Where did they learn the behavior from? It's curious to me that children who suffer sexual abuse fall into two categories. Male and female. Crimes committed by adult females are scrutinized for a history of sexual abuse as an excuse, justification, and defense. Interestingly, males who suffered sexual assault as children aren't acknowledged as victims. Example - Female teachers convicted of raping middle school-age boys are getting ZERO jail time. Basically, males can't be victims of sexual assault, doesn't scar their lives and they - unlike females - have no autonomy over their bodies. I'm soooo done with double standards.

I disagree. Why should the people pay for a person's room/board, education, medical, etc? 1 of 2 things should happen: 1. Take them to the Grand Canyon and toss them off the rim. That way they can become critter food and fertilizer. 2. Make them responsible for the victim's education, health insurance, life insurance, treatment, any and all hospitalizations, rent/house payments, etc. for the rest of the victim's life. Can you imagine that you get a speeding ticket and decide to contest it. You get before the court and it’s decided by the prosecutor, judge, & jury that we know you have been a habitual speeder most of your life so that will be factored into your sentence. Then instead of a quick early morning appearance in court to pay your penalty of a few hundred dollars and a tongue lashing from the judge you get 6 months in county jail and a $5000 fine.

How would have made it to adulthood without knowing they HAVE to and don't choose their cases as public defenders?? It's been very widely reported on. They risk being disbarred if they refuse the case just because they despise the crime or defendant and its extremely hard to get yourself recused.

If he has a public defender, they’ve literally got no choice just because they, too, find their clients actions disgusting and disturbing. Everyone has the right to a fair trial and lawyer in the US. Even Shanda Van Arks defense attorney said after the trial was over that this was one of the most disturbing cases he’s had to defend and he does not agree with his clients’ actions. He still had to defend her, though. &; give her a solid fair defense that was within his ability. Just because a defense council represents their disgusting client; does not mean that they are on board or condone their behavior and the horrific things they’ve done and are accused of.

The US justice system is based on the idea that each defendant deserves to have an attorney vigorously defend them, with the idea being that only then can you be sure that the system has worked (even though we all know instances of injustice). That's why we have public defenders so if it wasn't this attorney, it would be another. It's an awful position to be in like the judge here stated esp., as it sometimes requires you to say things that you don't personally believe, but someone has to defend the defendant, regardless of how disgusting and morally indefensible their actions are

There aren't resources for people without convictions. I watched a documentary where people couldn't get treatment in the US because they didn't have a criminal record. I watched another documentary on how other countries treat pedophiles and learned many go to Germany for treatment to keep themselves from committing a crime. In the US, people get access to the help they need after being convicted, not before. It's really messed up!!! All the heartbreak, trauma and money that could be saved if the government cared!

The tendency to find children sexually attractive is pretty clearly a disease... normal people just don't feel that way. It seems to be a wiring glitch in the brain. But that doesn't make criminal behavior any less a deliberate choice than it is for anybody else. People who are naturally attracted to women don't get to rape women, and people who are naturally attracted to children don't get to rape children -- not hands on, and not by proxy through the adults who make their pornography, either. Someone whose sexual desires run towards children has choices, other than dealing in child rape on camera. They can choose to be celibate. They can fantasize about whatever they want in the privacy of their own head, no matter how sick it may be, because that doesn't hurt anybody. They can get medical treatment. Their disease is real, but it doesn't make them helplessly unable to restrain their behavior toward children, any more than anyone else's being attracted to women or to men makes them helplessly unable to restrain themself around those people.

Your conclusion is correct but the premise, flawed. This (now convicted) S.O. is _clearly_ mentally ill, _and_ he also belongs in prison for his crimes. They can and will treat him appropriately.

@@VictheChick yeah something clearly has to be wrong to be attracted to this garbage, my point is more about trying to use the “disease” for a lesser sentence. I think that a s**ual add*ction is what the people are claiming. To put things like this on par with a chemical dependency really bothers me. The psychological need to do something doesn’t equate to the combined psychological and chemical need of more recognized add*ctions. The idea allows things like the Duggar case to happen. People can have issues, but where is the line? It can become a problem where a legal issue is shunted to a religious solution and that is something that I feel is wrong. As for the true mental issues going on, I don’t think this defendant sees that. The real mental issues have more to do with a true disorder than a tenuous connection to this add*ction. Maybe counseling can use that as a start, seeing what triggers the impulse sort of thing, but it has to divert and consider the wider picture and deal with all the aspects of this particular crime. That’s why I hold it is criminal first, only if the person somehow recognized they had these impulses before any sort of action and sought treatment would it not be criminal and therefore just be psychological. Sadly that’s rarely the case, as these people so often act first, worse yet only see the problems in their actions (if they do) only after being caught.

I believe the court system is set up to protect pedo's. There is no reason why a child molester gets less time than armed robbery, shooting a turkey out of season. The ALL re-offened because it is their PREFERENCE. Saw an interview with a prosecutor. She interviewed a criminal psychologist wanting the insight of these pedo's. The analyst asked her of she was a heterosexual woman. She said she was. He then asked he how long a treatment plan would take her to start to like women. She said there is no treatment that would make her change her preference. Her predisposition is to be attracted to men. No amount of therapy, drugs will ever change her preference. It is the same for child molesters. Their preference is children and will always be. There should be no second chance or freedom for these evil sickos.
