Nice job!!! But to fill in some blanks. You always set the left drum first, because when you tighten the set screws your drum will want to roll backwards. The right one will roll forwards. It’s just the law of physics. BTW I’m a 22 yr vet and have done thousands of spring jobs. Also you have what is called a high lifted door best to go with a jack shaft opener. Could you go with a trolly. Not without causing a lot of stress on your door. Your door will stay running better a lot longer if you stretch your springs.

I put my own Garage doors/ openers in myself also but I paid a guy to tighten up the springs a 100 bucks well worth the satisfaction of the unknown, broken arm poke an eye out or worse,I've just found your channel and have been binge watching your videos very impressed with the quality of work you do, so can't wait to see your finished carpenter skills, you are a Jack of all trades!! But can you weld if not I'm one up on ya ...LOL nice dude I really enjoy your children in some of your videos there so cute..you remind of of joe Mauer who retired from the Minnesota twins. Looks and demeanor if you don't know him look him up and show your wife she would agree with me .god speed.

WOW - the last time I installed garage doors was 25 years ago. It was much, much simpler and they are still working fine. The spring shaft was pre-assembled so I didn't have to worry about putting the spring marked 'L' on the right side and the one marked 'R' on the left (how asinine is that? wait, hopefully yours were made in China.) To wind the spring you used a drill motor to turn the included gearbox the correct number of turns just as you did manually. You didn't have to worry about the spring slipping and you could stop anytime if you needed to. The brand name was 'Clopay.' (But they're probably made in China too now.)

i know I'm a little late. this video is 6 months old, but for future reference instead of counting your spring revolution. the writing on them isn't there for nothing. as you turn the spring it makes a stripe on the spring. every stripe is a revolution. if the writing isn't there i use spray paint or a really good sharpy to make a line across them before i start. Great video and keep up the good work.

Nice work! I'm happy with my Chamberlain chain drives and I have much heavier wood doors, although with proper door springs that shouldn't matter. The MyQ internet control features are super handy and something I wouldn't want to live without. A few years back I did a tension to torsion spring conversion on my garage doors and that made a huge difference in my door operations. I used DDM Garage Doors as my vendor and I was really impressed with their pre and post sales support.

Have had a standard door opener- used 2-5 times a day for almost 20 years. Have had to replace springs two years ago, but not the opener.

Make sure whatever kind you go with to get the my Q app. After you leave the house you can look at your phone to see if you remembered to close the doors also if friends or family drop by when your not home you can let them in. Thanks for all the awesome vids very informative and detailed.

I have a JackShaft opener and think you will really like it. I like not having the track down the middle of the door. I would also recommend you add the battery back. It's really convenient if power is down.

I personally have Genie Screw drives on my doors, in 30 yrs of service they have operated flawlessly. Ten years ago I did have a spring break, no fault of the operator, and five years ago I had to replace a starter capacitor ($5) I am pleased with them. ;-)

I would say the Jack Shaft openers, cleaner look and doesn't clutter up that great looking metal work. You could also tie in additional LED lighting that comes on when the door is opened.

I prefer the electric garage door openers. Those gasoline powered ones don't always start right up in the winter. ;) You always make everything look so easy, Paul! Great vid!

I have a LiftMaster wall a jack With MyQ phone app. I appreciate the overhead room in the garage. The quietness and smooth operation is awesome. Plus I get a notice on my phone every time tho door opens and closes.

I have a conv. screw drive, conv. chain drive, and a jack shaft on 7.5', 8' and 12' doors. the jack drive is the best working.

Having installed my share of doors and openers, it boils down to two things: How Quiet and How Fast? It's been a few years since I was going doors and openers, so can't recommend either way. When I'm ready for new doors and openers, I'll weigh the cost against which has the best combo of Quiet & Quick for the money! BTW, your exterior spigots for water are going to give you issues in the winter. I strongly recommend the variety which drains the water out of the 1st 8-10" after it's shut off.

I put a jack shaft opener in at my last house and it was nice and quiet, but a bit slower. The speed did bug me from time to time when in a hurry, but overall very nice openers.

No doubt about it. I'd go with the jack shaft GDOs. They won't transmit vibrations to the ceiling and they will provide unobstructed ceilings so you can be quite creative with the lighting. They are more expensive, that's the downside but that would not stop me from doing it right the first time. I believe you would be kicking yourself in the end if you go with the conventional GDOs. You are doing an amazing job. Thanks for sharing.

I would go with the blue tooth/wireless jacks. I love mine. Very quiet and easy to operate. Also let’s you know if you left the garage open.

Lift master 2nd best beside the jack shaft makes a variable belt drive which is quieter than the jack shaft and it slows on up or down approaches I paid $560 4 years ago to have mine installed on an 18 foot wide door. but it was summer in Phoenix and i did not want to mess with installing it in a 145 degree garage

Direct drive wormgear driveshafts are good they are sturdy and quiet never heard of a jack shaft might be similar.

That's correct when I first started out working in my uncle's garage door company he recommended I take a paint pen and draw a straight line across the spring so if I got mixed up all I had to do was count the lines.

For draw bar type openers look at liftmaster wled openers. Really nice opener. For jackshaft openers look at the liftmaster 8500w or the new Genie jackshaft openers.

My neighbor had a shaft door opener - the whole neighborhood could hear when he opened and closed it. Many of the conventional commercial openers are very quiet and can handle heavier loads.

Nicely done! I put mine up before the days of internet. Everything I read said don't install them yourself, the spring will kill you. I sweated the spring winding and when I was finished I was like, "that was it?" Taking down the 1 piece was the bigger risk to life and limb. My opener is is a 30 year old craftsman which I've replaced the main gear once. Presafety eyes at floor level it's so old. I'd go with jack shaft for no other reason than carrying a ladder or something and not having to avoid the opener. Take the edges off the track supports/round over corners, I've caught those a time or two over the years.

You can add to the illusion of two swinging doors on the outside by running a length of 3/16 pin stripe tape down the middle of each door aligned vertically between the two handles. Just cut the tape at each section.

Just paid a garage door service to replace my broken spring, he talked me into doing both $330.00 Next time I’ll do it myself.Thanks for the information

It's recommended to do both when one breaks because the are only good for a certain amount of cycles. Meaning if one broke the other one will break soon. The $330 seems a little high. We do them for $200 all day. Also don't mess with springs yourself because they can kill you or cause serious damage.

Yeah, I think the Jackshaft openers are the way to go. Definitely more expensive, but I think I'd rather be annoyed with the price up front and enjoy what I bought for years and years, than be ok with the price up front and kicking myself for years and years.

I installed a Chamberlain belt drive which is amazingly smooth and quiet but may not work for your situation. I don't have experience with recent jack-shaft.. our old Genie screw-drive openers make a racket, but sounds like modern jack-shafts are quiet.

Most door installers dont like the jackshaft openers. I've been told that the openers need to have tension on them all the time or your cables can come loose and cause problems. One way to do that is to have the doors open not in a horizontal position but in a more vertical angle. Say 45 degrees. Look here on KZfaq and see for yourself

Do the Wall mount. Those overhead are noisy and take up too much ceiling space. Price a bit more but probably worth it!

Then he has to do 4 different types, Chain-Drive, Screw-Drive, Jackshaft-Drive & Direct-Drive. Luckily he has 4 doors so he can try one of each.

If you have Ryobi tools (I know) get the Ryobi Garage door opener. Why? Accessories! You can charge your power tool batteries on the garage door opener. In case of power outage the Garage door opener will draw power from the battery to open your garage door. Other accessories that you can attach to it -> fans, cord reels, bluetooth speaker, security camera, power inflator...

The overhead openers are pretty darn quiet nowadays. I wouldn't spend the extra money for the jacks if you can get a nice belt drive overhead one.

With his doors having lift jackshaft are the only one that should be installed on his doors. 8 years of installing and fixing doors experience but since this video is a year old guess I will have to see what he got.

Off topic Just Curious, BUT hows your shoes on the concrete floors. My feet just kill me after a day on concrete surfaces. I like the low cut style, Boots are too heavy and cumbersome to remove as I go in and out of peoples homes

Just some advice if you plain on installing Any more garage doors in the future get with a local garage door company and see if you can buy a set of winding bars those springs are no joke and it's better to have to proper equipment when dealing with them.

what happens when the center shaft support fails is that bracket is like a saw blade it cut the wood in half that supported it and put an 8" kerf in my sheet rock above it.

I have never seen that happen and I worked for a garage door company for 8 years. That's crazy.
