Another crucial contribution of Gannibal is not mentioned The recruitment and enlistment of Generalismmo Alexander Vasiliyevich Suvorov into the Russian military. The young Suvorov was frail and weak, and taunted by his father (A Russian General) and family friends (Russian nobility, military officers) that a military career was not cut out for the young lad. One day the young Suvorovs intense arguments with his father who refused to let him enlist brought him the attention of Gannibal who lived nearby. After conversing and finding an affinity with the young Suvorov, Gannibal convinced Suvorov senior and thus begins the career of one of Russia’s and indeed the Worlds greatest Captains of War Suvorov went on to fight 70 battles and win all of them, the latter battles were fought against the French Army just prior to Napoleons reign.

Minor correction; Suvorov didn't win all of his battles, but he was never defeated. Which is still an insane record to have. The fact that Gannibal, a fascinating character in his own right, is also linked to Suvorov, arguably the best military commander in history, is just about as cool as it gets.

In France, we have the same kind of family : lord Pailleté was the French father of général Dumas (a mulato, born from his black concubine). Dumas served alongside, and under Napoléon Bonaparte. Then Dumas had a son : Alexandre Dumas, who wrote The Three Musketeers ("les trois mousquetaires"). Alexandre Dumas's son, also named Alexandre (in french, we say "Dumas-father" and "Dumas-son" to distinguish them), was a famous writer too. =)

@Alex F It all comes down to societal views, as race is constructed depending on the culture. You can't really compare 19th-Century Russian views on race to American views. Hypo-descent was (and still is, to a degree) huge in Anglo-America, particularly where slavery was rampant, and having just a "bit" of African descent would designate you as part of the black underclass. Even racially-mixed people who looked white were still labelled and discriminated against in the South. In Southern Laws all the way up to the 1960s, Pushkin would be considered an Octoroon/negro and be treated as such. Also a fun fact: Homer Plessy of Plessy v Fergusson fame was just as black as Pushkin.

Napoleon wouldn't have been half the legend if he had just chosen to use his inheritance to rot in bars and brothels and go on prodigal sprees. @@REgamesplayer I am pretty sure we agree. It requires both luck and skill. Without all those opportunities they probably wouldn't be where they are, but at the same time, if you gave me all the opportunities Napoleon had I wouldn't become Napoleon. Extreme success is when hard work meets opportunity. Gannibal could have just not payed attention and not chosen to learn and maybe he would have just gone back to being a slave boy. In other words we agree. It requires hard work combined with the opportunity of which you speak.

Add Thomas-Alexandre "The Black Devil" Dumas and Joseph Bologne, "The Chevalier de Saint-Georges" to your list of people to read about in the future. ^_^ The former was a military man of such caliber he made Napoleon look like an insecure fool, and the latter was basically what would happen if Mozart was as much a virtuoso in kicking ass with a sword as he was with a violin. (In fact, Mozart's music might have been partly influenced by his.)

The fact that he not only survived in but *thrived* in a small Siberian town is so impressive... And yeah, dude could have gone back to Paris then for sure - but stayed in Russia and was rewarded 2 years later with returning to Moscow. Props to Peter the Great, what an eye for talent! This definitely deserves to be a movie... A historical epic/drama filled with just about everything, a chance for multiple talented actors to play Gannibal throughout his life, a chance for an S-tier actor play a career-defining role as Peter the Great... Would be a box-office hit for sure and would be fair, honest and sincere story to inspire black (and other) people around the world - not some forced diversity or racist bullcrap.

There is even a ridiculous conspiracy theory that Pushkin WAS in fact Dumas, i.e. he faked his death in the duel, escaped Russia for France, assumed the identity of a half-African French guy of about the same age, and kept on writing novels in French (as a Russian aristocrat of the time, of course Pushkin spoke French at a native level). This is a joke, of course; I don't think even people who had invented it, believed in it seriously. But the facial semblance of the two authors is striking, and the first Dumas' novels started to appear not long after Pushkin died, so who knows…

If you start running out of these stories of historical figures of African descent in unexpected places you could look up Polish nobleman and general Władysław Franciszek Jabłonowski "Murzynek". Also, regarding the XVIII century military engineers with interesting lives and careers, you could probably make a whole series about Tadeusz Kościuszko (like the ones about Tecumseh or Cochrane). Interestingly Kościuszko's story also has some little-known elements linking it with the "Black History", like his abolitionist views and the issue of his unrealized last will, the person of Agrippa Hull who served under him during the American Revolution or his butler Jean Lapierre (the aforementioned Jabłonowski was also his subordinate).

If you inspect history closely you will notice a pattern of rulers employing gifted foreigners such as Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, Gannibal Petrovich, Eugene of Savoy, Yasuke, Harald Hardrada, El Cid, etc.. In my opinion there are 3 reasons for this: 1. These people were all talented leaders. A good ruler always appoint the most talented personal. 2. These people were not members of the established aristocratic families. They didn't "inherit" centuries old feuds. They didn't resort to nepotism. 3. They owed everything they had to the ruler who elevated them into position, so their loyalties were guranteed. (ofc some of them betrayed their masters)

@@paulkoulikov no, white Kremlin was a different fortress, built of white (gray) stone. It lasted from XIV to XV century. Teo Danko You’re right that’s how it was built. At least in 19th century it was white, and that’s the time when we get most of our pictures of it from. So it’s assumed that for the most it’s history it was white like other brick fortresses. Another thing that adds to confusion is that word “Red” also meant “pretty” in those times.

I wonder how many remarkable, even quite heroic stories that aid the progress of societies such as this we have not heard of. Much has not made mainstream histories and should be told to inspire people, going forward. Diversity makes societies stronger because there are more creative ideas; his life (one of how MANY...) shows that! Cause the history you learning in school not a History, World History, or History of Society Evolution. It's actually "History of your country" and "Historical world dates and people names which you could hear later anyway", just opinion of government or Propaganda. You literally must not know anything about world that doesn't support you country government point of view. Same for your teacher: "Not allowed to know". Lessons should make you proud of your country and being a part of your society not a kosmopolite. Or how would they rule you if other countries wouldn't be a far mysterious, barbarian enemies. The same thing happens in any country. For example we in Russia didn't learn every single USA presidnet, how many dynasties were in China, who was certain premiere in UK at a time, or idk even what else i shouldn't know. Literature that you read in scholl, science etc. aren't the same. Every country have position "We are leaders! We are powerfull! We are good! And we must rule the world!" kinda. )

Nobunaga and Peter were very similar in character: --They both had bratpacks when they were kids composed of other children from varying ranks of society from nobility to peasantry. Those kids also followed them as adults as their comrades-in-arms. Nobunaga dressed like a bandit, hung out and drank and wrestled with peasants; Peter dressed like a common sailor, hung out and drunk with shipwrights and builders. (I also love that one of the things he requested from his mother as a gift was a lot of rope, because he and his friends were trying to build a toy navy on a lake and they ran out of rope.) -Both were innovators with a deep fascination for the West and its wealth of knowledge and technology. -Both were known to be impatient, impulsive, and very eccentric. Neither had patience for long-drawn out ceremony, and little respect for traditions that they thought got in the way of what they saw as progress--they also promoted people in their employ based on ability instead of birthright, both of which pissed off other nobles. They could also both be extremely brutal to their foes...although given their positions it's somewhat understandable. -
