Is betting the underdog considered betting against the spread? Or is it betting on whatever number is minus in the spread? For example what if the underdog team (Carolina) in the case of your example has a +3 instead of -3.

You got it right: against the spread means betting on the underdog with the points.

This is a really good video. However, math sometimes makes me feel dumb. I just have one question... when placing a bet on a team with - X.5 or X.5 as in the example on the video, why does the team with +3.5 all of a sudden cover the spread when 14 - 11 is a flat 3? This also brings me to my next question of how to determine which pick is the best with these types of spreads when looking at the spread lines that sports books put out ?

I understand the difficulty. That seems to be why I get so many views! In this example, 14-11 you want your team to win outright, not tie. Take the final score of the 11 and add the +3.5 points of the spread and look at the score again: 14-14.5. That means you win the bet. If the spread was only +3, then your final score would be 14-14, which is a push, meaning your money is returned. That is not a great outcome, but better than losing. Likewise if you had taken the 14 point team to win and had the spread -3.5 you would lose because after you subtract the 3.5 points from their score it is 10.5-11. If the spread was -3 it would be a push. Next time you are confused, write down the final score, and add or subtract the spread from the team who you bet on. After doing this a couple times you will get the hang of it.

I still don't know what against the spread means. Say I think team B will win. Do I bet the + number or the - number, which is the number my team has?

So if you think Team B will win and it says "Team B +5" it means you take Team B's final score and add 5 to it. In this example, if Team B wins, you win. Also, if team B loses by 4 runs, you still win. Inversely if the number is negative, you must subtract that number from the teams final score then evaluate if that team would still win.

Hi great piece by the way so is this correct then if the bet is say Oklahoma thunder v rockets and och lose by 1 point but I bet them +5 to cover does this mean the bets a winner ?? need to clear this up

Yes, you are the winner. Take the final score, add (or subtract) the points in the spread then look at the score again. If the team you added (or subtracted) the points from still is winning then you are a winner.

Well if it was this weekends game the spread was -4, which would mean if they win by 4 it is a push. You need to win by 5...they certainly did not, though. ;-)

As you unfortunately know by now, that is a losing bet: after subtracting the points you get 22 - 19.5. At least you had the side right ;-)

I placed a boo-boo bet, on the Cardinals/Vikings game, week 6, 2018. I bet Cardinals at +10, as the underdog....I was supposed to get Vikings, straight up. To I win if the Cardinals lose by 10+ points, or only by 10 points.....and if the Cardinals win, regardless of score...do I still win?

Hi Diane, bad news: your bet means you take the final score and add 10 to the Cardinals score. It means that you need the Cardinals to be within 10. If the Cardinals win outright you still win.

Yes it is. A long shot would be +7 points in football. For hockey it is generally +1.5 goals BUT the odds change so it would also be +120 or something. Basketball would be around +10.

This video isn’t realistic. The favored team always has a negative point spread and the underdog has positive. Not like this video where you’re giving points to an already favored team.

Hi Jennifer. I think you may want to watch again. The negative team is the favorite team. They are better so to make the bet fair they must win by more for the bet to pay.

I see the confusion now. The odds on the board there are against the spread odds, not moneyline. Odds on spread bets do move without the point spread moving. You may end up with negative spread odds with a positive point spread. Because 3 and 7 points are important in American football the book will hold the line on the spread but adjust the odds as the money comes in.
