Not only does this outdoor activity get the kids off the couch and away from the screen, but it also has benefits galore. "Nature activities benefit children in multiple ways: Nature walks and outdoor play encourage gross motor development and provide opportunities to develop strength and coordination," says Jennifer Schnakenberg, the education partnership coordinator at the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.
"Outdoor play also awakens the senses and gives children opportunities to integrate information from multiple senses and sources as they manipulate objects and explore their surroundings." These activities also often have health benefits such as a decreased risk for obesity and lower blood pressure, according to the National Environmental Education Foundation.
