I'm not bothered by spiders. Even Stormy, who is squeamish about some insects, is relaxed around spiders. But you should see her when a roach (common in the greenhouses) crawls on her. Charles

That is a rather large orb weaver, here where i live In the Pacific Northwest there are several common orb weaver species. They are introduced species and only appear in large numbers from early September to early December. They are definitely Araneus species and I suspect more than one species, A. diadematus is a likely culprit. most spiders I come across on a daily basis are introduced. All spiders i have confirmed native are somewhat uncommon or only found in large numbers in areas outside residential zones. My favorite native spiders I find are the large Phidippus Jumping spiders, the common species here I believe is P. Johnsoni.
@goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
I suspect spiders have taken advantage of humans to expand their ranges. We also have several species of jumping spiders, including one that hitchhiked here from Santa Fe, New Mexico when we moved our hatchery from there to here. Charles

The grasshoppers were bad up here in Dallas too. Those hungry little bugholes stripped several of my young apple saplings within a few hours. Fortunately my young trees and other garden plants are bouncing back. If you find the time I think it would be interesting to see a sample/review of the ripe fig(s) off your tree or trees. There are several fig collector channels on YT that may find interest on your specific lineage. Hopefully I am not your only subscribed fig-wannabe-nerd that is interested. Thank you!
@goliadfarms70292 жыл бұрын
It is certainly a good year for grasshoppers here. Our daughter-in-law (she and Carl live across the road) planted some cannas this spring. The grasshoppers appreciated the buffet. This fig (and its clones) bear a heavy crop during June and July then produce a few figs daily until winter. The original tree was planted in 1908 by my great-grandfather. It still grows in our yard. Right now, due to high temperatures, the figs that do ripen (and avoid being eaten by grasshoppers!) are small and dark brown. Next year I'll do a video of the trees and fruit. Charles

What a cool spider! It's great that you save critters often. I had a lab mix who lived sixteen years -- she ate grass every day of her life. It is a very natural behavior for doggies!

I think grass eating is very natural for dogs. Our dogs munch on dew covered grass every morning when we do our early morning checks. Charles

My dog is picky about what grass he'll eat, too! And he prefers the newest blades, not the old stuff. But then he also eats rabbit droppings, so I'm not so sure why he is picky on the grass!

We can't raise lemon grass where the dogs can reach it. They kill it by eating it down to the ground. One of their favorite grasses is Bromis, a winter annual here. Charles

Before we moved here, we had a greenhouse in Santa Fe, New Mexico and raised rainbowfishes. Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet and has cold winters. Heating during the winter was expensive, but Santa Fe also gets a lot of sunshine allowing a greenhouse to gain heat during the day. By the way, some aquaponics operations use compost to heat greenhouses as far north as New England. There was one project doing that to raise tilapia year round. Charles

Everyone always calls them wolf spiders, I'am tired of correcting them anymore. Yes, my German Shepherd Dog eats grass and usually vomits shortly thereafter. Speaking of names, the German Shepherd Dog is the only breed of dog that Dog is incorporated in the name of the breed. Sadly, I lost my Clarise aka Lassie to cardiac arrest from the anesthesia while undergoing surgery at the vets.
