The compressor is a mighty useful bit of kit, and enables your mixes to sound tough and powerful. Why?
In this film, I describe the main features of the compressor, together with a practical example of its use.
Don't worry too much about the figures and numbers - while they're certainly useful in some areas:
It's your ears that are the ultimate judge!
If it sounds "pumpy" and lifeless, the chances are that it's over compressed...

Thank you for another of your great videos. I get the concept of compression from my guitar pedals, but the more advanced features were pretty much lost on me. I didn’t turning something down to make it work more. Maybe now I’ll get a better result when I record.

You just taught me on a subject i have been having problem to understand. Very detailed and nice explanation on how the compressor work and when to use it. I noticed that you recorded "Clean", and applied the compressor afterward. Is that the way to do it, or can we have it in the recording state as well. Did i understand you correct on the gain control, that it may also bring up some "unwanted" noise as well? Also, except for use on vocals, do we have use for the compressor on instruments, both electronic VST's and electric guitars etc? or are these "levels" dealt with with the instruments settings? Thanks Dan for another great video tutorial! :) We really appreciate your work !

Hi David, glad you found it useful- yes, the make up gain does bring up unwanted noise, so there are recording considerations to bear in mind. Even with the plugins applied, none of them are recorded: they are only applied on playback. When using hardware, I tend to apply a touch of compression on bass, kick/snare and some other things, just to make the mix easier.

what is the difference between the Garageband compressor and the Apple compressor in the plugins

I think there’s a bit of difference, but it’s mostly the interface that’s different, and you can also set release time on the AU plugin, which you can’t tweak on the GB one...
