Garda Motorcyclists Escort Paediatric Patient To Hospital

This video [credit Greg Lyons] is an excellent example of the sort of inter-service teamwork between emergency services organisations that happens daily.
An Irish Coast Guard helicopter transfers a paediatric patient to an awaiting National Ambulance Service emergency ambulance.
Before the ambulance is escorted through traffic by the Garda. Also involved were the Dublin Fire Brigade and Rescue 118
It took the convoy less than four minutes to travel from the junction of collins avenue and Swords Road to Temple Street Children's hospital during rush hour.
This is a journey that would ordinarily take seven times longer in rush hour traffic.

I hope all those drivers who pulled over, rather than feeling inconvenienced, realize they helped save the life of a child. We should always keep that possibility in mind when we see an escort like this and - move over! I used to live in Toronto Canada and I had a police scanner radio for a time. Toronto Police called these 'Emergency runs'. I don't know when and where they trained and practiced for them but the leap-frogging they do is such a skill and it's so impressive to see in action. These Garda cops are impressively smooth in their execution of it. The reason I mentioned the scanner is that on a run like this in Toronto, they would usually have patrol cars block off intersections even before the ambulance convoy got to the intersection and then clear after the convoy passed by. The police dispatchers who would coordinate all this behind the scenes were the invisible heroes of the effort.

And it takes a hell of a lot of practice to do this. We used to have a program on life on the road in the past, with multiple special episodes about the training officers that deal with this in The Netherlands, which showed how hard it is to get everyone's attention, get them to do what you want and how hard it is to keep your attention on the ambulance as well: in training they would usually stop the ambulance at some point to perform 'critical care'. The officers' job would be to spot this in time and hold position before returning to clearing a path for the ambulance. Normal officers in The Netherlands don't get this training though, only the Military Police and officers from the The Hague region.

Back in 1992 I was born 14 weeks premature suffered a brain hemorrhage at birth, if it wasn't for the police escort the ambulance and my parents received that day by Kent police. (Dad was in the middle of the escort following the ambo) I wouldn't be here today to write this comment.
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster Ай бұрын
While I didn't require an escort, I still owe my life to the emergency services 2 times. At 3 years old I suffered a kidney infection after a bladder infection crawled up to them, causing my body to slowly poison itself. After arriving at the hospital, some of the first checks they did gave a prediction of how close I had been to death: my mom having called 1-2 minutes later would've resulted in me dying while on the way to hospital. About a year later my body tried something similar and I had to be rushed to hospital again, this time at a much lower speed (30-40 km/h, something my mom to this day recalls as one of the weirdest experiences ever, given how slow it was going). The reason for this speed was that the ambulance crew managed to get a small tube not typically meant for supplying oxygen in between my seriously infected tonsils, to avoid having to perform a tracheoctomy (where they cut open your breathing tube below your vocal chords). This tube could easily slip out due to vibrations and shocks, so they decided to take things slow. Both of those experiences, even without me being aware of what was going on (though with the second one I was conscious, and the paramedic calmed me down by showing all the things in the ambulance to distract me from the fact I was having trouble breathing) are the reason I always get angry when I hear people lashing out or become aggressive against paramedics, police, and firefighters.

That was a rescue chopper not an air ambulance, the patient needed to have medical attention inside the road ambulance and as already pointed out that chopper is too big for a normal landing pad, such landings have been attempted before with these big choppers with lethal results to all onboard which is another reason they are not used for direct transport to hospitals.

Wow, that's some traffic clearing. It's obvious these guys train for this procedure. Three cops on motorcycles ahead. When they come to an intersection one of them stops to block cross traffic while the other two continue, then the one that stopped catches up and gets back in front. Rinse and repeat. Nice work, ladies and gentlemen.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Especially glad to see they give clear instructions that don't interfere with those just given by other officers, they don't swerve like idiots and especially don't slam on the bonnets of cars like I saw in a video from the French police doing this. I just hope that sometime they will experience this from within the back of the ambulance: the VTB-team (VerkeersTechnische Begeleiding, Technical Traffic Support) team from the The Hague police in The Netherlands, explicitly avoid having the motors keep playing catch up: the ride is stressful enough for the person in the back, having sirens and motorcycles zooming past every junction again and again adds a lot of extra stress to that experience. So they always make sure the motor-officer closest to the ambulance starts driving again as soon when they come within a short distance.

Like a hot knife through butter, there's motorcyclists and traffic police motorcyclists, they defy the laws of gravity, such a rare sight in the UK due to budget cuts ( f&_£ing Tories budget cuts) but when you see one even just casually gliding along you instinctively know your arse is being watched and if the 💩hits the fan it's highly unlikely you'll get away, in Lincolnshire and Humberside they had a unmarked Honda Blackbird.... with a superior machine and equally trained rider 99% of traffic offenders never got away as for the 1% a knock on your door and CCTV footage secured your conviction.

Three sets of amazingly professional driving here 1. The way the motorcyclists deploy to close junctions against side roads and leap frog around each other as the ambulance passed 2. Again the way the escort makes snap decisions about which side of the road to clear, closing the oncoming side of the road where possible 3. And the ambulance driver: the way they constantly makes space for the stationary motorcycle that's just been overtaken to come past. It's not often you see an abundance on blue lights giving way to overtaking traffic but here it's exactly the right thing to do I think these two services must practice this together in special training sessions as it all came together so neatly. Here's hoping the kid was saved

It's normal to move over to make room for emergency vehicles; But would you drive into an active bus lane? In the UK, councils will issue you with a £100 + penalty ticket. A very reasonable reason for making room, ie. 'due to emergency vehicles', will NOT void your penalty charge.

This is actually specifically allowed for in Irish law. Subsection B below applies in this case. Basically any driver is exempt from all road traffic laws, with the exception of dangerous driving and driving while intoxicated while under instruction of a garda. 87.- (1) Requirements under the Road Traffic Acts 1961 to 2010 relating to vehicles and requirements, restrictions and prohibitions relating to the driving and use of vehicles, other than those provided under sections 49, 50, 51A, 52 and 53 of the Principal Act, sections 12, 13 and 15 of the Act of 1994 and sections 4 , 5 , 12 and 14 of this Act, do not apply to- (a) the driving or use by a member of the Garda Síochána, an ambulance service or a fire brigade of a fire authority (within the meaning of the Fire Services Act 1981 ) of a vehicle in the performance of the duties of that member, or (b) a person driving or using a vehicle under the direction of a member of the Garda Síochána, where such use does not endanger the safety of road users.

Wow, the discipline of all the drivers moving out of the way so quick! Yesterday I watched a video with an ambulance escort in Paris and there the officers had a lot of work making all drivers move away! A lot of them simply closed the gap right after the first bike and so didn't allow the other officers and the ambulance to keep up the drive! In Ireland that is clearly different! Well done!

Absolutely wonderful! In the Netherlands, we have a system where one police motorbike is always in front of the ambulance, and the two others alternate from traffic crossing to crossing. This way, the ambulance only has to focus on the police escort in front of him. They are also warning the ambu for bumps in the roads and where he should take the left lane to go straight ahead. This seems a bit more relaxed for the ambu driver.
