GarageBand's Piano's are trash. Here's how you can fix them.
There’s no denying that most of GarageBand’s built in sounds are pretty good. The stock steinway piano sound though... not so much.

The sustain tip is the best one, in my opinion. However, there’s a fourth tip I would add: the way you play the piano is the most important part (there will be a natural velocity variation and sustain; fx and other artifacts could have been used later). Or, grab the piano midi that’s already played in a natural way, you know...

Another outstanding guide! Another way to quickly get a more “human” feel on the piano is to use accents....quite simply, some notes are played louder than others For example, in a recent piano driven piece commissioned in the style of ADELE, my chorus piano was in solid 8th notes/quavers However, the chords I’d drawn in on my piano roll sounded flat, especially at the slow tempo To combat this, I highlighted the notes on the + of the 2nd beat, and the 4. Then I increased the velocity to taste. Automatically it sounded much more dynamic, excited and human! This is a quite common accent pattern, and we naturally experience the 1 of any 4-to-the-bar beat as emphasised, too! Any percussionists might recognise it as the 3:2 clave pattern! Then I also took the bass notes and gave them a quarter/crotchet and quaver feel on Beats 1 and 2. Often looking at how the bass notes interact with the chords - and you don’t need a lot of music theory to do this - rather than copy-and-pasting the root of the chord an octave down, goes a long way to making the piano professional sounding Add in your tips, and any of your subscribers will be well on their way to making their electronic Elton John a lot more lively!

Im a classical/jazz pianist composer and GB steinway sounds more AMAZING than i thought it could! i added %50 ambience %60 verb %40 delay (onboard effects).... golden.

I've taken to using automation to control velocity as well. You can swoosh away and play like at the behest of a conductor.

Thank you for the sustain tip! I use my digital piano with a sustain pedal to record but for whatever reason my pedal input doesn't get picked up properly so while I'm hearing a nice, clean performance while I play, the MIDI is all mushed and horrible but with this I can now fix it. Thank you!!!

Great vid. No piano or keyboard player (certainly not me 🤣) is perfectly in time like GB either. So adjusting timing a tick is another way to humanize not only piano but other tracks too.

I have an electric piano that sounds just fine, like a real piano with its own default sound, but when I use it with Garageband as a MIDI controller (has velocity and a sustain pedal), the sounds in Garageband are just awful no matter how I tune the settings :

Any tips for improving the sound of a really cheap piano? I'm recoding with a Casio-CTK 1200 in stereo while adding some reverb to it. But it still has that cheap, toyish sound that I hate. Would love to know if anyone have any tips for making it sound better!

If you already have a digital piano, don’t overlook recording its native sounds to an Audio track. An audio interface is required if you’re piano doesn’t come with one built-in. NOTE: Due to current chip shortages, Yamaha had to remove the audio interface from the P-125 and it’s now sold as the New Yamaha P-125a. However, using the 1/4” L & R Out jacks, you can still capture the native sounds with an external audio interface.

If you press Command + A in the piano roll all your notes will be selected at the same time.

Hi Pat, Nice video. On the Sustain tip I couldn't get the orange automation line to show. Im using Garageband version 10.3.5. Perhaps I don't have access to this facility on this older version of Garageband? Would you concur?

You may need to ‘create’ the automation line by clicking in the area where it should be first. Give it a try and let me know if that works

When automating piano sustain by hand, a good way to go about it is to emulate the actions of a real player on a real piano. Sitting at a real piano and using the sustain pedal, the player typically lifts their foot off the pedal on the "and" of the final beat of the measure, and pushes the pedal back down on the "1" of the next measure. So, lift at 3.5 beats of 4, push back down 0.5 beats later. Doing it this way helps to eliminate resonances from being carried over and sounding through when the next chord is being played. Such resonances are most often dissonant, especially if the interval is only 1 between the two chords. tl;dr - sticking to the technical fundementals of an instrument = glorious music

I do lots of synth wave music but since I play everything but the drums I always adjust velocity on keyboard notes. I usually go 'high notes say 100, mid notes 95 and lower notes 90. Makes my synth tracks sound slick ,ok I'm a bit OCD bit hey :)

I had to give up on GB because of the default piano sounds. I got stymied because I can't record my USB Yamaha keyboard on its own, just as a controller for the very limited GB keyboard sounds. I also bought an Akai MPK Mini, and of the three programs it comes with, only one works, with one producing an error message in GB, and the other not even recognized. I bought a ten slot powered USB expander also, and can't seem to get the Mac or GB to recognize more than two inputs. I screwed around with it for days, and I had to walk away! (and yes, I tried installing the latest drivers and uninstalling and re-installing programs) Ugh! I just had to vent.

@@flybynight1929 you need a USB to MIDI interface. M-Audio makes a few, some of which are pretty inexpensive - especially if you find one used (maybe like $10). Get an interface, then download some software to handle the exchange. MIDI-Pipe comes to mind..

So, it's not the piano itself that sucks. It's the input method. If you are playing on good MIDI keyboard and have a sustain pedal, these problems are non existent then
