I was lucky enough to be in a TV production class with the Hughes brothers and I remember watching their homemade films in class. It doesn't suprise me that they were able to live their dream and become famous filmmakers. I just watched Dead Presidents and that film is really underrated. Its good to see filmmakers willing to take risks and make stories that don't always have a happy ending. We need more of this type of risk in todays Hollywood movies.

The casting choice was _perfect_ for O-Dogg. If they made him an obvious beef cake, that would've cheapened his character. Having him be this young, hot-blooded cat; _that's_ where the scare factor comes in. So much evil coming off of a person so small.

I lived and went to school in Inglewood CA, 104th and Crenshaw with that Crenshaw Mafia Gang (CMG's). I knew dudes who rapped in Bangin on Wax. All the stuff in this movie is normal to the people who live it. What else do we know until we get out. Kaine never found out, and so many others I knew personally never found out. I got out at 22 after my brother in law and I saw a dude get domed across the street walking with Yogie. I didn't know him because he just got out that day. My girl literally just walked in the door before the shooting started. The movies became real and she was devastated, wanting me to explain. Explain why he laid out there for hours waiting for a coroner. I saw my first body at 7 and she grew up with a piano in her house that she didn't have to learn to play for church. Sheltered, trusting and oblivious. There's no such thing as street smarts to people who don't live the life.

Love Menace, it was one of the most real films from the 90s I'll never forget. I felt it represented poor minorities - not just black - but all the dynamics in the hood that people outside of it had no idea what it was like. Huge part of film history IMO. Side note: When the brothers mention Scarface as one of their inspirations, the video cuts to a shot from American Me, not Scarface.

So between M2S and BITH, which movie drove the ultimate point home? Both characters, Doughboy and Caine ended up dying right at the end of the movie. I feel like Doughboy had the hardest life..living in his brother's shadow, a mom that really did not care for him. Caine at least had two grandparents that tried to show him love, but it wasn't enough to match what he got running about with his friends. Both films do a good job of showing how non-nuclear families can have an affect on young black men. The higher voices in each film, Furious and Sharif, were very different. Furious was trying to teach by example, from experience. Sharif on the other hand was just preaching, but not doing anything to remove himself from people he didn't seem to agree with. I find M2S to be a great cinematic film that gives real insight to how a young black man can easily take the wrong path. I feel like with BITH, you're kind if watching it from the sidelines a bit more. With that said, I think Lawrence Fishburne's portrayal of Furious was one of the finest acting jobs on modern film for that great character. To this day, I still think there is a lack of roles being portrayed of black fathers who are doing everything they can for their children as Furious' character did.

I like both menace ll society and scarface how menace is about a couple young kids doing crazy shit in a Crazy hood while in scarface its a crazy chico in a crazy city and wanting power over it

If Tupac was in this movie it would have been consider the hood classic of all hood classics.. but since boyz n the hood has ice cube pop culture feels thats the best one. i still think menace is the best. when i first saw this shit as a kid i said no way they could air this shit with cousin harolds brains on the dashboard.

Bobby Manna tbf, MC Eight was in this. But, i agree if Pac was in this it'd have a higher rating.

Yeah people were crying shiet they probably just had several funerals to attend that year and last and some just got smoked last week...then it shows the good times ...the cook outs, the homie love, night outs , and just how fast it all gets took if caught slipping. no Time for school just money and surviving, and in Kane case like few of us.....trying to make it out....only like 1 outta 30 did w out dying.
