I was DJ in the 90s, Garbage was one of my favorites groups. 93-99 were great years of for the music. Grunge influenced a lot at the beggining but the sound began to change at the middle of 90s. Garbage, Republic, Elastica, Hooverphonic, Portishead, Massive Attack, Air, Mika, Duft Punk, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Blur, etc...

Maaan, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy....what u made me remember lol! Fire times back then for sure!
@antoninop.14117 күн бұрын
I remember that too. There was a really great window in the mid '90s that produced a lot of really eclectic sounds that came over the Alternative radio stations of that time. Alternative was really multiple genres then. All the bands you mentioned, and The Cranberries (for such a popular band then, I almost forgot them). Loved Massive Attack. Daft Punk has sure stood the test of time and bobbed to the surface again and again. I was a guy who was a metal head before that era and liked the prog metal that came out in the late '80s. I remembered kinda hating grunge for knocking Queensryche off the radio just when they reached their peak with The Empire album. Back to the mid '90s,..there were a lot of really good woman fronted groups in that timeframe ( i think most came out of the UK). But yeah, mid-late 1993 - 1996 was probably the best window in the '90s and it really kind of drowned out the grunge from the earliest period of the '90s (at least that was my impression and I was glad for it). I don't know when in the late '90s the quality started to decline, but I want to say '98ish or whenever Brittney Spears and the Spice Girls started getting radio airplay. You could tell the mass produced formulas were returning to hook pre-teens on mindless pop. I remember Shirley Manson saying at a concert that she wanted to dropkick Sporty? or Posh Spice. I'm actually surprised we had such a long run of good music and labels that allowed such diverse creative talent to rise to the top. Interesting times. The other thing I recall as I was reading a lot of business magazines at the time was that Clear Channel had bought up the majority of the Alternative radio format stations by sometime in 1996 and that's when I noticed the format of bands and styles getting airplay started to become more limited and one dimensional. By that time, all media outlets were getting snapped up and owned by I believe one of only three media conglomerates.

Well, the 90's were rife with sampling/reusing material from 1950 to 1989. So this was no exception. But the fact they made it sound different from the rest the song is what makes it good. If it would have been as heavy as the verses, it wouldn't have worked. Is not about it being a sample/copy, it's about how it's used.

the 90s were actually a pretty eclectic mix and I think Alternative summed it up as an umbrella term for the mix of genres you heard as a lot of it was just different. Pearl Jam and Nirvana were kinda the epitomes of grunge, and Soundgarden in some regards, but Garbage was never a grunge band or sound. I could never really put a label on their genre as they invented their own style and sound. That's what made them so great. Shirley and the band actually consciously chose to distinguish themselves from grunge with their sound. She didn't like grunge. For that matter, I never cared for the grunge bands of that era but by the mid '90s there were a lot of unique styles getting airplay on the Alternative format radio stations at the time. Even though Butch Vig, founding member, drummer and producer of Garbage, produced the definitive sound for some of the biggest grunge acts in the early '90s like Nirvana, he said they (Garbage) all wanted to do something unique and different and their influences came from all over. Grunge bands didn't utilize keyboards, synth, samples, and minimal tech really while Garbage utilized nearly every technology that was available at the time to create their sounds. And you tell a lot on Garbage 2.0. There's no other album that comes close to sounding like it.

I always wanted this album when it came out in 1998, I was in high school and never had enough money to buy it. I remember going every weekend to the music store just to see it and have it in my hands. I also remember that the CD was more expensive than the average albums at that time :/ so my best friend lent me the cd from time to time specially on weekends and I enjoyed playing it a lot for several months until I eventually stopped listening to it around 2000. My friend and I spent hours talking about their music and videos, Version 2.0 is definitely part of the music of my life. My friend is now far away living in Canada and I stayed in Mexico. I currently have the anniversary edition on CD and on Vinyl :) and I have been able to see them live a couple of times, so now I can die happily.

Garbage was one of the opening bands for the Alanis Morrisette concert I went to about a month ago. When they played this song I got SO hyped. Sounds just as great live.

Ah, but Garbage shouldn't be opening for anyone! Shirley has it head over heals over Alanis Morissette! She should be opening for Shirley!

Lyrics You can look but you can't touch I don't think I like you much Heaven knows what a girl can do Heaven knows what you've got to prove I think I'm paranoid and complicated I think I'm paranoid, manipulated Bend me break me Anyway you need me All I want is you Bend me break me Breaking down is easy All I want is you I fall down just to give you a thrill Prop me up with another pill If I should fail, if I should fold I nailed my faith to the sticking pole I think I'm paranoid, manipulated I think I'm paranoid, too complicated Bend me break me Anyway you need me All I want is you Bend me break me Breaking down is easy All I want is you I think I'm paranoid I think I'm paranoid Bend me break me Anyway you need me All I want is you Bend me break me Breaking down is easy All I want is you Steal me, deal me, anyway you heal me Maim me, tame me, you can never change me Love me, like me, come ahead and fight me Please me, tease me, go ahead and leave me Bend me break me Anyway you need me As long as I want you baby it's alright Bend me break me Anyway you need me As long as I want you baby it's alright

I love her look, that hair, that dress, those boots, matching undies, the choker, the way she dances, the intense movement editing, action, production value, amazing. Shirley in B&W visually stunning & I love her voice //

I like the song, lyrics and idea of bending and breaking to bring someone pleasure, love, passion, emotions, feelings, engagement, loving and liking someone, teasing someone, that high octane ping of someone you find super attractive, you like their look, their eyes, their voice, their style, their vibe, everything about them, even their imperfections making you giggle on the inside, real deep attraction that perpetuates the human civilization via reproduction //

I was 7 or 8 and my mum played this album on repeat during the late 1990's in her rundown 1994 Mercedes Benz saloon she got in the divorce settlement. All 5 kids stuffed inside a sweaty car on our way to school in London. It guzzled petrol and spurted water. It broke down multiple times. But this album kept us going.

Very true and the sound of the band is is for a 'PoP - song' definately on the more extreme hevier sounds... All the people wanted things, sayings and everything to be more true sdo there was this urgent need for bands like Garbage.

Got into this band when I was 8 years old playing this song on rock band lol. My mom was a fan in the 90s and played her CDs when I asked if she knew the group. As someone born in 2000 I miss that weird early part of my life where cds and vhs movies were the only option lol .
