@@richardlinares6314 This dude is a pro and has done it hundreds of times. I myself was able to repair my garage door, thanks to this content. And guess what? The tracks on my garage door were fine. Tight enough to stop the door from coming down is nowhere near enough to 'screw up the tracks'. He says to put a vice grip on BOTH sides of the door so the weight is distributed, which again, means that you don't have to be clamped down all that hard.

Great video but I can’t figure out how you attached the comealong to the cable when the cable runs vertically. If you do another video the cameraman should take close up shots of exactly where to hook up the come along.

That is why so many people have replayed that portion of the video. Someone should have "proof" viewed this video before posting and they would have recognized this ahead. Too late now; and, people are commenting negatively on this video for the same reason over and over. It could have been prevented.

I DIDN'T NEED COME-A-LONG AT ALL? I just replaced a bent panel that was the second on from the bottom. Below are the steps I did and I thought it was super easy:) 1) Put vise grips on bottom rollers. 2) Took bolts connecting broken panel from the above 3rd panel up. 3) Pulled cord to release garage door and pushed the two upper panels all the way up. 4) Unbolted the 2nd panel from the bottom panel and took broken panel off. 5) Bolted on New panel to bottom panel 6) Lower down upper two panels and attached bolts from new panel to 3rd panel and done:)

yeah, I've got to replace my 2nd panel also, and was planning on doing it exactly like that, but thought I'd go to KZfaq university just to make sure I'm doing it right. Saw Mr "Hide and go seek" here with his comealong, and made me wonder what the heck he's doing? Still no clue - how do you jack up a comealong, but the item goes down?

thanks for the video. it's helpful. without the come along tool, it would just take me longer but what i would do is take out all the spring tension and just remove the panels from top to bottom until i reach the panel that needs replacement. longer process but then i don't need that special tool that i would use once in 20 years (when i ruin the panel because one cable snaps and bends the panel).

Good point. The easiest way to remove the tension from the spring is to pull the disconnect cord while the garage is all the way open. You prob need someone to help you lower it because the door is very heavy when lowering it manually. Then disconnect the panels you want to remove, manually lift the panels above it, placing vice grips or screwdrivers to prevent the upper levels from heading back down.

I was thinking the same thing, just remove the tension spring. Although you do need a "special tool" to tighten the spring back up. By the way the special tool to tighten the spring is just 2 round bars

I think you could grab the spring bar with vice grips and wedge it against the door header to keep the spring from unraveling.

Is it absolutely necessary to use the "Come Along" to remove the panel. I have very simple Clospay aluminum door .I don't own a come along and don't think I would use the tool very much could you pry the doors apart and put a lenght of wood or something in between? I really want to do this. I have my panels but I don't want to pay an installer? What do you suggest? How much is a come along , anyhow? Thanks, bud!

Hi, I am replacing the bottom panel on my garage door. I was wondering about the come along you use. Is it a special kind? I'm confused about how to attach it to the cable. @@deniseolague9292 There are two things he is using a comealong and a cable grip attached to the comealong. He attached the cable grip do the door wire to offload the tension of the springs. So the comealong is acting like the door springs.

Go buy a single panel and have a professional install it. If they say you need a new door they’re up selling you/ ripping you off. Unless your door is old and don’t make them anymore.

Or skip the come-along all together. Just close the garage door. Then put your clamp on the track above the lowest roller. Remove the bolts/screws on the middle track you want to remove and use the garage door opener to pull the rest out of the way. Bob's yer uncle.

This is not a good practice on all doors. If the door has springs it's to help the opener lift the door. If the door is big or has insulated panels and is heavy it's a good way to bust the opener. If the opener could lift the door then why would it even need springs? Hmmmmm

@J M raising the door releases pressure. Lowering it adds to it. That's y it lifts easy... the spring aids in lifting..

Yeah, he had me until he mentioned the mysterious "come along" tool, which (1) I've never heard of, (2) seems to be a tool used by experienced garage door technicians, and (3) something mentioned at the very beginning of this otherwise helpful clip, making it more or less useless. ;-(

nobody wants to sell them, the installers all have a monopoly, they tell you it's too dangerous, it's a racket, I've been hunting for a Haas door panel for weeks. I'm trying to go through an installer now. The other hitch is they like to "discontinue" the models so you have to spring for a whole new door, it's a racket

No sectional panels shouldnt be welded, you can weld tracks, or maybe on piece metal doors or rolling steel doors. Maybe you can weld to repair cracks on sections but are not meant to be welded together.

Klein tools sells a cable puller. It's around $200 .. without the come along. Probably cheaper to hire someone to do it unless one expects to do this often.

Somebody likes to complicate easy things. Lift the door off the floor 1.5". Place 4 wise grips (2 are enough, 2 extra for safety) under rollers. Back-wind the springs two quarters and leave to winding bars inserted. Remove and replace whatever you need. Slowly wind back the springs and the door will travel 1.5" up to put tension in the cables. Done and give warranty.

I just love how his reasoning for getting a professional is "this might not be quite as easy as I make it look" (because removing bolts is that hard) and "it might not be easy to round up the tools". Sorry bro, I know how to use a ratchet and I have a Harbor Freight tools right down the street. The ONLY thing I can imagine being difficult would be finding a matching door panel.

I used to work for a small company, with about 15 techs in the field. There were always one or two out on workman's comp because shit happens when you're dealing with torsion springs. So you and your little smart assed attitude can go ahead and try to do it yourself. After you fuck it up you'll call me.

1. Shouldn't use those types of jaw vise grips. Should be the C clamp style vise grips. Those plier types will damage the track, and don't always hold with the contact surfaces you're clamping to. The C Clamp style vise grip will clamp to the inside of the track, pinching the flat metal surfaces of the inside of the track, ensuring a better fastening. 2. Who has a come-along and cable clamp like that? I do because I'm an installer/repairman. The everyday DIY guy does not. It's simple enough to just raise the door off the floor a couple inches, and clamp it so the upper panels do not roll down when removing a panel. Then, remove the necessary components to separate the panels, and then take some winding bars, insert into winding plug, and then lower the panels by pushing up on the winding bar, and insert the other winding bar into the next hole, letting it rest against the top panel to hold the cables limp. I would also recommend removing the fixtures on the top of the panel you are removing so a person is not fighting those hinges hanging down. On wider doors this is more of an issue.

joe prewitt Winding plug. You use a 3/8" round stock bar and use it to release on the spring tension.

The weight of the door is on the cable, suspended by a few hundred pounds of force from the torsion bar. Don't try this unless you know what you're doing. I've tried. It's really easy to get hurt.
