something, I honestly can't remember. He asked me if I'd take a motherboard that hadn't been used. It was an AM3+ mobo. I was just gonna sell it. But I built that FX-8350 rig with it lol. It was an Asus M5A97 R2.0. So, I got that probably around the time 4th or 5th gen Intel was out. I was on a C2Q Q6600. Point being, I honestly don't know. I found this much out... I had an HD7850 that ran good on it, and I went to an HD7870 that did improve performance a bit. Then I went to an RX480 8GB. I gained little to no performance. Built a mining rig with RX480 8GB's. This was like 2017? I built the rig with a cheap CPU, a Pentium G4560. Turns out, it was practically an i3 7100, just no boost clock (3.5ghz) and probably smaller cache amounts. That CPU did better in 90% of games than my FX-8350. But, as you can imagine, there were quite a few games that did use more than 2c/4t... Battlefield did, Prey did, some games I can't remember did lol... And in those games, even playing around with CrossFire RX480 8GB's, the FX-8350 could come back and do better. For the most part, the G4560 was a better CPU. Whole point is a long way of saying "I don't know." I don't know if that motherboard is just enough or more than enough and I dunno if you'd see gains, and if so, how much you'd see, using the GTX 970. But if you are familiar with these parts, you probably know.

I like the comparisons! I’m currently rocking a 6600k on a z170 motherboard with a gtx 1060. The 7700k is the best cpu I can find without needing to get a new motherboard, and I’ve seen a 50$ and an 80$ listing within the past week alone. I’ve never had any issues gaming on my 1080p 60hz monitor, but my loading times on baldurs gate 3 are getting ridiculous, so I’m hoping the new cpu will help speed things up a bit. I’ll most likely end up upgrading to a better gpu early next year, then upgrade the cpu/mb to 13th or 14th gen in 2024.

Tech Evovled : the problem isn't the price of this CPU. I would actually buy it again (I used to have but sold it due to quite a lot of stutters due Win 10 surrounding not being kind to only 4 physical cores). The problem with any Intel cpu-s is that the motherboards become completely scarse in 2 years time since their release. And if you do find a used motherboard, they have a very high probability of being degraded on the VRM-s side or memory banks side (if the previous owner did any kind of OC-ing, which most of them did) and they have PIN GRID ARRAW sockets which is stupid and can be damaged very very fast which is very hard to repair with realignment. While the CPU-s are LAND GRID ARRAW which is virtually impervious and since the CPU-s are harder to kill than MOBO-s, you see where I am going ? The motherboards would have to be available for at least as long as AMD-s AM4 are (since 2017 until 2024). For example AMD motherboards have indestructable socket AM4 and can outlive the CPU-s on the mechanical side. Plus, AM4 board released in 2017 and the B450, X470, B520, B550 and X570 can still be bought in 2024 new. That is now 7 years of NEW spare motherboards....and guess how long will they be available used !!!!

I'm getting cpu bottlenecks during certain games that measures around 30-50% gpu usage and 100% cpu. For example, assetto corsa competizione at 1440p high settings, I will get a rough range of 30-80fps varying inconsistently and around 30-50% gpu usage, sometimes 80%, while the cpu is pinged at 100% the whole time. It becomes a bit more more playable at medium settings. I feel as though if I spend $100 on just the 7700k and call it a day, then overclock it, it may alleviate a significant percentage of the cpu bottleneck, though I don't know by how much, but for $100, I feel fine with that for now. I'm trying to avoid doing anymore upgrades until I decide on a whole new system, either going with intel 13 or 14th gen i5, or probably the amd R5 7600 route. I do plan on keeping this older system as a second pc. If someone has knowledge on this, it would help.
@tech_evolved
@tech_evolved 6 ай бұрын
If you don't want to build a whole new system I would suggest the 7700k upgrade. Getting the hyperthreading and higher clocks will pair good with the 5700 xt. If you want to save and just upgrade to a new platform, I'd suggest amd 7600. It's more than enough for future upgrades and the platform should get future cpu support so you can ugrade to a later generation when you look to upgrade again.

Genuine question, I bought my PC back in 2018, and other than upgrading some other components my i5-7400 is still powering this machine. Sadly, as it is prebuilt, the motherboard they chose doesn't have too much room for improvement as CPU compatibility is quite limited. The maximum I could mount is an i7-7700K (Bios upgraded to the last available), do you recommend the upgrade as a quick refresh and "cheap" alternative to rebuilding the whole PC? Mind you I use it quite equally to work and game on. I think the doubled threads could help a lot but maybe I'm wrong
@tech_evolved
@tech_evolved 10 ай бұрын
Personally I would save and switch platforms. I think if you can find find a cheap am4 motherboard and pick up a first gen ryzen that would be a better quick fix than the 7700. Really just depends on the prebuilt's compatibility with mobo size. I think you should be able to pick up a b450m and an r5 1600 for around $120 ish in US while the 7700k is $150 and the 7700 is $90 (just on eBay rn). That would allow you to upgrade to 5950x or something since you do work as well.

@@steffenlze0178 I don't have a powerful card so I can imagine the bottleneck I would get with one but as I said the main use is not just gaming and now I can assure you that with 4 threads, even tho I cleaned Windows of bloatware and other stuff as much as I can, doing multiple heavy tasks is getting pretty choppy. As much as I want to do more with this computer, changing mobo is not doable since windows was installed as OEM and I would have to reinstall everything just to make it work with another mobo

Still using a 7700k @ 5Ghz (all cores/threads), 64GB DDR4 @ 3800 MHz + NVMe M.2 SSD. Windows 10 has been de-bloated. Don't run any other apps when gaming, with the Spectre/Meltdown mitigations deactivated. Built the system late 2015 with a 6700k and then swapped in the 7700k at launch. It still meets all my gaming needs. Though I use a 75Hz FreeSync monitor. The system has served me well for a long time now and I've no plans build a new one any time soon (upgrading isn't possible, motherboard doesn't support anything beyond a 7700k). But... if I had gone X99 back then instead, that would have been a better move. Could now slap in an 8 core/16 thread CPU and get even more longevity. Plus more grunt for productivity tasks!
