How much insulation do you need for a garage conversion?
As part of this progress update on the garage we're converting in Werrington, Stoke-on-Trent, John will give you the answer.
He'll also describe:
🔵 How you can adequately ventilate the roof of your garage conversion if it doesn't have breathable felt
🔵 How to use box work creatively when you still need to access pipes etc. inside your garage
🔵 How to retain headspace if you have a pitched roof on your garage
🔵 How to give your garage roof more strength using 'hangers'
🔵 Why you should include a patress wherever you intend to hang something heavy, like a radiator.
The next stage of this garage conversion will be insulate the studded walls and ceiling/roof; create the doorway leading to the house; and then plaster and paint the walls.
Stay tuned for the final part of this short series and we'll show you the finished conversion.

Really interesting video and learnt so much as I’m planning on converting my garage later in the year and it’s good to know the regulations. What size cls are you using for the wall and rafters?

Hi Chris. Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching our video. We used standard 3x2 (38mm x 63mm) for this particular project. We would, however, advise that you speak to your Building Inspector before doing a project like this because Building Regs changed on 15th June 2022 and the rules are now different. Hope that helps, buddy. Thanks again for tuning in 🙂👍

Excellent video, just a question on the stud walls you've made I've seen other videos put damp membrane on the back of the frame is this required it seemed a bit overkill. I assumed it was because of it being a single skin wall but so are the ones in your video. I am new to this sort of work so I'm just researching before I start a garage conversion. Cheers

Hi there. Thanks for your question. You don't need to put DPM on the back of the stud wall frame. You do need to make sure that the stud wall is independent from the existing wall i.e. it doesn't touch it. You can put DPC underneath the the timber frame to prevent water getting into the timber. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching our video. We truly appreciate it 🙂👍

Great video thank you. What do you do about insulation around the patress? Does it go behind?

Thanks for your kind words, Mark and for watching our video 😀👍 In short, the answer to your question is yes, the insulation would go behind the pattress.

Hi Margaret. Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching our video - much appreciated 😊👌 It largely depends where you are in the country as to the overall cost of the renovation. You can pay anything between £15k and £40k for a project like this.

Hi @@margaretrose8412. Yes, it's the rising cost of materials and labour that has bumped up the price, particularly after COVID.

Nice to see a really good explanation! Walls. Is a vapour barrier required (insulated plaster board does this?). What is depth of gap between wall and stud wall? And that gap not ventilated in any way? If just wanting to make garage warmer rather than habitable space, would it be same wall construction or could studs be attached to wall without gap?
@HYPEBuilding
@HYPEBuilding Жыл бұрын
Hi Charles. Thank you for your questions. The depth of the gap is approx. 50mm. It is ventilated because the roof is ventilated i.e. the gap goes into the roof, which is ventilated with the soffit vents. You would use the same wall construction even if you weren't creating a habitable space, because if you didn't, you would risk thermal bridging. Hope that answers your questions. Thanks so much for watching our video and your great feedback - very much appreciated 🙂👍

Thank you. Appreciate you taking time to reply. And vapour barrier?
@HYPEBuilding
@HYPEBuilding Жыл бұрын
@@charlespaterson3038 Sorry, Charles. Yes, you're right. The insulated plasterboard does act as the vapour barrier in this particular instance. This is not always the case, however, as it can be different in different scenarios 👍

Does the timberwork, insulation and plasterboard help prevent damp? If yes, do you need to heat a room to prevent the damp? As you might guess I have a damp problem. I tried adding insulation to the floor and screeding over the top but it still causing some damp. I have a big ventilation hole at the top. I hate damp. I cannot understand it. Ive given up on my cellar and my shed is a nightmare, now my garage is not good either. Please save me

Hi there. Firstly, thank you for watching our video. Secondly, we'll happily try and help but we need to understand where the damp actually is. Could you please email and label some photos to askme@hypebuilding.co.uk so that we have a better idea? If you also email your name and contact number, John will call you when he gets chance 👍 Back to your question: the answer is yes. The timber, insulation and plasterboard is designed to prevent damp. However, warming the room without the correct construction could actually cause damp or condensation. John will explain in more detail when he calls you. Hope that helps.
