I can remember doing a similar walk 20 years ago only vaguely with my parents. The Garden of the Gods National Natural Landmark leaves an impression though, and I wanted to return to share it with you. The striking colors of the red rocks makes the area stand out and the vertical fins rising several stories above the trail left me with a sense of awe at the natural beauty. THere were lots of people there this day but plenty of space on the trail. I didn't do the driving loop because the traffic was heavy but I thought the walk was fairly easy and much quicker than waiting for all the cars ahead to move. I can't wait to go back and take my kids.
I hope you enjoy these virtual walks and treadmill scenery videos. I really do mean it when I say how much I enjoy reading your comments so please feel free to leave one below. Also, remind me if I forget to follow through with one of the things I say I'm going to do in the walks. Thanks and keep on Steppin' -H

Garden of the Gods (Arapaho: Ho3o’uu Niitko’usi’i) is a public park located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971
The area now known as Garden of the Gods was first called Red Rock Corral by the Europeans. Then, in August 1859, two surveyors who helped to set up Colorado City explored the site. One of the surveyors, M. S. Beach, suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden". His companion, the young Rufus Cable, awestruck by the impressive rock formations, exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why, it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods."
The name "Garden of the Gods" was also later given to a section of the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, Calif., filled with large sandstone rock formations, because of the area's resemblance to Colorado's Garden of the Gods. The story goes that back in the early days of Hollywood, a movie producer seeking a rocky filming location made a comment to the effect of, "Who needs to go all the way to Colorado -- we have our own 'Garden of the Gods' here!" The Iverson family took the comment to heart and began calling their own collection of rock formations the "Garden of the Gods," and the name stuck. Today the main section of Chatsworth's Garden of the Gods has also been preserved as a park.
The Garden of the Gods' red rock formations were created during a geological upheaval along a natural fault line millions of years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric people visited Garden of the Gods about 1330 BC. At about 250 BC, Native American people camped in the park; they are believed to have been attracted to wildlife and plant life in the area and used overhangs created by the rocks for shelter. Many native peoples have reported a connection to Garden of the Gods, including Apache, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Lakota, Pawnee, Shoshone, and Ute people.
Multiple American Indian Nations traveled through Garden of the Gods. The Utes' oral traditions tell of their creation at the Garden of the Gods, and petroglyphs have been found in the park that are typical of early Utes. The Utes found red rocks to have a spiritual connection and camped near Manitou Springs and the creek near Rock Ledge Ranch bordering Garden of the Gods. The Old Ute Trail went past Garden of the Gods to Ute Pass and led later explorers through Manitou Springs.
In 1879 Charles Elliott Perkins, a friend of William Jackson Palmer, purchased 480 acres of land that included a portion of the present Garden of the Gods. Upon Perkins' death, his family gave the land to the City of Colorado Springs in 1909, with the provision that it would be a free public park. Palmer had owned the Rock Ledge Ranch and upon his death it was donated to the city.
In 1995 the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center was opened just outside the park

So excited to see you get to Garden of the Gods. I’ve not seen it in winter. When we went there, it was summer, and the hummingbirds were there. We were lucky enough to see several.

I had one hover over my left shoulder while I was seated. I could hear it’s wings beat loud as a drum. I tried to stay as still as a statue in hopes it would land on me. It must have hung there for almost a minute before it flitted away.

What breathtaking views! The red rocks are absolutely stunning, especially against the white of the snow. I can’t imagine how amazing it must look in person. (I could hear your stifled “Wows” 😄 and don’t blame you one bit.) I’ve always wanted to visit Colorado and this video is getting me itching to go all the more. I’m going to have to try make my way through the rest of your Colorado videos. Thanks for the beautiful tour. Hope your lungs didn’t suffer too much at that altitude.

Love your city walking tours. We are watching cities from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana as we are doing a road trip though that area this summer. I was wondering what kind of stabilizer you are using for your go pro?

Wonderful. You'll have a great time. I use a Scotty Makes micro pro 2 ( scottymakesstuff.com/products/micro-pro-2-4th-axis ). That's really just to help keep it level. The stabilization on the new gopros is amazing. -H

Hey Henry Do you have suggestions for places to go and things to do in Livingston for April? tks Jeff-always enjoy the V Ws
@CityWalks
@CityWalks 3 жыл бұрын
April is a tough month in the area. It's middle of mud season. You can drive the road over to Cooke City in the park or go fly fishing depending on the weather and river flows. The Hog Back is a good hike in April. I'm assuming you are interested in outdoor areas. You can also go down and soak in the hot springs in Chico or Yellowstone Hot Springs. Hope that helps. Check out YellowstoneTrips.com and Travelingmel.com for more info (my wife's blogs). -H
