[Verse 1] So as you canyoneered from our world upwards And the angels took their place I was the loser at your funeral And no emotion conveyed It was drawn out in vain And the idiot I am just figured In the wake of your leave That I'd never hear from you again [Pre-Chorus] And that I'd sing With all this feeling That your spirit would afford me [Chorus] My hand On heart It's not a thing that I've been dreaming of And it goes without my blessing And leaves me in a rut But it comes and goes And shows me all I'm missing And it comes and goes [Verse 2] I was there at the backstage trying But the words, they never came And I was available for a statement but I just Hung my head in shame It felt nothing to me All the ceremony I'd wasted And then I'd thank them and leave And say, "God bless you all, goodnight" [Pre-Chorus] And then I'd think The grave was turning And that nothing would absolve me [Chorus] My hand On heart It's not a thing that I've been dreaming of And it throws me without warning And leaves me in the dust But it comes and goes And fills me when I'm empty Then it comes and goes And I will need it when it's gone [Bridge] It quakes And moves Then breaks Then shatters over me In shapes of all these Quiet sacred things I need [Chorus] My hand On heart If there's a line or something in these songs That are worthy of some mention You're free to let me know But it comes and grows And leaves me in my weakness And it comes and goes My hand On heart It's not a thing that I've been dreaming of And it goes without my blessing And leaves me in a rut But it comes and goes And holds me when I'm sleepless Then it comes and shows How I need you when you're gone

The lyrics really conveys how I’ve usually felt during funerals and there ceremonies. Lifeless. Drained. My mind out of focus during the whole thing. I’m sad, but I’m calm and collected. It’s only after the ceremony and I don’t see them there anymore, that it really hits me. And I can’t stop the tears from flowing in. That’s how I feel I’ll be during my cats funeral. He’s pretty old for an outdoor cat, but he’s always been one of my best friends ever since I’ve gotten the chance to know him. Needy, but friendly. Loves being pet and headbutts your hand when he wants more. A VERY loud purrer. And always mainly hangs out with me. When I’m outside he’ll walk with me. He only ever hangs in my bedroom when I’m home at the time. When I’m away he never touches it. It’s weird that a cat could make me feel this way as I’ve always felt like a dog person, but I guess I’m just an animal person in general. Maybe I’ve just met a really extraordinary cat. When that day comes, I’ll miss you Ziggy. And I’ll reminisce about this song. but nows not the time for tears me!! God he’s still alive rn keep yourself together!! 😅💀

My dad passed in 2019 and this album is heartbreakingly relatable. Gang of youths music has always been special to me in a lot of ways. The cover of Both sides now I was listening to a few days after he died, and my mum told me that it was the only song he managed to learn on guitar and played it for her. They were long divorced when he died but it was a small insight to his younger self.

Song makes me feel like I still deserve to life happily while the grief of a tragedy comes and goes. Like I dont have to stop and figure it out, just accept it for what it is and move with it. Top tier song writing right there.

Well put, man. I lost both my grandparents within a couple months of each other this year. The grief comes, hits me, and makes me thankful to have people I could love so much. It’s a wild ride, but like you said, this song helps put words / imagery / feelings to this human experience

btw - the clip is a remake of Fred Astaire singing the song “Singing in the Rain”…and singing in the rain is a metaphor for acknowledging sadness though not letting it take you over, which is what this song is about. It’s a staple topic for pop music - though it has to be said, this particular song does it the best I’ve ever heard. And I’ve been an avid music fan for 54 years.

The film clip is gorgeous - aesthetically it’s just beautiful to watch, the movement and feeling, the joyousness of it all. But above all, the lyricism. As per usual, nothing less than absolute perfection from you guys. I have listened to ‘in the wake of your leave’ and ‘tend the garden’ probably a hundred times each and I can’t get enough. The storytelling is so beautiful and painful, yet hopeful. It is a revelation.

Love this song. Lost my father several years ago now and for a while thought I was fine but these things take their own time to consolidate. Quite a young age for the singer to lose his father as well and from what I've read he was a complicated person with puzzles to solve, resolve and absolve. Love the "singing in the rain" throwback look of the video as well. Best album I've heard in quite a while to boot and as a 54 year old don't get to say that too often these days.

I first found GOY through an old best friend who I loved and still love just in a different way. The first album that hit me hard was "GFIL" and I felt like it understood my internal struggle with God and life and love. So everything really. When "AIR" came out, I liked it but I couldn't grasp it in a way that I fully understood it because I was still in my "GFIL" stage, if that makes sense. My mom died 8 days ago and when I listened to this album again, it was like I heard it for the first time with new ears. Thankful for this band, thankful for this music.

The great strength of this band (one of its greatest strengths anyway) has always been in conveying what it feels like to feel joy after feeling despair and feeling found after feeling lost. In a class I took in college once my professor explained that the difference between a psalm of praise and a psalm of thanksgiving was that a psalm of praise had gone through the shadow of the valley of death and that's what this band is to me.

I grew up in the 80’s, raised on that music as well as the 90’s. Sounds a lot like stuff from that era. Not putting it down, it’s a GREAT song. But it’s funny, if you live long enough, everything comes back around and you notice it. You’ll be saying the same thing one day and you’ll laugh. Good stuff.
