One of my favorite sources for garden design inspiration comes from impressionist paintings. In this episode, I demonstrate my process from start to finish. The painting that I used as inspiration for this design is called 'Birch Mood' by Antonin Slavicek. This is an exercise primarily but hopefully, a site will present itself where this design can be implemented (and where many field adjustments will most likely be needed!) Thanks for watching!
Painting Project Plant List:

A Masterclass. Fascinating - I see it in my mind's eye! Thanks Erin (Impatient Gardener) for turning us on to Roy. There is an abstract painting in my house that I'm seeing a little differently as I then look out the window :). Inspiration is everywhere.

I sure would love to see this garden design implemented. I bet it would be absolutely beautiful. I’m certainly going to look for Cape Breeze now and the Terra Cotta Yarrow. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

When I started my back garden, it was blank canvas ( nothing but neglected dirt with weeds). I've taken it section at a time. I sit there and visualize the possibilities, using only things I have around the property for landscaping and adding plants, most of which were cuttings. I have very little funds to put in. A log pile became individual logs placed vertically into a "wall" to create a space. Then i sat and let my imagination lead me to the next areas. Its been a real joy. I have soooo much to learn, but there's nothing better than looking at what hard work and passion can create for the environment. The birds, lizards, bees, butterflies now come and I get the gift of watching them play in what I've created. I enjoy listening to you and you inspire me.

Interesting that you talk about the emotional aspect of the design and what you are trying to capture from the painting. I'm putting my opinion on it but I think its worth noting that the knowledge of the plants and what they will/can do gives a basis for expressing the feeling you are working towards. To me that is a very enjoyable aspect of garden design. Using plant knowledge to create a positive feeling (for myself, and others) when the planting is viewed later on. And oh, yeah. Field adjustments are where some of the fun comes in. When you can walk away thinking, 'that'll work!' (if the deer don't eat it!)

It is wonderful to watch this process of design, thanks for sharing! But isn't it quite short lived this planting design? Is it high or low the posterior maintenance?

I am assuming that this bed is in full sun, with little water needs, and not very fertile soil? What is the background of this bed? What do you see when viewing a garden with little elevation difference from the plants, from about 1 ft to 3 ft.? Thanks for continuing to share your naturalistic garden design thought processes. You are an inspiration to all of us who love to garden.

I can’t design a garden and will never be able to design a garden. I don’t have a blank slate, too many things that have to be worked around, buildings, black walnut trees previously planted hedges ect… and they cast shadows, in case of the black walnut trees I have to worry about their toxic nature. If I had a blank slate I MIGHT be able to design something but then you have to worry about the shadow cast again. Frustrating!! I really give people a lot of credit to be able to do something like that. Oh and I forgot plant compatibility, the soil they like and the zone their hardy too. Too much for this persons small brain 😵‍💫🌷💚🙃
