Good gardening information is everywhere, but some good gardening advice might not be good for you. Every gardener's garden is unique. When a gardener says that there is one, best way of gardening, that information fails to account for differences. Learning how to garden is important, but learning why a method works may be more important. Gardener Scott discusses why good gardening info may not be good for you and why you need to learn more to benefit your own garden. (Video #119)
The channels mentioned in this video:
Alberta Urban Garden
UK Here We Grow
Self-Sufficient Me
#EverythingGardening #GardenerScott
You can help support the GardenerScott channel in three ways and it won’t cost you anything:
1.) Be part of the community by liking videos, subscribing, clicking the bell, commenting, and sharing.
2.) Watch the ads whenever you can. It just takes a few seconds and helps me a lot.
3.) If you use Amazon and want to buy anything at all, click through with this link: www.amazon.com/?tag=gardenersc...
It doesn’t cost you any extra, but it helps me pay for plants, gardening supplies, and all of the other costs associated with running a KZfaq channel.
Thank you for your support!

I view alot of youtube gardening channels but a few of my favorites are MIGardener, The Gardening Channel with James Prigioni, Gary Pilarchik The Rusted Garden, The Millenium Gardener, Roots and Refuge and of course yours. These are the ones that I am subscribed to because there is always something new to learn even if it doesn't directly apply to my gardening.

I have visited most of the sites you mentioned, but I learned a long time ago to be skeptical of any advice I receive from anyone. If I see something that kind of makes sense, I search out information to validate the advice. In doing this, I found an excellent site (GardenMyths.com) by Robert Pavlis - he's not on KZfaq. The other I like is Charles Dowding (on KZfaq) that has good advice and has run some field trials that challenge traditional beliefs.

@@priayief I agree it is wise to be skeptical on any advice and take it with a grain of salt. I always compare advice among other gardeners and do research to make up my own mind and then apply it to see if it works in my gardening circumstances.

This is one of the best garden videos I've seen in a while. Honestly, the idea that one expert doesn't have the answers to every issue could apply to most things we deal with in this modern world. And kudos to you, Scott. It is only be understanding our own limitations that we can overcome them. As a community (in this case, of gardening you-tubers), we can be more powerful than you can possibly imagine. Thanks.

Great video! This is so important. There is no one size fits all when it comes to gardening. Even within the same zone. I watch your content regularly and learn so much valuable information, but I'm in the foothills of the smoky mountains in zone 7. It's incredibly hot and humid here. Not to mention wet! We're in a temperate rainforest after all. My conditions are just about opposite of yours in most ways, but I still learn and apply your information when i can, or adjust it to my situation. Square foot gardening is very popular, but not a good idea here because the close quarters and hot humid air are a perfect recipe for fungus. I had to learn that the hard way, but that's the process. I've learned the value of clay and how to amend it. Clay is quite nutritious and isn't the villan it's been made to be. Just needs some love, but doesn't most backyard soil? I agree with you, Scott. Know your conditions and exercise discernment (which also comes with time...and failures). Always so very much to learn. Love your confident and humble attitude. Blessings.

I find the best way to get specific information on my garden is to stick with local experts. They know the soils, climate and pests of the region. For more broad knowledge I look for channels like yours. I also was taught from a very young age how to think vs what to think. This isn't taught like it used to be... Applying deductive reasoning, the scientific method and learning from my own mistakes and others mistakes is crucial to obtaining and retaining knowledge on the subject at hand. I find more often than not on KZfaq, videos of successful gardening and very few failures. It's the Facebook effect applied to KZfaq. You only get to see the good side. If we share our failures and wins at gardening we can all learn from the experiences. Sometimes people's ego can get in the way of great learning lessons.

Oh my lord. This was the best gardening video I've watched in the past year !!! I've been gardening forever, and I know what works well...FOR ME. Even after all these years, I'm still picking up a thing or two here and there and that's the reason I still watch new videos that come out. What I absolutely 100% of the time do, is take everything with a grain of salt. People who say "you absolutely MUST do this", and they're sitting in California (I'm in northern Canada (in the same city as Alberta Urban Garden is in fact) and I'm in zone 3, which every 10 years or so turns into zone 2 for a week or so. I do my own composting and EVERYTHING goes in my compost pile from 50 year old manure from beside my buddy's barn to apples from my neighbor's tree, to the leftover Christmas turkey. My compost pile just looks like pile of soil, and I grind and bury almost anything organic in it. A lot of it gets chopped up with my lawnmower before I throw it in there. I then grind (not top dress) that into my 2ft high raised beds on a fairly regular basis. Does ANYBODY think they'll get that recipe exactly the same ? Hell, I can't even get it exactly the same every time. Often, what works for you often won't work for me, and what works for me, often won't work for you.

I’ve watched all all the gardening channels that Linda listed and they all have useful information. As someone with a physics background, I always appreciate an instructor who emphasizes the “why” you should do something, especially in terms of the spectrum of personal (gardening) circumstances. Though I’ve just recently been watching gardener Scott videos, he’s my overall favorite now because of his scientific and common sense emphasis. Good luck to all you gardeners in 2023!

And you’ve nailed the reason why I followed you even though your garden was a giant bare patch of dirt when I started watching your videos. I’m so sick of needing to look at five or six or seven or eight sources just to try to glean why people are doing things and why they can’t agree with each other because so few gardeners explain why or how many “right ways” there are to solve garden problems. ;)

Well put G.S. Some garden advice is very area specific. I believe it’s really the responsibility of a new gardener to determine their own conditions; growing zone, soil type, weather patterns etc. From that point, try to find advice from gardeners who shares those same conditions. When a gardener has some experience under their belt, they can diversify their information sources. I like to watch, “Self Sufficient Me,” “Epic Gardening,” “California Garden TV/Next Level Gardening,” “No Dig Organic Gardening,” “Simplify Gardening,” “Gardener Scott.” Now only you G.S. share my zone. The rest are all much warmer climates But the valuable info I am able to gain from them is specific plant needs. It doesn’t matter where I grow a carrot. It still needs the same conditions. If a gardener in zone 9 has valuable info on how to best grow carrots or any other plant, I’m going to learn something. But I need to be wise enough to realize that my winters won’t sustain frost sensitive plants like Australia or California will.

You are so right. We need to figure out what is right for our area. I grew up gardening in Pennsylvania in a garden that my family had added organic matter to for years and years. You could put a seed in the ground and it would grow. It was so easy. When I tried to garden in other areas, it took me a long time figure out the secret. I think there are Universal truths to be found in square foot gardening, Back to Eden, and Ruth Stout methods. But adapting the methods for your location is imperative. I don't like telling people what to do so I pretty much show them what I'm doing and let them make up their mind what will work for them. PS...compost is a universal truth too!

Its all an experiment and learning curve for me. I look into books, watch videos and put it to practice. You are full of wisdom in your garden which i enjoy very much. Im very thankful for them. I do get some joy during my best growing times but it sure is hard work on my back. I don't have tractor bucket to help move my mulch. I did get a little lawnmower trailer to help me though. Wheelbarrow. I just do what im able to and learn as my gardening skills and garden grows. Thanks bunches for your help sir ❤ merry Christmas 🎄

Of course I watch your channel, but also The Rusted Garden, MIGardener, Self Sufficient me, Epic Gardening and Charles Dowding. This is so true! I've learned a lot of super ideas about gardening watching other channels as well. I really do like watching Charles Dowding explain his no dig concept. He also does a lot of demonstrating his planting procedures and videos of trial and err. Although I don't eat most of the things that he grows I'm going to give a few of the different veggies a try! Thanks again for another wonderful educational video.

Great video @Gardener Scott. I live in zone 9A in the central valley of California, but the zones are really just a general guideline. 30 miles east of me, same county, same growing zone, the weather is different. The west side of the valley is cooler as we get some of the effects of the marine layer which the east does not. One needs to work with what one is experiencing. I watch many channels to learn then experiment. I just starting out gardening as my job that I'm retiring from kept me traveling every week. The past few years everyone has seemed to have forgotten that the very essence of science is questioning, forming a hypothesis, then experimenting, then questioning some more.

I loved your intro. I had to laugh when you grabbed your head. I feel the same way. I've been watching gardening videos A LOT since August. Forgot half of what I've learned but with it all I have to take into consideration what I want to grow, what I am able to spend and what my physical limitations allow. I can apply some of the great advice on here but only in the context of what is feasible for my situation. I live in the middle of Indiana and there aren't any KZfaq gardeners from here that I have found but common sense helps me figure out what will and will not work for me. Great advice in this video. I enjoy your vlogs a lot. We may be in the same growing zone, I can't remember, but that doesn't mean we can have the same success but the advice you give can benefit me in many ways. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Bravo Gardener Scott! I enjoy your information very much! I will continue to pursue the mysteries and resolves of gardening at near 7000 feet in an arid region. Gardening goes along with experience, and if you don't do it and learn from it, your garden won't show it. I have made every mistake possible I think, but I am forging on to a renewed and better garden this year!

We watch about 6 gardening channels . Our top 3 are : Some guy going by : Garden Scott . The Crazy Jersey Kid : James Pergoni ( not spelled right ) . The crazy Texan Mexican ; Grow your Greens ... ( channel has long name ) ... We pay attention to a lot of the aspects you refer to about gardeners saying to just do it one way .... And the problem as to why we disconnect from them isn't really that alone , but more so because they disconnect from their audience because their heads swell up like a puffer fish sticking their needles of poisonous information out causing sabotage ... We like some of the others you mentioned and even follow them as well but they don't reach into our top focuses .. Mainly because they fall short on technical details that we do enjoy .... James Pergoni is good , but he did just release one we're having a lot of trouble agreeing on based on some false technical details he gave out , but its a first .... So we'll hang on for a bit .... What really sets aside each from the other for us is much to do with their arrogance ... We use to follow a few of the Back To Eden gardeners , however , they all seemed excessive , arrogant & almost demanding . when we started looking at the over all cost , well , wow , that's a pinch in any budget . it would just be a fun project to do just one bail but those gardeners are doing entire plots & that totaled up a lot of cash ... A lot .... Its like they secretly had hay to sell and was using the back to Eden garden method videos as a way to promote hay interests .... We look for a few key points that decide for us as to whom we enjoy learning from . Technical views is most certainly a top key interest for us & while you may not go over all points , you seem to at least always reference for the viewer to look into said subject and that's important to both novice & experienced . that's why ur our number one .. The crazy Texan , he does a storm of technical points but he goes into deep detail and sometimes runs his videos to around an hour mark but he does farm visits , business visits .... Usually have to take breaks to finish his videos but they hit all aspects of topic and that's very important for success . James Pergoni , he's exciting and informative ... Quick vids .... Hits most all aspects of topic ..... The big shots on the left in the big dome scenerion , we've found that in a lot of cases those gardeners don't really want the little guy to be successful & in most cases they just go around key points to innocently cause failure as its their business and they have the mentality of its their money maker & they just want the views & clicks for more money .... We understand all of that but don't find it beneficial and can spot it pretty quickly ... And is why we truly enjoy that Gardener Scott guy ! He's that guy that you watch and you hang on the edge and talk to the screen .... ::: but what about :::: & its as though he can hear the question and mysteriously seems to answer .... We enjoy the fact that he shares so much of a wealth of information and so far really seems to hit all the aspects we find very important when it comes to being successful ... Tell Scott we said Thank You !

Thanks so much. A big reason I really started focusing on making videos is because of the points you highlighted. So few of the video creators seemed to care about the common gardener. Along with a amount of weak and false information being presented, I felt a different, positive perspective needed to be presented. Thanks for your support.

One Yard Revolution is my longtime favorite. Patrick has gotten busy with musical projects so his gardening videos are more sporadic, but I still refer to his earlier ones often, as they're very science-based and he explains everything so clearly, including the "why." He also gives great information on what you can grow in spots that don't get ideal sunlight. You, Scott, are next on my shortlist. Of the gardening channels I've seen, your conditions are probably most similar to mine in Northwest Montana, and I like the way you explain things too. I also watch MIgardener, Maritime Gardening, and No-Till Growers for ideas on gardening with less or no tilling.
