Growing up in the 80's, we didn't have any type of bulk pick up service like that. We had to haul it off ourselves to the city landfill. Back then the landfill was open free of charge outside the city. It consisted of a very large pit where we could drive down the sloped edge and push all the junk out from the back of the pickup truck. I remember my dad and grandfather throwing everything we junked in the pit. I remember seeing car batteries, motor oils, old TV's, old tires, old refrigerators. old window air conditioners, and dead animals in the pit already. I remember seeing oxygen and acetylene bottles floating around in the black contaminated water that was in the deep part of the pit. The area today is an empty pasture with a few trees and bushes. I don't know if the city still owns that property. I have seen cattle on that property. Landfills have come a long way from the way it used to be.

My area has a bulk waste system. You contact sanitation for pickup on household items such as this. They send out a large truck with a crane arm attached. No one has to pick up anything physically, the crane gathers all the items and dumps it into the top of the truck. This way there is no injury to any of the employees. Seems to work great. Weekly, there is a truck for regular garbage pickup, one for recycling and one for green waste. The garbage cans have wheels to move them around and loops on them so the truck backs up and prongs come out to lift the cans (35, 45 or 65 gal sizes), dump it in the vehicle and return it to the ground, again to reduce injury to the workers. The workers then move the cans back to the side of the properties. Once a year, you can also go to the sanitation dept and dispose of items such as household chemicals, old paint, etc. They have people outside to meet you. You don't even need to get out of your car. Cars line up and workers come to our vehicles to remove the items.
