The Slinger from Rogue Fitness is their solution for a somewhat DIY-cable machine that attaches to your squat rack. We've used and reviewed many alternatives including making our own, but after using the Rogue Monster Slinger for over a year, I wanted to share my opinion on it.
In this Rogue Slinger Review, I'll detail what I like, don't like, and what I want to see Rogue Fitness do with it in the future. Should you add it to your home gym? Watch and see...

The band attachment option is particularly nonsensical you might as well just attach the band direct to a pull-up bar or rack cross member and save the $300. When this was first released that was the only option Rogue gave

Hey Coop ! Another option for resistance on the Slinger is to use a Rogue (or any other company's tbh) vertical loading pin (for grip strength) There may be some sway when you pull and use the Slinger, but it seems to be a more optimal option for attaching weight to the cables

Until the extended routing comes out for the slinger, not even the weight stack is a good choice because there are so few places to put it. You couldn't put it in a 4 post rack because you will no longer be able to use the inside of it (unless you have a half rack, I suppose). You can't put it in the front of a six post rack for the exact reason I just mentioned. So your only options are to put in in the back of the rack and float the rack in the middle of the room (obviously not ideal/possible for some people who don't have a lot of space), or flip the rack around so the 24" portion is in the front and the 43" is in the back. More people may be okay with that, but it still limits the functionality of the rack. I would love to see Rogue release a half-cave with one slinger for people who can't afford or can't fit a full cave.
@darrenfitzpatrick5331
@darrenfitzpatrick5331 3 жыл бұрын
Agree Coop. As far as I've been able to research, there is no great solution for a full functional trainer type options with a (Rogue) rack or any manufacturer. Even if you were to design a rack with extra components to accommodate the pulley and spend the money on all the bells and whistles that go with it, it's still sub-optimal. For instance, it would make sense for the new lat pull down seat to also have foot plates on the bottom so you can do low rows with the new low pulley but it doesn't. Furthermore, even functional trainers, like Rep, don't have a low row option on their functional trainer even if you could afford the cost and the space. Like you said, all good ideas but half-baked.

Hey Coop, Do you think the ML version of this would fit on the short 12" wall mount crossmembers of the RML-90SLIM rack? If I'm eyeballing this right and using the measurements Rogue has on their site, I come up with 11" of "mounting" length which should fit on that crossmember. I'd have to drill a hole for the cable to pass through but that's minor.

Coop, I was wondering if you could try mounting a Slinger to end of your Savage storage rack where it seems like nothing would get in the way and you wouldn't have any kind of safeties to move every time you use it. The issue I see is that the Fray racks don't use a flat topped I-beam so you would probably have to buy a Monster Lite version that is tall enough to get over the post and then use your spacers to adapt it to the 1 inch holes, but otherwise.. Would that work?

@roz77394

I think this is probably correct. I have the Slinger attached to my Rhino and it works fine. But the Surplus Strength high pulley doesn't require you to run the cable through an additional front-to-back crossmember, so you can just use the left-to-right crossmember that you will already have, and you won't have to worry about the cable running through the crossmember and potentially rubbing on the sharp metal edges.

Is there any reason you can't just use the slinger as normal in the front, have a second one further back (e.g., between the back two uprights of a 6 upright rack), and just make a DIY cable that's long enough to reach through both? It would allow for easier use of the plate stack from Rogue, or even using your regular plate-loaded system and keep it out of the way of the safety cross beams.

You mentioned the monster cave in this video. When they released that like a month or two ago I was extremely intrigued. I'm looking to upgrade (swap out more accurately) my equipment and the cave raised my eyebrow. BUT.... i saw the slinger. Yes you can get the cave with a lat pull down upright and adjustable pulley upright.... or two adjustable pulley uprights to make essentially a cable crossover machine. That's great if you don't mind unloading like $8,000.... and have 9.5+ ft ceilings because those latter two options are only compatible (for some reason.... I fail to see why they wouldn't work with a 90" rack) with 100" racks. So I'm pretty much relegated to the 90" cave with slingers. The slinger always seemed like good concept but wouldn't work that well/at all in reality.... like socialism, Haha. They then came out with it working with a weight stack which excited me, but then I thought about it for a couple seconds and realized that's a bad idea. That is unless you buy another upright and two crossmembers to attach the stack to pretty much making it more of an attached high/low pulley system to your rack instead of one that's more streamlined and integrated with the rack. To have the weight stack slinger work as advertised you NEED a 6 post rack. I have one, but still. Because in addition to the 6 post rack you NEED to have pretty much 360 degree access to your rack. Why? The ONLY way the weight stack slinger would work is in the space between the middle upright and the back upright... the crossmembers attaching the plate storage uprights. Why? Because the slinger HAS to be mounted right above an upright. If you put it on the front upright.... the stack would be blocking pretty much every hole in your power rack.... not to mention block off the entire side making benching and squatting pretty difficult. So it HAS to be on the back upright of a 6 post rack. Even then I wonder how great it would be if you use your 6 post rack to, you know, store your plates. The plates stick out beyond the back of the rack. With the slinger cable dangling right at the end of the rack I assume the weight plates you have stored on said back upright would get in the way. Not so much maybe for tricep work or low rows but definitely for lat pulldowns. I already have a hoist fitness high low pulley machine (with a chest press) so the slinger felt like an inferior option. What I really want is a functional trainer or actual cable crossover machine. The Cave seemed like rogues answer to that desire. Even with dedicated uprights for the slinger stacks.... and with their new hinged adjustable low pulley....... I still doubt think it will work how I'd like it to. In order to use the low pulley you have to attach an extension cable to the cable. If you set the pulley to the middle of the upright to do..... chest flys..... you couldn't. Well, you could, but somewhere in the movement you'll come to a halt because where the two cables attach will hit that adjustable pulley. Not to mention having the pulley set to the middle of the upright means you'll have feet (plural) of extra cable sticking out of the pulley. So you'd need to strand like 3 feet away from the pulley... at least. So while the cave looks awesome..... I don't think I'd like it. What I WISH rogue would do..... and why they haven't done this yet is beyond me..... is take their trolley system that designed for their jammer arms and engineer it to have a pulley on their. You could literally have an adjustable pulley system with that trolley. Throw in another pulley to attach to the bottom crossmember so you can weave a cable PROPERLY to convert your 6 post rack into a no shit power rack and functional trainer. It wouldn't be that hard to design. Why they haven't yet boggles my damn mind. All you'd need to convert your 6 post track to make the back of it into a functional trainer is an altered trolley containing a swivel pulley, a PROPERLY MEASURED cable, and a box of pulleys to attach to the rack to properly weave the cable through to attach to said trolley to make a no shit proper functional trainer. With the 2 weight stacks, pulley kit and cable, and re- engineered trolleys.... for likely a rogue price of $2500 you can convert your 6 post rack into legitimate functional trainer. I should work for rogue. Or some other competing brand. Doing what I said wouldn't be that difficult to come up with. You'd need the two trolleys with a swivel pulley on them... instead of a jammer arm attachment, about.... 10 pulleys, 12 if you count the one that'll be attached to the stack, and... the stack. Outside of slightly redesigning the trolley, rogue already makes/ sells all this shit. Just package it together.

I decided to go REP due to Rogue not really working a lot of things out for home gym builders. Plus, they NEVER answer my emails about technical questions. I wanted to by USA but really, iPhones are made in China so I guess my Rack can be as well.

I like Rogue, but this was a fail. They’d have been better off making a rack attached plate loaded system like REP. I bought a Spud Inc lat cable and two low row cables along with a few grip attachments. A little creativity with band pegs and I have a lat pull down, cable tricep/bicep and cable crossover all in one.
