I had a very friendly little grey Fox and her mate in my back yard for several years. She would sit on my back porch until I got home from work, and gave her a cup of dog food. She would also take a break from tending her babies and lay down beside me when I sat on the porch. She always rewarded me by bringing her babies into the back yard for me to admire. It was such a joy to be a part of her life.

Back between 1996 and 1998 we had a Vixen who decided that she preferred the company of humans. Her mother was the Alpha holding the territory and we used to leave her food. Our Vixen was the curious cub who was fascinated by the "Bringer of the food" namely my father. So when her mother suddenly died of illness she became the new Alpha and decided that she was going to live in both the wild and domestic world. My father would go for walks with her, she'd sit outside with him, jump up on him to greet him and act just like a domestic dog except she slept all day in her den nearby. One summer she disappeared for 2 weeks and returned with 5 cubs, which she left with us to look after (her family as far as she was concerned) whilst she went next door to sleep in a neighbours garden (they fed her too). Wild Fox cubs, just like puppies, are into everything they can bite, chew, sniff or pee on. The house and what was in it was especially of interest to them. A few weeks later she was dead having trod on the 3rd electric rail on the line out the back of us. She was badly burnt and died crawling back into our garden. We continued feeding the juvenile Foxes but they were totally wild and soon left. My father missed her the most as she was like the family dog to him and she showed him a lot of affection.

He has a ton of dog food everyday and what ever the cats leave and the dog and also us. He has bought the cubs with him as well. We always feed him at night, if I go and sit in the garden he will come and sit with me and let me stroke him and rub his belly. Lol we have even given flea and worm treatment. He is such a handsome boy now, he has filled out and he has the most amazing shiny coat and puffy tail, I feel quite honoured that he trusts us and trusts us enough to bring the babies with him

You're doing more harm than good. They're wild, they need to rely on their hunting skills which only comes through practice. Not only that but you give them a false sense of security, coming near people is okay when it's totally unnatural. Instead of letting Darwinism guide life you're intervening and playing God. That branches out to everything, meaning you've now impacted that little forest floor rodent the fox would have killed...you've kept they Coyote pack from getting their meal of the fox. That branches out...and that branches out...etc.

From the research I've seen on making foxes pets (yes, they are tameable), it is very hard to get rid of the paranoia, even after several generations. I think it took something like two full generations to be amicable, and three to make them any bit suitable for pets. Those numbers might be off, but there was no way to teach the wild foxes new instincts. (Strangely, tail wagging is something that happens when they are fully domesticated, even without any contact with pet dogs.) The semi-wild foxes understood that the humans fed them and took care of them, but were still extremely nervous. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read about the study, only that it seemed like a trustworthy source. I don't even remember how long ago I saw it, but I do know that at the time, several people involved in the project kept foxes for pets afterwards, and it was implied that fox pets would become more common, as it was a rather easy thing to do, all things considered.

Javier I was taught to hunt from the day I could hold a gun in my hand and pull the trigger. I can also shoot a bow proficiently. That's a huge advantage for man, and I never saw the "sport" in it. The only 2 animals I ever killed were 2 squirrels. The last one was a goof with a slingshot, just trying my luck. I immediately regretted it. I've never intentionally killed an animal again (animals that dart into traffic can't be helped without causing an accident). I can hunt if I had to for survival, but as long as I can provide for my family, I don't see the need to kill. I always told my parents, "I'm going hunting," but would head off with a gun or bow and just spend hours in the woods. After you've watched animals in their routines or just playing, that curiosity leads to a respect for all life, no matter how great or small. On the other hand, I've seen some hunters who will bag their legally allowed quota of game, only to give the meat to families who are struggling to put food on the table. These guys don't have the money to donate food, but they have the skill to hunt and feel like they're doing a good thing. In my area, hunting's the states way of animal control. You can't drive to town or to church without seeing 4-5 deer that have been freshly killed in traffic that day. So hunting's a way to cull the deer population so they're not out in the road causing accidents.

Yes great narrative voice indeed. I live in the Blue Ridge Mtns of N Carolina USA. We had a mama red tailed fox nest under one of our sheds. She gave birth to her 3 kits there and when they got big enough she would bring them out after dark to exercise a bit and we would hear their funny cackling noises. We have a big yard light on a telephone pole in the back by the shed. We felt privileged to watch them grow up. Before long mom would bring them out in the mornings and evenings while it was still daylight. Their sparse see through tails began to fill out as they grew. We put dog food and some scraps out for them. There was a creek below the shed for water. Soon the little buggers legs began to grow long and lanky. Mom skinned a rabbit one day while the kits watched. I think it was a show n tell on how to fix dinner. There is about 3 acres of rolling green grass between the neighbors house and ours. The growing kits had a great time running and rolling around together like kittens. Mom would sit at a distance and watch over them as they played. Sometimes dad would join her admiring their little brood. As fall was approaching mom would take them on into the woods to hunt but they would return for their after dinner romp. Our foxes are a furry red, have beautiful thick bushy tails with a white tip and they have black legs. Striking beauties they are. We almost felt like they were our domestic pets. One evening I was in the front yard and I saw papa fox trotting up the drive in front of the house. I just stood still and allowed my eyes feast on a the awesome sight before me. Papa fox was larger than mama and his thick fur coat just bounced as he trotted along. He looked at me as he went by.. I'll never forget that sight... as he looked at me with a wide smiling mouth and never slowed his pace... I could sware he winked with one eye. 😉 On the other side if the creek was a pasture with horses. The grounds keeper would mow with a large tractor before winter. The neighbor's son told me his dad shot and killed a fox that was running behind the tractor mower. My heart sank and I gasped in horror. Why.... oh no... why??? Because of peoples ignorance about foxes they think they are dangerous. Maybe the childhood story of Little Red Riding Hood has something to do with it. Or perhaps the man just likes to shoot and kill things. I know he paid someone to kill a black bear that got into his garbage. Black bears are not dangerous either. And we wonder why our wildlife are endangered species. 😥😢😪

A few years back I was in the right place at the right time with my Nikon to get some great closeup shots of a young fox pup at the edge of a city park. It was totally curious of me and spent about 7-8 minutes in my vicinity about 10-15ft away. I had a 200mm lens on the camera and got some really nice detailed shots while it pranced around, laid down, paced back and forth...all curiosity. Still cherish those pics of the random encounter...foxes are amazing. Thank you for caring for yours in the neighbourhood - and great video, too.

Who in their right mind would fear such a lovely creature, I reckon people who fear foxes probably fear their own shadow too. We have foxes in the garden and they get on fine with our cats, they just ignore each other! One of ours will let you get right up to it and the other day it ate out of my hand, what fox could resist a tasty bit of fish? It did nibble my finger but it knew I was not food and did not bite.
