The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra is a nickname given to artists who recorded together in the early 1970s. They were predominantly members of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their first album together was Blows Against the Empire, when they were known as Jefferson Starship. The name changed to Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra for the next album, David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name. During the sessions for Crosby's album at Wally Heider Studios, the musicians of each band were invited to the sessions and rehearsed hours of material, and everything was recorded. Material played during these recorded sessions in 1971 was used for Crosby's album (the "PERRO Chorus" is credited on the song, "What Are Their Names") and several other solo albums after Crosby's (see discography). The name Jefferson Starship was later used for Paul Kantner and Grace Slick's new band formed in 1974. Paul Kantner recorded a solo album in 1983 as a tribute to this time, Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra.

The beauty of this is that musicians in the 60's and 70's actually hung out together and jammed, which pushed them all in new directoins and created sounds that were decidedly different from what each band did on their own. Listening to Jerry Garcia stretch his playing to fit Crosby's freestyle method of writing and Crosby/Nash's unique vocal delivery is magical.

More in a Crosby 2-3 CD album. Incl a live Train robbery song. Sorry. Gentrified Homeless in miami. Lost 1000s of LPs, cds, cassettes. I was a live concert recorder for years. The Crosby concert i am pretty sure disappearef i d. Live in a club by FLL Beach. He was suffering. People really got into his acoustic set and David thought he was getting rejectsheded. Yet it was all great. Last tour in hallandale fl my own homelessness blues did not allow me out. Last chance. If I could only remember needs to be redone. At least 3 disc including outtakes like this one. A contemporary concert. 5.1 mix.... not treating this work with due respect explains man6 of our current terrible situation. Our humanity is diminished. Hare Krishna, jgl

For those of us who were at least 13 in 1963, to closely follow and appreciate Anglo American music from then through the 70's was richly rewarding. Jazz, folk, bluegrass and rock and roll progressed in amazing, unheard of directions. You had to be there.

I'm a full ten years behind that era, but some of us felt it enough so that it was easier to catch up to it in the late 70's. But you are right, there has never been a musical progression as distinct and meaningful as the generation that encompassed 1950-95

Thank you down into my soul. Yes this was my error now 73. But this speaks to me all the way across time. And yeah, that does sound like Jack Cassidy.

Wow, I love it. Fan of CSN & Y fan from '73, I was 22 at the time. There's a movie playing in my head as I hear this through my headphones starring a beautiful slim girl in a miniskirt. She's still my wife.

Finding this in my feed this morning made me happy. Thanks for sharing. Love it! The background conversation at Dope Wrap around 16:00 is a funny candid capture of these guys having a friendly argument about who is going to go get the “weed” and who’s driving there, underneath that piano riff is hilarious. If you pan to just the right channel you can hear it more clearly! The following instrumental jam session “Shuffle” is amazing 👍

I always liked Garcia's contributions. This has something of Cowboy Movie about it. Probably contemporary with that time. Subtle and with soul.
