I use old bed sheets instead of frost cloths...I've learned they protect better. I raise my own annuals, both vegetables and flowers, and when I run out of space they all need to go on the patio for about 2 weeks for hardening off before planted out. I used to use frost cloths and would loose certain plants, some are more tender than others, but learned the old bed cloths gave best protection. I was "fooled" by the same Japanese grasses....removed them all, just too invasive.

You guys are so awesome to share your end of season experiences. When we first moved into our home (over 40 years ago), it was completely a shade garden as there were a multitude of trees. Unfortunately they were mostly ash and they were attacked by the ash boor. We had to have so many removed to protect our home. And of course the perennials that I planted were shade lovers. But the good part now is getting to enjoy sun loving varieties that I’ve always admired and wanted! Love your shows…

I am in a semi-rural area and always have lots of rabbits, even with a couple big dogs. They don’t do much damage in the summer but this past winter they damaged a tonne of established trees and shrubs by chewing off the bark. They would get up on the drifts of snow and chew several feet up on a tree trunk sometimes killing trees that were several years old. If they comfortable in your space it may be something to consider. I am in Manitoba so our winters are long and really cold, you may fair better where it’s warmer.

I am a novice gardener and I want to really fix my gardens and landscaping next spring. Watching you two has taught me a lot! The only thing I can think of to say is, live and learn for next spring/summer! I really love your yards and gardens! Thank you for sharing this video with us.❤

A fail is not a fail if you learn from it. At least that is what I keep telling myself. We have forty acres of almost all woods, three acres are open and one is sunny around our house. That being said, we have tons of deer and rabbits ( and possums, skunks, fox, coyotes, song birds, wild turkeys, …). Fishing line really does help with the deer. Make sure to have a strong line that won’t break easily when they come up against it. I make and use chicken wire “cylinders” around several of my plants every year to help with rabbits, and to help their structure from flopping, such as my baptisia. I have found that as I fed more bird seed to the wild birds, the rabbits enjoyed it more and more, and stopped eating my plants. And my husband puts corn out in the 2 acre field farther from our house, which keep the deer fat and happy away from our gardens. In fact, I’ve only seen one buck in the middle of yard this year, instead of fourteen at a time. Garlic powder is also awesome at keeping critters away from plants, when sprinkled on the soil, and reapplied after rain. I like to switch up between store bought critter guards and garlic, to keep them guessing. 😉Thank you for everything thing do and share with us!

My cousin planted her garden in late March. We live in GA. ZONE 8. WELL along comes a freeze for two nights. She lost everything. I kept telling her,wait till good Friday to plant. That's how our parents did it. Ga. has always had warm days even in February. Daffodils blooming before Valentines Day, camellias in full bloom. But they can take a bit of cold. Not tender young garden plants.

The challenge with rabbits is that they have the ability with their paws to stamp down stems from taller perennials - and even some leafier shrubs - and eat them to the ground. That means even shrubby native berry bushes and any shrubby willows. The key IMHO is to learn what they really like in your garden borders and focus your management strategies on those plants. For us, this is a surprising short list and nearly all native - and some, are only eaten when they first emerge…. BTW Consider using the larger sized black wire waste baskets as cloches from the Dollar Tree to stretch your plant budget….

Collect your hair clippings from your barbers and sprinkle around the plant you don’t want rabbits to eat. It helps!

I live in northwest Ohio and first time having a rabbit issue in my garden and have lived in same house 25 years, just a heavy rabbit population this year.

Bird feeders/bird seed attracted both rabbits and deer. We now have our entire yard fenced and have a small terrier dog. No more rabbits and he also helps keep the deer away. Highly recommend a small dog!

I was with you on this one eager beavers; I put annuals in the ground and was tearing up old blankets and running around in the dark covering them up. Thank heavens my planting area is small and I had no fatalities. In spring, it’s so hard to wait when you have perfect planting weather and are rearing to get the season started! Thanks for sharing the lessons learnt, you guys rock!

I had a real rabbit problem this year too. All the little bunnies were just trying a taste of everything. I keep my annuals in pots or they would be eaten. I have two dogs and that doesn't keep the rabbits out either. Bonny

Hi yal, I enjoy your videos and your beautiful garden. I have a tip for you and your viewers. To fill large pots use gallon or smaller water bottles (refilled with tap water with bottle cap back on). You still have the weight for no toppling over. I've done it for years. I did start with the styrofoam but its a mess. I Know my water bottle way works and even last through Ohio winters. We all can learn from each other. Thanks for sharing

Great information, I’ve been mulling over changes for next year, too, as I’m sure many gardeners do in this late summer season. Also, I’m thankful that your videos post at 5 AM as I’m an early bird, waiting for other favorites that post at 6 AM and 7 AM. Now waiting for daylight in northern Michigan so I can fertilize the lawn!

FYI: Regarding the disease/insect damage in the hydrangea hedge; when I cut into the stems of mine with weird leaf structure I found I had borers and needed to cut them back until the stem showed no damage.

I created a garden for my elderly parents-with ‘water wise plants’ designed for the lean soil conditions they had-then they added 4 inches of rich compost and watered it every day. Many plants didn’t make it. At my house we also got over-exuberant with mulch. Gasp! Lessons learned. Good job and thanks for sharing-so very relatable!

Yeah I bought all my annuals this year from a garden center in Ballston Spa (Brooks) had to bring them in. My basement greenhouse has to many tropical and citrus trees so no room. My rabbits loved my lilies. Sad their only poisons' to dogs and cats. We have chipmunks burry holes always near my plants all the time. I have to put plastic forks near my plants. Oh and we have two dogs and still have creatures all over (no we didnt get them for that reason).

What is that lovely grass behind you? I need more soft textures like that in my garden… This year was definitely crazy weather upstate. That warm spring turned into a very cool and long late spring. I know quite a few of my hydrangeas didn’t bloom because of that late freeze we had. Note to self- add more panicle types to combat that :)

You MUST grow CALIMA green beans! Jess (Roots & Refuge farm) recommended them last year & we'll never grow another variety! For decades (we're in our 80s & grow in 5b, elevated beds) we grew mainly Blue Lake but they have to be picked RELIGIOUSLY every 2 - 3 days. Calima grows 8" - 10" long pods & NEVER gets fat pods with big seeds inside. You simply MUSTv try this variety - tender, flavorful & very prolific, putting out pods for weeks.

Absolutely love the background to this video - your garden is looking so lush and established already. Just think what it will look like in 5 years!

I had the same problem with my hydrangeas this year (never had before). I think it’s best to prune and clean up around them this late fall instead of spring. Also I going to treat the soil with Bonide Sulfur Plant Fungicide and use as a spray in the spring. I hope this treatment works ! Please do a video on your fall clean up regimen. Thank you!

I'm sorry that the variegated sedge has soured our experience with sedge. There are ton of other sedge, clumping types, that are really great plants. I think you should try again, especially in your shader areas. They bring a really nice contrasting texture.

I am in 6a and we had the same problem with early warm spring. We lost all our apple tree buds so we have no apples or pears (18 trees) this year.

Enjoyed your video. We have battled with rabbits as well. 2 years running they have nested IN my garden. I do have some patches of clover which they seem to love and I have learned to put my beans in tall beds that that can't easily reach and/or fence them out.

I’ve lived in my home for five years and this is the worst year for deer. They have decimated many many of the my plants and have eaten a barberry! Last year -22 in Oct killed all of my shrubs. you have very beautiful gardens so so pretty. i can offer up my advice for those pesky rabbits. I am on a wooded lot so lots of areas for rabbits to hide. i use the wild strawberry plants thru out all my beds, and I have had very little issues with rabbits. I think they go to those instead of the flowers. and then once a year i will go thru to pull up alot of the vines as I weed. worth a try? Genie : )

Watch -this year you will have rabbits next year you will have owls or fox ,animals follow the food chain it’s one of the joys of gardening.The bugs do the same if you let your pests take care of themselves -granted you will have a lot of pest damage -you will have a rotation of good pests coming in to EAT

Thanks for sharing this, it makes me feel good that everyone has similar struggles. Plus, I am wondering if that Sedge grass you were talking about was a Karl Forrestor (or is it Foster?) OMG That grass! I had it and the first year it went from 0 to 60 in one season and the next it went to 120. I had to hatchet, pitchfork and torch it like you couldn't believe, to get it out! I was cursing Karl all Season. 😂😂

I had flea beetles in my garden early this year (I had never had them before) and had rabbits and deer eating my seedlings 🌱 on top of that! I ended up planting my garden 3 times before I put a netting around my plants unto they got substantial size. Along the way I tried a bunch of stuff that didn’t work like chili pepper and garlic powder and deer spray… definitely made some mistakes 😂

Great video!! I wouldn't call them fails I only call them learning experiences. My learning experience that I just took care of was more of a "duh" lol. I had a pinky winky standard planted in an island bed right across the pathway from a vanilla strawberry. It looked pretty walking the path but the standard disappeared looking at it from the street.
