You typically don't get a whole lot of finesse with high-power hydraulics.
@robertschemonia5617 Жыл бұрын
@7McQueezY7 it also depends on the control system. If it is a hydraulic pilot control, you get instantaneous positive feedback from the controls. If the control system is electrical and uses switches and solenoid valves, not so much. Pilot control systems are far superior for control and "feel", but are very complex and expensive. Both to manufacture and maintain. These trucks likely have the electrical control system, not pilot.

@robertschemonia5617 Жыл бұрын
@7McQueezY7 right you are. But there is a huge difference between forestry machines and cranes, compared to garbage trucks. They dgaf about that much finesse when moving garbage cans. Could these garbage trucks be made to handle like other more precision equipment? Oh, absolutely. Are the manufacturers going to build them that way? Only if the customer is going to be willing for the increased price tag. They cheap out on a LOT of stuff on garbage truck bodies and control systems, and use that money elsewhere, like in AR500 plate steel for the hoppers, sweepers, moving wall, and lining the inside of the body, if you're lucky. Other than that, I have yet to see one that had any finesse whatsoever. But again, comparing garbage trucks to cranes is like comparing dog turds to diamonds. Yes, the electronic controls have come a long way. But, to make them work like that there is a LOT of monitoring, computers, extra wiring, and all kinds of stuff. I would put money on it that if those side loader trucks had a bit more finesse on the movements, they would be MUCH easier to use without making a huge mess. But those kinds of features cut into the bottom line, so there goes that, right out the window.
@robertschemonia5617 Жыл бұрын
@7McQueezY7 and to add, rather than edit, the simpler they are, the easier they are to fix and keep working. Electronic proportional control of hydraulic systems like that would be almost as far away from simple as you can get.

Where I live in TX, the trash company provides us with specially designed bins for the truck (kind of like what that guy had at 4:55 except ours are huge and alot tougher). It's big enough that you only need the one, so crowding isn't an issue, and their grabber is this hook that jabs under this two foot wide slot in the front of the bin. Idk if that's a good system, but they're really fast with it...like 5 seconds per stop with no exceptions that I've ever noticed. Where I live, things like public infrastructure and services have always been pretty up to date though, compared to most of the U.S.

@TruckMaster6422 жыл бұрын
I agree
@DarkVoidIII2 жыл бұрын
@@zorkan111 That is what the council or municipality in charge of the bin pickup route would like residents to comply with. Unfortunately they end up having to deal with stupid people who don't care to inquire about what they can put into their bins, and as a result, the garbage truck designer has to over-engineer the compactor mechanism to compensate for residents that don't think to check what should go into their bins. Metal object up to a certain size can actually be quite easily compacted, this is only due to the over-engineered compaction mechanism, and was never intended to be that way. It's easier and simpler for the authority involved to use compactors that will just compact the garbage, this is why most American compactor mechanisms use a large capacity blade or wall compaction mechanism, to simplify things and allow larger oversized objects to be pushed into the back. If designed correctly, the truck still stuffs the offending item into the back of the truck, to the point where it will fall out with the rest of the load. Most garbage is fairly easy to compact and some of it can even break apart if pushed against a rigid object, thus ensuring it goes through the compactor. It's when they have too much rigidity that problems happen, and the truck driver has to return to base to get oversized objects removed from the compactor body. Some compactors are so strong they will quite easily bale metal objects in garbage. Most don't. I will point out that it is on the authority governing the pickup requirements for the resident's bin to ensure that this is adequately policed and adequately monitored. Residents, most of the time, simply don't think, this is because they don't have the time to do it properly. Fines and retraction of bin services can help with this but mostly it's a matter of which contractor will have the equipment that will be able to handle heavy and difficult to compact trash items. It's a competition to find which contractor wants a really trashy contract!

That's probably a big difference from country to country then, because back in the days, when it was all manual in my city (in The Netherlands), bins from a certain residential number of homes would be grouped together at a certain spot in the area, where the truck would stop and get all of them emptied in one go. But the workers would always put them back nicely packed the way they were before they arrived. The bins are still grouped in specific areas, but now all in one line, so the side-loader can easily grab them. Same as in the outer areas, where bins would be placed roadside: no matter automatic or manual collection, they would be put back where they were found. Especially the operators of the side-loaders in my city are good at putting them back at the kerbside, just centimeters where they picked them up from. It's more of a necessity here, as Dutch roads/streets are by far not as wide as most in the US.

Yeah, I feel the same way about the grabber as well. It looks complicated (especially when bins are too close together) and judging by the fact a bin even falls in (which is such a rarity in my country (Netherlands) that I don't even know of a video of it and you usually get a letter from the city council stating that 'the truck unfortunately ate your bin. Within 2 days, someone from the city council will bring you a new one') Ours grab the bins at the ridge beneath the lid, and once they have hooked onto that ridge, a small arm rotates over the ridge, completely securing the bin to the arm, which also enables the operator to whack the living daylight out of a bin if they see (on CCTV) that some refuse is stuck inside the bin.

It varies by region, but a single driver with the lift system is becoming the most common to prevent the driver from having to get out of the truck and risk getting injured. Some places still have a driver and 1 - 2 people on the back who manually lift and dump trash into the truck.

I feel like the truck is saying FML more than the driver the way it's arm aggressively grabs those trash cans 😆

Haha I woke up early the morning I loaded a garbage can with dirt and concrete chunks from my basement floor. It was a house I had out of state and didn't have any other way to take it to the dump before mixing and repouring it all by hand. The can had to weigh 600 pounds,I'm not sure. Probably more, I've shoved around a 600 pound generator and it wasn't as bad as that can. It took all of my 160 pounds to even get it to tilt and move. I never saw a garbage truck pitch over like 4-5 inches and hear the hydraulics grunt when picking up a can before 🤣🤣🤣 Dude didn't even blink, dropped the can and moved on.

Our trash is loaded in a dumpster in FRONT of the truck which I always thought was silly cause turning is harder unless they put the dumpster up. But after seeing these videos Im glad ours isn't the side loader...how do companies expect their employees to get the trash that drops or the heavy items that doesn't fit in the trash can?? That's gotta suck trying to throw it up there and the bag breaks...who wants that?? I didn't realize the bull$hit the side loader employees had to deal with. I applaud their work!
@weeardguy Жыл бұрын
It completely depends on the side-loader. The ones in my city in The Netherlands do a far better job at handling overstuffed bins and certainly don't use such a complicated grabber. Ours grab the bins by a ridge underneath the bin, where hooks have to be positioned. Once positioned, the arm is slightly lifted, and a small arm rotates over the ridge, securing the bin to the arm. Than the bins are brought up into the air, where they are first brought up into the air perfectly vertical and only rotate at the very last moment (and at quite the speed which prevents an overstuffed bin from losing its contents). Once at the opening in the truck where everything is collected, they whack 'em pretty violently. Multiple CCTV cameras control the area around the truck but also look right inside the bin to check if refuse got stuck or not. It is then placed back on the kerb and usually done at such a speed they even manage to close the lid ;)

@@weeardguy yes, that would be cool! 🙏🏼 I did poke around KZfaq a bit & I had no idea you also have these gigantic massive communal bins where they use a crane to lift out of the ground! this is so fascinating to see what other countries do!
@weeardguy5 ай бұрын
@@udance4ever Yep ;) When I was working in Amsterdam, it once happened that something either fell into the concrete 'bunker' the bin sinks into or one half of the bins' bottom opened up while it was re-inserted again: it got stuck about 50 centimeter above ground. The operator of the crane lifted it slightly and let it sink with a bit more speed, to only see it get stuck at the same point again. He lifted slightly higher and used a bit more force, to no avail. He than lifted the thing almost completely and basically let it freefall while connected to his crane. No luck, but he had a huge grin on his face ;) . Especially all the differences in how those underground bins are emptied strikes me: some have 3 loops (like the ones in my city) that attach to the crane, with 2 loops just for lifting it, while the 3rd (middle one) is used to control the opening and closing of the bottom. Upon retracting the thing from the ground, all 3 loops extend something like 60 centimeter and the middle one is than lowered to open the bin up and close it again after emptying. Those in Amsterdam use a different, unidirectional system: a cilindrical pin with multiple ridges sticks out from the bin and (very likely) controls opening and closing in the same way as the ones in my city. And I have seen another system as well, but can't remember what it looked like.

Wow I never realized until watching this why I should have some respect for those guys. Wouldn't hurt to actually follow the rules about distance and placement of the trash cans and not over load them. Also wouldn't hurt to maybe give them a tip or Christmas card with a few $$ in it.

I have to pay $200 in garbage fees every quarter, and I have to pay $29 to throw away ANYTHING that doesn't fit in a bag. That means I have to pay $29 to throw away my $8 rake that broke. And you think I'm giving these guys a tip? You're out of your mind.

I left a tip once for my driver who would wave each week if we saw each other. The day I left it, a different guy was doing the route. He grabbed it, pocketed it, and never once looked over (I had just pulled into the driveway and gotten out of the car) or said thanks.
